It's hard to explain to anyone who wasn't around at the time of the Dreamcast launch just how amazing it was to see this game running on a home console!! In all honesty, for me, it was last time a new video game system truly felt major jump in graphics from the last generation.

Essentially as close as normal consumers had come at the time to arcade perfection. Yes. There was Neo Geo. But most couldn't afford it. And it specialised in 2D games. Dreamcast offered arcade perfect 2D and 3D ( Soul Caliber, Daytona, Powerstone ). As close as possible to arcade perfection anyway. Just like Neo Geo. No one had done that with 2D and 3D games before

SC truly was head and shoulders above everything else out at the time. Games on the Dreamcast were beautiful to look at, but SC even made them look ugly in comparison. But visuals aside, even the rest of the game had a level of polish that was unheard of. The controls, balance, and the amount of modes was the gift that just kept on giving. The term "must have" still does not do it justice. It should be "mandatory" would be more appropriate.

As a massive Street Fighter fan, Soul Calibur even won me over. It was a masterpiece during a time when home conversions of arcade titles often had varying results. Soul Calibur went above and beyond just a bare bone conversion by going the extra mile in every area. The gameplay was easy enough for novices to get into but with enough depth to keep fighting game fanatics busy. I love the SF3 series and will always be grateful that Capcom chose to keep it the graphics 2D sprites. Not only was the gameplay solid, we got to witness perhaps the most beautifully animated 2D sprites ever seen. On a side note, it wasn't just the 3D Soul Calibur that outshined SF3, X-Men vs Street Fighter hit the arcades the same year as SF3 and was considerably more popular despite running on SF3's arcade hardware predecessor the Capcom Play System 2(CPS2)

I remember awhile back Soul Calibur was difficult to find. It sold out so fast, you had to wait to find a copy. SF3 Double Impact however I was able to find a bit easier. Later, Third Strike as well. But not at Electronics Boutique, I had to go elsewhere to find SF3. I did rent Soul Calibur, and later borrowed a friends copy. Loved the campaign, unlockables, and roster. Visuals, soundtrack, and clashes were fantastic. Plus the extra story mode, aside from Arcade, going around the world, good vs evil, plus connecting with other characters, and obtaining various weaponry for everyone. I can understand the challenge of 2d vs 3d. It has been a battle as old as time. Honestly I love both. I never connected with those reviews being naysayers, love what you love. If a game captures your heart, and you enjoy it, that is all that matters. Soul Calibur definitely paved the way for arcade fighters to evolve. Even now In the words of Nightmare "Need more souls!!!"

While it might have destroyed SF3 at the time, the Street Fighter franchise was at a crossroads. They couldn't release a 3D game that compared to Tekken or Soul Calibur. They showed they could do it with Rival Schools and Plasma Sword, which I enjoyed more than Soul Calibur. They also introduced all new characters, which fans were resistant to at the time. That said, SF3 has aged better than Soul Calibur, for me, and it boils down to the graphics and mechanics. SF3 was ahead of its time.

To be fair, I think Street Fighter 3 destroyed itself. Full of brand new characters after the success of Street Fighter 2 and Alpha, fans weren't as interested in a fresh cast. It lacked the history/familiarity of older games and flopped as a result; even some of the mechanical differences (parrying, selectable supers, ex moves) added to the different feel and a lot of older players just didn't give the game a chance.
@supergremlintripleseven67902 жыл бұрын
At the time that was true. imo calling it Street Fighter 3 yet having only Ryu and Ken returning (with Akuma returning in 2nd Impact and Chun Li in 3rd Strike) was part of what turned off many players. Don't get me wrong, it was the origin of some of who are now iconic Street Fighter characters (Ibuki, Yun and Yang, Dudley and Urien for example) but for those there were the "freaks" (Necro, Q', Remy are examples). Ironically 3rd Strike, heavily criticized as being "more of the same" would later live on and become revered as one of the finest 2D fighters to have ever been, mostly thanks in part to Evo 37.

Soul Calibur was the reason I bought a Dreamcast! I wasn't totally sold on the Dreamcast yet, but walked past someone playing SoulCalibur at a store. Seeing it in motion convinced me right then and there I was getting one. Didn't get it on launch day, but within a month of release! SoulCalibur was such an awesome game! Played between friends quite a bit when it came out! I didn't play another one until SC4, and enjoyed it a decent amount. I played a lot of SC6 though! Not sure what it was, but that SC6 totally clicked for me, and I personally thought it was a ton of fun! I got pretty good at it with 3 characters! But bad matchmaking and glitches being introduced here and there with a new patch didn't help it survive... And there was the Paper/Rock/Scissor mechanic that people didn't like.... I was good enough to be able to avoid it most times, but people hated it. I really hope they release a SC7 that has great matchmaking and mechanics so the playerbase stays alive! In the right hands, im sure it would succeed like T7 did! Release a SC7 that everyone likes and I will be incredibly happy!

For context-The gulf in quality between Soul Calibur and every other 3D game was ridiculous. Also the music was equally impressive. I was obsessed with this game for years. As for Street Fighter 3 series- unfortunately most of the game media hated 2D games and critically snubbed the series (with the exception of Ganefan). Most fighting game "fans" only jumped on the Street Fighter 3 bandwagon years later when it got packaged with a Street Fighter II collection. By then it was too little too late as Capcom had long since abandoned 2D and the original SNK was long dead.

I didn't like street fighter or mortal kombat at all or any fighters from that genre. Soul Calibur, otoh, was one of my favorite games of all time. It got everything so right on the DC. To me, Soul Edge & then Soul Calibur were basically just improved versions of Samurai Shodown (which came out beforehand). It gave each character his/her own unique weapon, which was completely different from the "unarmed" combat of Street Fighter (which took a deep dive w/ it's "3rd" installment). Soulcalibur defined the Dreamcast more than Sonic. Even people who didn't care about fighting games got Soulcalibur. It expanded the genre by making its own genre. I think a lot of people forget that another huge strike against SF3 was it essentially trashing most of the classic roster with characters that had relatively meh or poor designs. They didn’t even have Chin-Li in the game until 3rd Strike. Characters like Remy, Twelve, Sean, Necro, Hugo, Makoto, and Oro (along with meh designs for Ibuki, Yun, and Yang) didn’t help, and weren’t welcomed with open arms. They were rightfully criticized. Also, it was rather odd to see the main protagonist be Alex and not Ryu. Capcom got SF3 all wrong in most marketable ways. Also lest we not forget Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha and EX2 Plus in the PS1. Arika’s vision for the series was definitely NOT what SF fans wanted and it too got meddled with bad visuals and a wildly different gameplay experience to the sequel having bad character designs (V. Rosso, Sharon, and Area) and writing/lore that was questionable like Kairi killing Akuma, Hayate’s entire purpose, the rather meaningless rivalry of Skullomania with Shadow Geist and Sharon being Blair’s sister to just get retconned. Speaking of Blair, her and Allen were moved to Fighting Layer (you should play it BTW) as they were Arika properties and their omission felt odd as Fighting Layer never left Japan and never got a home console port; reason being the bizarre way things internally were calculated as the game ran (time, unlock methods for secret battles, and unlocking new characters were done under evaluation from the game reading the time and conditions through real time. Also, the game has a program to name your finishing arts, so that had to be processed in real time too: a strenuous task to ask of a PS1 or parliamentary Dreamcast game.)Also, there were rumors of issues with PETA and the one round match prevented it from leaving its arcade home. The tag feature of EX3 was not done correctly and rather easy to punish. Also, even as an early PS2 title (blue disc) the graphics looked blocky and bad. It always amazes me SF came back after essentially missing the biggest console ever (PS2).

I don't know why I didn't get a Dreamcast. Despite not owning one, SoulCaliber was still one of the most important games I experienced. and SoulCaliber 2 was the most awaited game back then ( I only partly waited because I Imported the JP version before the US release for Gamecube)

I was number 2 in Scotland at soul Calibur. I did beat the winner of the whole of uk in a friendly, so technically I was the best in Britain 😂

Before the PS2. If you had a chance to transition 1st to DC 1st. SC was the moment I knew arcades were in trouble cause the fighter’s finally reached arcade perfect status ports with this.

Namco was truly the king of 3D fighters during this era. Tekken 3 was peak PSOne, Soul Calibur was the game worth getting a Dreamcast for (I only got to finally buy the X-Box live arcade version which was okay but really should have had the HD treatment that SCII got). Tekken Tag also made the PS2 worth getting because that too surpassed tge arcade version. I remember several years ago that Soul Calibur had an android port which is no longer listed for sale. Did anybody buy that and how good/bad of a port was it?

The DC was the first time we got as good or better than arcade games when they got home. Underrated system

Soul Caliber is one of my favorite fanciness, Soul Caliber on SEGA Dreamcast is better than the arcade version, Soul Caliber 2 on PS2, OG Xbox, was a upgrade and exclusive caricature for each installment, I learned every caricatures moves from a pro player and I got good 👍. Then Soul Caliber 3 on PS3, Soul caliber 6 on PS4
