Some clarity about time ending on the spinning D of The End, it was an archaic leftover from how Japanese speedrunning was back then. Whereas SDA and its mostly English speaking community timed up to things like last hit on the final boss or last input or in game time regardless and didn't consider the credits as part of the run, Japanese communities usually included credits in their speedrun times as well. By the time us Americans got interested in single segment runs of SPM, the Japanese community had established the D as a consistent end point for runs, and we went along with it mostly due to the mass of text after the final boss needed to be mashed through throwing ambiguity on the American systems of last hit or last input, and it was just easier to follow what methods the current fastest times were doing. I'm pretty sure it made sense back then since the in game time of a completed save file included credits anyway, which hit all birds with one stone for that era of timing.

I don't remember who decided on the timer stop timing in Japan, but at the time, the timer stop timing for other Mario RPG series RTA was the end of the ending, so I think they decided to make it the same as that. In those days, the person who ran first set the timer start timing and stop timing, and everyone followed it unless there was a serious inconvenience. Maybe it was me.🥴

Agreed. Though, even if Super Paper Mario failed to be a good Paper Mario game (at the time at least lol) it was one of the best *Super Mario* games thanks to the sheer creativity that you simply don't get in the Mushroom Kingdom + being a Platformer RPG. That combination of genres is seriously cool to me and I feel is a very untapped genre that failed to catch on. Might be because I'm stupid but I haven't seen anything like Super Paper Mario ever before or ever since. Or maybe because "Platformer with stats" leans itself better towards the Metroidvania or sidescroller action RPG (where you go whacking things around) rather than stomping on the head of your enemies

I consider Super "That weird, but decent spin off" to the two Paper Mario games.
@WackoMcGoose
@WackoMcGoose 2 жыл бұрын
@@nicocchi You know, that's honestly the best way to put it. 64 and TTYD are "Super Mario RPG, but with a paper theme". Super is literally "Super Mario the platformer, but with a paper theme and some rpg bits". Sticker is when Nintendo decided to double, triple, and quadruple down on the word "Paper", with "Mario" as an afterthought. Color was a little better, but not much. And Origami, is when they remembered that MEMORABLE CHARACTERS AND GOOD WRITING is what makes an RPG, and if they're determined to have LOL PAPER™ be the direction of the series, it's the closest we're ever gonna get to the OG trilogy's story quality. Plus, the "everything is paper" is actually what _drives the plot_ of Origami, rather than being ZOMG WACKY SILLINESS like Sticker/Color. Or, to put it another way, the plot summaries of all six games (Paper Jam is a M&L game, not a PM game)... 64: "Bowser wants to use the power of wishing stars to rule the world" TTYD: "An entirely new faction of baddies wants to rule the world with the power of a thousand-year-old demon, and Bowser has his own agenda running alongside" Super: "Romeo and Juliet, except Romeo decides he's gonna destroy the multiverse when he thinks Juliet is gone forever" Sticker: "ZOMG BOWSER TOUCHED A MACGUFFIN AND MADE EVERYTHING BAD" Color: "ZOMG BOWSER DID AN OOPSIE WITH PAINT MIXING AND MADE EVERYTHING BAD" Origami: "An origami creation brought to life misunderstands his creator's gesture and decides he's going to origamize the world, while his sister, one of his own creations, teams up with Mario and friends to stop him"

I am not a speed runner. I do not watch speed runs, I do not intend on watching speed runs. I don't even watch SGDQ. But I watch speed running history videos all the time, because I honestly do not believe there is any other trend, more beautiful on KZbin than this. A person, or group of people who get together to make a video chronicling their own history and presenting it to the world. Think about it, how often do you get documentaries predominantly made by the people who are doing the thing they are talking about? They know no one else will talk about it, gaming blogs or news etc. So they do it themselves. And everytime a video does well, I feel warm inside. And I can only hope the effort you put into this video is also rewarded. Thank you.

I know that it probably would've happened regardless, but the events described at 1:39:49 and onwards feel like an Heisenberg Principle of speedrunning documentaries. Flash announced that he was gonna make this video, and everyone jumped into VC to discuss that. Which meant that when Igrmi posted his find, you were all primed and ready to act. The mere fact that this video was in production affected how quickly the true potential of Gold Bar Clipping was found. The documentary affected the documented.

I've never watched an SPM run in my life - i barely know anything about the main game itself - bur I love a good WR story, and Castle's at the end, while unconventional, is outstanding. I can uncderstand the thought process - Castle had already resolved to break the 4 hour barrier before any new discoveries, and come hell or high water that was gonna happen. No "easy way", not for all the gold medals in the world - proving the mastery of the most terrifying SPM route ever known, that was the point. And by god, Castle did it.

Yep! Actually all I did for the storybook intro was nuke the entire fontset in the game so it had no text, then just added in the text and noise in a video editor. The chapter cards I honestly got lucky with, multiple project files and somehow a simple removal of the black background color made the effect you saw in the video. Figured it was gonna be more work but nah. Lucky moments in editing. 😅 Glad you enjoyed it!

These speedrun documentaries always feel like I'm watching some kind of recap episode of an anime or serialized cartoon or something. And there's all these "characters" and "plot twists" I get so attached by the time it's all over. I had a lot of fun recognizing the different tricks and moments during the credits. Man, knowing how crazy these kind of videos often get, I was expecting the Peach intermission sequence break mentioned at 22:53 to be revealed to be real by the end of it. I'll be looking forward to one of the biggest games of my childhood to be broken more and more as time goes by.

I'm only half way through and I have to say this is probably one of *the best* speed doc videos I've ever seen. It's clean, smooth and well put together. I just felt like I watched an entire movie! What a journey that was happening in the background of my life! I will always love this game because it was the first Paper Mario game that I played and the only one I liked and the only one where I beat the main story. To many gamers and other KZbinrs, the general consensus is that this game, like most of my favorite Nintendo games and other Wii/Wii U games, have been called "the black sheep," "mediocre," "bad," "terrible," "average," or just "okay." After watching this video, I am glad that I found others who think the same and have a passion for this old game, and to those gamers and KZbinrs who claimed Super Paper Mario to be just an average or an okay game at best, I hope this video finds them. Fantastic job and I have just subscribed and looking forward to new content!

It's amazing to see a game that meant so much to me as a child and kickstarted my love for the platforming genre be resident to what's such an amazing dedicated community. Speedrun WR history videos are starting to become a larger trend and I hope this brings more runners to the game in the hopes of pushing the game yet further in the months and years to come. The whole piece was excellent informative and fascinating and although I may never decide to run the game as speedrunning has never been one of my major active interests I wish you all the best.

I'm not much of a speedrunner myself (I've dabbled with DKC2, and tried a few different glitches in games for fun), but I love watching these long videos that break down a game's speedrunning history. I just wanted to tell you that your section about Gold Bar Clipping is one of the hypest "check out this trick" segments I've seen in ANY speedrun-history-related video. I'm not even in the SPM community and yet you did SUCH a phenomenal job of conveying how excited everyone must've been in seeing how this one new discovery broke the game. Definitely a favorite speedrun video of mine for sure thanks to that segment. :D

This is easily the best speed doc I've ever seen. It must have been so amazing to watch it grow from it's humble beginnings to the insanity it is now! I find it especially funny how the key to most essential skip to achieve sub 4 was hiding in plain sight, and how someone so new to the community was able to have such an important impact on the game. Stories and documentaries like this are why I will always love speedrunning.
