How are the odds of all of these things so astronomical?? Top o' the Town platform was 1 unit to small and the star was 1 unit too high?? How does it line up that way rofl SM64 ABC has to be the most incredible thing in video games
@Ultimaximus
@Ultimaximus 2 жыл бұрын
Just as some things are just barely barely out of reach, other things are barely *in* reach, like the Chuckya drop technique. If Mario's interaction heights were actually lower or slightly higher, then there would be an entirely separate list of things that would then become barely in reach and barely out of reach.
@Bismuth9
@Bismuth9 2 жыл бұрын
Well the top o the town platform being 1.012 unit too small was more so for VSC which at the time was just barely off from working (until Pannen found some optimizations for it). It could have been other sizes but with the way he was trying it, 1.012 unit larger would have done it, but some size smaller would have worked too.

What astonishes me about this particular series more than anything is that even despite having pretty much as much time as you could ever need to explain every star and every discovered trick, some things are STILL simplified to "Pannen Magic". This could be a 12+ hour documentary series if every single strategy for every single star was given a full explanation. Utterly unbelievable.

Really subtle detail I appreciate. In the Chuckya diagrams (like at 8:23), when Chuckya grabs Mario, the position of Mario stays where he was grabbed until thrown. Because of the fact that Chuckya's use a HOLP grabbing system too. I know that probably came "free" from the values you got from Stroop or emulator memory watches, but thanks for including it. Shows your dedication to accuracy and detail gathering.

I love how you do all your own piano music, and that the renditions are so faithful! Question, do you record them in one take, or are the parts cut together?
@Bismuth9
@Bismuth9 2 жыл бұрын
It largely depends. The file select, SMB1 theme and Mario Medley were one-take recordings, but some of the more complex stuff like Bob-omb Battlefield, the SMRPG music, or Yoshi Valley in MK64, are layered recordings, i.e. I record the bassline/accompaniment first, then I play that back and record the melody on top of it. But it's always one take in the sense that I always record a part of it in one go, I don't cut it in multiple segments.

@@ruben._._34577 I think a lot of people get this wrong if I remember what he wrote correctly. It was that he was going through a really rough period in his life and used creating the video as an escape and working himself to the point where he made himself even more miserable, enough to affect his health and relationships. He was more worried that he could never live up again to that quality of video, would be dissatisfied with anything that wasn’t as good in his eyes, and didn’t want to torment himself again to create another commented video like that that was good enough for him. I’m sure releasing what he believes to be his magnum opus and it getting memed right after going through that didn’t help at the time, and if I could find what he wrote I’d love to quote him instead of trying to remember, but I’m pretty sure he eventually realized the memes weren’t mean spirited and isn’t the reason he no longer creates commented videos.

Ironically I feel that same way about a glitch I found in Origami King. Fishing storage, while wonderfully broken and allowing for interactions and tricks that shouldn’t be remotely possible, is so absurd that it tends to detract attention from all the other cool glitches that are being found in the game. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an awesome glitch, but I do think some people in the discord forget the other cool things we can do. Pretty similar to PUs in relation to the ABC wouldn’t you say? In fact I’d say that’s leads to something that I really admire about Pannenkoek, his ingenuity with so many tools and ideas, while not getting tunnel visioned by certain strats and instead considering most ideas collectively, is very admirable.

This was another flawless video … raising the “bismuth standard” bar even higher … I was actually sad when the video ended … not just because the piano rendition of the sm64 credits theme hits the nostalgia just right 😌 … but because “no mo video 🥺” … but I gotta remind myself … “no mo FOR NOW” 🤩

obviously all the stuff in this part was way more epic in reality than it is presented in this extremely condensed documentary show, but it was still very touching to get reminded of that timespan of history again. at some point i honestly shed some tears during the video as it let me live through this crucial episode in my life again in which the unmatched creativity, effort and unity of the ABC family was the only shining beacon in my crumbling dark world of hopelessness and realizing the wonder of existing just in the perfect time and space to be somewhat part of this monument of gaming history did literally save my life back then... i had actually nothing else to grab onto, but thanks to those people that i didn't even really know, i was able to hang on and regain some hope again. thank you all SM64 and ABC crew, your work was way more significant than this video made it look like! (and sorry for the long text, i just got a bit emotional from watching this great video)

The in-game camera shots to show off subtle things, like the distance between two elements that you need to work together to save an A press, or zooming in to show a teeny little slope that makes a certain trick possible, is very much appreciated. It gives a satisfying, almost cinematic flair to what's being said while intuitively communicating what's going on with something more than a PowerPoint presentation. Kudos for that!

I'll say again, this to me explains the tropes and weirdness surrounding the word "magic." People in the distant past found ways to break reality in exactly the same way these players are breaking the game. What looks absurd delusional and nonsensical only stops looking like that when you understand the hidden mechanism of operation or you're simply perfectly copying the process. If you're off by one pixel, one gesture, one letter, disaster or fizzle. All this sounds incredibly familiar to me in a mythological and game hacking context.

This is a fantastic overview, thank you :) I've followed the progress of the ABC since a long time, but I've only ever seen glimpses and completed/theory videos of it, often not entirely understanding what was going on. This is really fascinating - both a trip down memory lane, as well as an explanation of the finer details I didn't realize

12:16 I could just imagine the X-files theme going off. 45:50 _...Or is it?_ [cue Vsauce music] 46:21 And from the first frame, you know exactly what comes next. God, everything about these later A-presses getting saved is like something out of a ridiculous anime fight scene where everyone's planning 10 moves in advance and they only explain every step after the 'You are already dead' moment. But in real life.

God, I love this series (and by extension all your videos). It's technical enough for me to teach me new stuff about games that I might've never even thought about (I've probably learned more about collision detection than if I actually dedicated some time into it), but you still explain it just well enough. And I love the challenge itself. I only really got into speedrunning and TASes recently, yet this challenge grabs me so hard. Can't wait for part 5.

When he talked about Instant Release, I remembered Enter the Secret Aquarium 0x A Presses and thought this would be when they discovered Pause-Buffered Hitstun, but I guess not. Did they already know the HOLP was tied to rendering at that time and just didn't think of the technique yet, or was Instant Release another piece of the puzzle to help them discover that? Also, as soon as Tick-Tock Clock was mentioned, I knew it would be about Spawning Displacement (another thing from that video). Man, there are still so many things to talk about. Not just Pause-Buffered Hitstun but Hyper-Speed Punching, the 10K Glitch and all the sliding nonsense. But first we need to walk before we can punch, so we'll have to go through all the discoveries from HSW first.

Na, iirc they knew it was tied to rendering but since damage causes Mario to render every other frame, it didn't seem like much use. It was later when they looked at global timers, etc. that they discovered he could be invisible the entire time. Which made it useful.
