22:16 - Hands Free Holding
25:00 - TTC and Sliding speed
29:58 - Bowser in the Sky again
36:05 - Conclusion
Note 1: His first comment was in September 2013 and his first message to Pannenkoek was in January 2014, but his first proper contribution was only fully realized in April.
Note 2: Pannenkoek favoured convenience over optimizing for time. He raised the water so he could copy paste inputs, but he demonstrated in a later video that lowering the water instead is about 9 hours faster: • WDW Optimized Overflow...
Note 3: This isn't always strictly true while sliding because sliding speed is a vector calculated differently from normal speed, but it is true for the most part. More on that later.
Note 4: Because he's sliding, he has to make sure to hold the control stick back out to the left or forward. Keeping it to the right would make Mario turn into the platform and prevent him from falling off. This is why, while grinding itself is easy to achieve in real time, dive grinding is TAS only because the stick needs to be in different positions on every frame.
Note 5: Technically, the TTM secret slide and the SSL pyramid also have loading zones, but they have no grabbable objects nor interesting objects to clone.
Note 6: Blue Coin Clones • SM64 - Blue Coin Clones
Although the PU glitch was not yet understood at the time, this is nowhere near the first observation of it either. It dates back to 2005 or earlier.
Note 7: Specifically, walls are checked once every frame, but not every quarterstep. More on quartersteps in Part 4.
Note 8: There is an additional speed type used when flying or swimming that is a 3D vector.
Note 9: There are only two goombas in this trio because the third one is the Mystery Goomba: • SM64 - The Mystery Goomba
• SM64 - The Mystery Goo...
Note 10: The object slots shown here are a major simplification. In reality, these slots are shuffled almost every frame.
Note 11: This has since been found not to be true: edge grinding while holding an object can load up to 15 dust particles at once if done right. This is based off the information known at the time.

Camera work and editing in this video is next level. Love revisiting all the creativity from pannen & co. during this era! One thing I want to point out is, some stuff might look simple with the benefit of hindsight, but none of this is supposed to be possible. Each of the innovations pannen made required him to sink a large amount of time into a problem that was supposed to be unsolvable, with limited tools and a small chance of success. He could have given up at any time but he kept pushing forward and getting results. Also he didn't have the benefit of the vibrant TASing community we have now because it went mostly dormant after the 2012 120 stars TAS. In my opinion pannen kept it alive with his creativity and innovation. Props to Plush and Gaehne D too making clever cameos now and then.

If you were as popular as summoningsalt I wouldn’t be surprised if all of KZbin got together to watch the premiere of the rolling rocks part. That being said, I think people are missing the point of the CURRENT part lol… The transport cloning and bowser in the sky explanations absolutely blew my mind here and I can’t understate my excitement for not just the soon to come parts but the parts near the end since those the parts in the server I’ve been able to be a part of seeing live!!

It's worth noting that when Pannen was doing the massive Goomba cloning for the A press saves in BitS, while he was able to avoid the crashes on emulator, those TASes would've crashed on console due to how the N64's Reality Co-Processor handles graphics. I'm not talented enough to explain this properly, so I'll pull it from Ukikipedia: "The main display list buffer has two sides, the left side holds F3D commands the game runs, and the right side holds allocated buffers for matrices. When an object's graphics are drawn, 16 bytes are used from the left side and 64 from the right side for each separate 3D model from the object. These two sides overlap when there are too many of these models on screen, leading to both sides being overwritten with garbage data and invalid F3D commands." So, when you see stuff like the random flashing colors or shadows turning into boxes like at 8:47 and 32:10, those are moments where the game would've crashed on N64. Though, in the case of the first example, the game would've crashed way, WAY before then since the star count in the HUD has already disappeared (which is another emulator quirk that isn't properly reflected on console). This wasn't properly understood at the time, and was only later understood when Pannen looked into it after discovering an emulator exclusive state he referred to as "Game Corruption", which he has a couple of videos of on his alternate channel.
