In the late seventies or early eighties, a young journalist described an unusually shaped vehicle as "having all the aerodynamic properties of your local town hall." Who was the journalist? Jeremy Clarkson! Of course, the vehicle was the G-Wagon.

The Iranian military specifications for the G Wagon were very tough, because the Iranian climatic conditions, vehicle clearance and field repairs under battle conditions are very demanding. As an example the vehicle must be able to withstand +50C to -50C degrees temperature on the same day as in Iran you have the four seasons of temperature while one area of the country due to altitude it may be -50C, the vehicle has to be able to operate in +50C if it is brought down from the mountainous areas and driven under desert conditions. Also, because under battle conditions the vehicle may not be near maintenance and repair facilities, the vehicle must be easily field repairable without reliance on modern repair shop facilities, that is why you see so much labor hours it takes to put it together even inside a factory setting.... Most American or Russian vehicles used in the Iranian military or logistics are generally modified inside Iran to ensure they can survive the Iranian environment; even US Mack trucks had to be modified. Mercedes had and still has manufacturing facilities in Iran since 1960s.

The defender is more soild and reliable parts are everywhere and that means more then a good offroader that can be hardly found innthe bush. More hiluxs and land cruiser have seen combat the the G 😆

Some of it is not true 😁 Lada Niva is longest made SUV so far, it still looks the same as in 1977, but it’s not as fancy as the G. Lada is cheap and a true utilitarian SUV that you are not afraid to take off road, but most of the G nowadays never go off road… 😂 too expensive

The history actually starts as the "Puch G". It was the next supper success after the legendary "Pinzgauer" and "Haflinger". With no support from the government the company was sold out to Mercedes. Now the profits go abroad. This happened to many industries. Guess its a global thing. In all hernesty. Mercedes had the marketing and sales network in place. But all the tec for which Austrian engineers are famous for, like 4x4 technology and suspension has been developed in Graz, Styria and is being built there to this day. And yes, all that good stuff is also in the Ineos Grenadier. As an Austrian I might be a little bit touchy on the subject but I think it had to be mentioned. The history of the G Wagon does not start with Mercedes and it is not German engineering! See here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYjbgYWMi5WZrJI

I would be like to be a part of G-class building team, but i dont have education for that. Car is not perfect. There is lot of things that could be better and it's not expensive to achieve this. Car cant glide over rock's or any surface, air intake is too low, front radiator's are not protected. Lot of work before take any decent offroad
