It reminds me of China in the 1920s-40s. Except that the Earth Kingdom wasn’t fighting several multi side civil wars. Few regiments could actually go head to head with the invading force. Most soldiers were conscripted peasants with poor training and equipment, officers were ineffective and many were concerned with their own well being.

They all got wiped out cause they didnt have an army for defense. An army that doesnt attack but for defense is fine. If you were in Aang's position, you may have found it hard to swallow without avenging your fellow air nomads after you defeated the Fire Nation. Airbenders being peaceful is an understatement.
