It's interesting to me that, while in most competitions top-ranking players would NEVER share strategies, Matt And Jack joined forces in order to bring the HUMAN record down. I wish that mentality would spill over into society in nearly countless ways.

Other gaming related stuff but that used to be the case in fighting game US would have the "save that shit for nationals" mentality, if you find a powerful strategy, keep it secret and exploit it in tournament where other player won't have time to adapt. The Japanese community were sharing the strat, which meant people found counterplay to that strat, then counterplay to that and they leveled up way, way above everyone. When you teach other people to get good, you play against harder opponent, who force you to get better as well. Not sharing just mean that you'll be the best in a very small pond Nowaday, people share the stuff in discord etc and the era of Japanese player completely dominating fighting game is kinda over

Thank you for pointing out and really placing some emphasis on the changes between the different strategies and iterations. I like how you pointed out who's old strategies were still being used and then improved upon. It really helps me gain a clearer picture as someone who is not intimately familiar with all of the ins and outs of Punch-Out!

Speedrun world record history is rarely straightforward, especially with a game as old and storied as Punch-Out! You gave a really comprehensive overview about one small portion of the game, and I'm looking forward to your next videos. I haven't played the game in about 30 years, but I have half a mind to pick it up and try beating it again. Thanks for freely sharing your knowledge.

I can't thank you enough for making the punch out series individual record progression. Its super cool to relive my childhood frustrations and see how people tore it apart. The series has an excellent feel to it because some of the strats have names. I started playing punch out when the arcade game came out in 1983, Super in 1984 (Arm Wrestling but I don't think that counts) and where MTPO came out for Nintendo. This game was all the rage when it came out and I was happy to be the first kid to beat tyson in my neighborhood. Keep up the awesome work!!! ~Brian~

Cool stuff as always, I know you went into it a little, but so often you hear ''X TAS'er did all these things'' but have you considered doing a more in depth video on how TAS works and evolved over time? For the uninitiated you only see the results, never the more in depth methods behind the scenes.
@Papamanual

While I know how to TAS myself... I only know how to TAS what I already know about the game... People like McHazard dive deep into the games mechanics and do all the problem solving. They are on a completely other level in ability to me. I might have an idea to combine the "Traditional Speedrun" and TAS into a single video though... It might be interesting! and it wouldnt even take me very long to make (like my other videos lol)

I'm curious as to what strategy people use for the previous three fights if they're specifically trying to get to Bald Bull. Presumably Don 1 would be the same, Hippo you probably couldn't do the RNG manipulation and just needed to wait for three opens, do people try and get the frame perfect face punches vs Tiger to save the tiny bit of time between bald bull attempts?
@Papamanual
@Papamanual Жыл бұрын
People mostly try the TAS strat on Don 1... TAS strat on Hippo, then usually go for the consistent strat on Tiger which can get a 47.99... Some people will also go for Tiger TAS cause there just really isnt that much to lose if you miss 1 punch

24:50 Couldn't have Zallard just interrupted the hook to get Bull down for the third time? Looks like his health was at 1 there. I mean I guess when you're going for such quick times you aren't really thinking of that but still. Either way, this was an awesome presentation. Kind of inspired me to do similar presentations on my channel. Although they'll be more tied into my own life than anything else.

I'm curious to know where the information on which decimals are invalid comes from. It Seems as though from TASsing that several frames are truncated from the end of the King Hippo fight, making it impossible to complete the fight any later than 2:59.61.
@Papamanual
@Papamanual Ай бұрын
There is a spreadsheet for fight times & valid decimals with the Tyson clock speed (which includes hippo and some other fights) and it says it 2:59.99 is a valid time. While I have not tested it, do you mean the end of R1 or the end of R3? Since clock speed changes between rounds for almost all of the fights, so that might have an effect, but i am very surprised its truncated all the way at 2:59.61 in R3
@yellowdicesam
@yellowdicesam 21 күн бұрын
I’m pretty sure I’ve tassed a 2:59.97 round 3 on hippo before. With that said, yeah I’m definitely curious on what decimals are possible. Clock speed is quirky

Is is possible that there could be a seperate category speedrun where an AI goes through the games configuration files frame by frame brute forcing every fight to be as fast as legitimately possible (no timestop allowed) the AI or sofware know what every possible button inputs that the game can detect (frame by frame) every animation that your opponent could do because I know (from your videos) that every animation in the game frame by frame and also every button you press can cause the enemy to do something different or the same thing but different inputs. I predict that if this were the final tas this would be it because the AI has complete knowledge of the game's code. The only catch to this is that this must be done on an emulator.

The reason why I said you should put it in a separate category is because I don't want to ruin how ridiculous and unpredictable the game can get and that this would end all speed runs entirely and I don't want all that hard work and effort to be for nothing.
