This is not a headcanon, this is literally just me going "Hey you wanna know what's really weird about all of this?" and I only noticed this because I was there to witness the madness. I've never even played this game. I've never even played any game in the entire series. Why is THIS what my brain decides to obsess over? I always focus on very specific things. Anyway, I hope you find this little history/weird ass thing video entertaining. I couldn't render it so I had to record the playback lmao.

I still receive notifs from this video and half of them are from people who did not read the description or perhaps even heard what I said in the video, particularly the word "imagine." The other half are from genuinely cool folks and I thank you guys for that. Regardless, I made a big mistake that I'd like to correct myself on: The Afton virus was literally just fan speculation that I legitimately mistook for something canonical. Honestly this is an incredibly easy mistake to make in the FNAF fandom considering half of it is built on said speculation and there are lot of unanswered questions in the franchise. Also, I have since played some of Security Breach and finished Ruin, but that's just a small update regarding my understanding of that story... or whatever it is at this point.

For Freddy calling Sun and Moon it, I feel like it could imply that they were the first ones to get infected, making them seem less friendly. The other animatronics could have been considerably nicer than Sun and Moon, and Freddy might’ve realized that they weren’t all there, referring to them in their virus state. He might not have met them before the virus, leaving him to think that they’re just a sporadic, unpredictable monster that shouldn’t be handling kids.

So in the FNAF encyclopedia they did indeed refer to the Daycare Attendant as "he" in both forms, which confirms the obvious intent, but I will not overlook the hilarious fact that it took them over a year since the game's release to do that. EDIT: According to the Wiki and other officially adjacent sources, they go by he/they/it, with "they" being used for them in Eclipse form and individual forms on merchandise sites (see YouTooz.)

You know, the gender confusion with sun is not the first time this has happened in the fandom. This exact same gender presumption happened with both original Bonnie and Toy Bonnie, which the fandom assumed they were both girls before officially being revealed to be girls. Not to mention the absolute flame war that took place about Funtime Foxy's gender, because there was so much contradictory information about whether they were male or female. Scott eventually settled with them being male, but I remember the debate back when Funtime Foxy was in the "lady's night' 20/20/20 mode vividly. And then the debate right before Sister Location with Mangle as well. Great video though, I appreciate how clear and to the point you were with your argument and with your research. I think a lot of people need to understand that FNAF is much more queer coded then some people realize due to the natural androgyny that a lot of the characters possess!

Let's not forget the FNAF World Character cards! Spring Bonnie - "Is it male? Is it female? Who cares! It's a Bunny!" People forget that one that Scott did. And. Scott never settled on Funtime Foxy's gender. In UCN, I noticed that with Mangle (and I saw that they only do this with Mangle) It interchanges he/she pronouns as it talks about what he does. Yet in Sister Location, Funtime Foxy is in Lady's night. His voice actor is male, and he has he/she pronouns used on her throughout the game, yet most people say he's female just because of his face. That war is still going on. It's just much smaller.

I like the "he/they" headcanon. They definitely come off as masculine-presenting to me, but from a Watsonian perspective, it may not have seemed all that imperative to the Fazbear engineers to even give them a gender. It's been observed that a lot of details on the Daycare Attendant's design would make it seem it was built mostly for function (rather than presentation), specifically for the disabled: the five-fingered, articulated hands are the biggest evidence to the idea, as they are excellent for sign language and the attendant is the only robot in the place with such hands. (The bells supposedly being for the vision-impaired and the crawling apparently being so they can reach the kids wherever they end up is a bit more speculative, but still fun 😁). Knowing Fazbear Entertainment, they might not even see Sun and Moon as characters, just a more elaborate tool similar to the S.T.A.F.F. bots, but made fancier so it'll specifically seem like a kid-appeal character (and made way too human because FazEnt really doesn't know what it's doing a lot of the time). But on the other hand, while "they" is an acceptable gender-neutral pronoun, part of me can't help seeing Sun and Moon as separate personalities, resulting in my use of "they" as being partly in relation to two characters being in one body. Add to that the fact that they seem kind of inspired by the Puppet (itself an androgynous animatronic, though being possessed by a little girl might shift it more to the feminine side) if you squint _really hard_ (perma-smiling, needlessly creepy child-safety-bot that's *really* different from all the other animatronics), and I feel like some form of non-binary is very plausible. But bottom line, I love them. Man, between the Daycare Attendant, Mangle, Cassidy, Spring Bonnie, the Marionette, and possibly even Roxanne depending on what you believe, there's a surprising amount of gender non-conformity going on in this horror series about serial child murder.

I think that this proves that although Scott was funding republican people who weren't good candidates for the LGBTQ+ community, he himself does not share those cruel ideals even if he might not be able to know the full extent of what we go through. It isn't great he is supporting very bigoted people but at the very least his funding of them is not based on their social beliefs in particular. Either that or it was always a joke. Wouldn't be surprised for either, but considering he was religious to begin with I wasn't going to be suddenly surprised like everyone else that he swung with the elephants. Less loaded conversation aside, I appreciate every androgynous character in the series but personally am a gay furry so my selection in favorites reflects that.

By pretty much all other indications Scott’s actually a cool person with a good heart who loves his fans. And personally, if I can forgive my own not-fantastic extended family for ignorantly and misguidedly supporting awful bigots, I can certainly forgive a total stranger who has otherwise been a really good guy. My personal idea for why Freddy calls them 'The Daycare Attendant' instead of Sun and Moon is because since Sun stays exclusively in the day care, and Moon only comes out when the lights are out (When the other animatronics should be charging) … Freddy just doesn't know them as well as his bandmates or the DJ. So he only calls them the attendant instead of by their names.

This is just my opinion. I think Freddy calls Sun/Moon "it" because he views them as just a machine. He doesn't talk about them with the same fondness as the other band members. Maybe it's because of the split personalities and how Moon scared some of the children. I could see that getting back to Freddy and him having a low opinion of the daycare attendants.

I think the gender is so vague around the daycare so it wouldn't force gender roles on the little kids. That the kids could have fun without being nagged around gendered things of the past like boys can't play with dolls and girls should only be princesses. I don't know why Freddy referred to Moon as "it" until this video. Maybe Freddy didn't personally know them, he's the leader of the Glamrocks. It's probably rare that he would cross paths with Sun/Moon. Or he was calling the infection "it" because he's aware that Moon wouldn't be like that really so he didn't want Gregory to get the wrong impression saying something like "Moon will be after you." Then again, it's odd in the game that Freddy wasn't confused by his friends acting so aggressive. He said that his friends and him aren't able to harm guests, yet they clearly can under the influence of the virus! And speaking of the virus, I think Sun is constantly in safe mode, so he was protected against the virus, unlike poor Moon.

I view the daycare attendant as "he/they," thought that isn't a slight against people who prefer using "she" for Sun. I view their androgeny so they can play any roll during games or telling stories. I also subscribe to the idea that they are two separate entities in one form but still have a little cross-over inside their...circuits? Having a shared memory bank, the "dormant" one still being aware of what is happening with the "active" one, being able to communicate.

As for Freddy's treatment of sun and moon, I assumed it was because he hangs out with everyone else..but them. As sun and moon are locked in the daycare usually, and at night usually he'd be in his room (so he wouldn't encounter moon patrolling). I don't think he calls them an "it" and "the daycare attendant" out of disrespect, it's just that he doesn't know them and thus doesn't know what to refer to them as really..

I think I know why Freddy never reffers to the Daycare Attendand as "he" at all: This is because he doens't actually know him, in fact, none of the others trully know the daycare attendant actually, they just know it as "the daycare attendant" in its Moon form most likely. Let me say why: -Sun NEVER leaves the daycare, at all. He never leaves the place, the most he'd go away from the daycare is his room, and that's very damn close, so, he doesn't leave the daycare AT ALL. So, none of the animatronics actually know the Sun form cuz' he doens't leave the daycare, it doesn't need to, and the Sun side isn't programmed to. -The daycare attendant has not shown to have conversations with the other characters, in fact, when he DOES have the chance to, he stays quiet. So, it doesn't speak to any other animatronics. -The Moon side DOES leave the daycare, and only for small fractions of time as it only happens the change of hour happens, which is when he patrolls the building and then immediately leaves. Or, if we want to have him do more, he patrolls the building when the lights are out and all the kids are asleep. So, the band would know the daycare attendant with only the Moon form as it's the only time they actually get to see him. -With all the other points, we can guess why Freddy reffers to him as "it": Cuz' it doesn't even know him, he just knows he exists and that he's fast, dangerous, and quiet and that he will find anyone. The only ones that I think could actually know him are the glamrock endos, cuz' their section is filled to hell with Moon posters, so Moon must be there more often than what we think Tldr; The daycare attendant doesn't speak to fellow animatronics, so none of the others actually know him.

My personal headcannon is that Sun and Moon were crossover characters from a different franchise, so Freddy either just doesn't know them, or just doesn't realize that they have a conscious AI in the first place. Plus, Freddy could know DJ because the dancefloor seems like a reasonable place for him and the other glamrocks to be in, but they don't seem to fit the theme of the daycare at all, so maybe he doesn't know the daycare attendant because he was never supposed to be there in the first place.

I must admit that I'm one of the new fans here, I've known about fnaf for a while but I only started to pay attention to it a few weeks ago. And even if I'm now used to each of them using he/him because of Internet, I kinda feel like it feels better to use they/them because not only they have that weird gender you described, but they also have the same body so they/them could be use as neutral singular or just plural 😁 (And ngl, my gender neutral arse wants to be able to identify to them in some ways because they're both in one body and I grew up with split personality and I kinda feel great to have that representation with the light on/off being the trigger for switching)

i always liked the idea/had a headcanon of the daycare attendant not really having a specific gender identity and using any pronouns. i never noticed the whole "gender-of-the-daycare-attendant-is-never-officially-disclosed" bit, but that kinda adds to why i have this headcanon. the daycare attendant probably works with kids more than any other animatronic within the pizzalex. with that in mind, it's possible that in the story, the people who designed them purposely made them androgynous. one: by making a character androgynous, you make them flexible to a child's imagination. two: by making a character androgynous, you can teach children that one's gender presentation, gender identity, and pronouns can be related, but do not have to be. one or both of these reasons are amazing possible explanations (in my opinion) for the daycare attendant's androgynous appearance.

An interestign thing about the Sun posters of the trailers before the final one is that his design looks... different. His pants are still stripped, but they're just shades of Red instead of the Redish brown and the yellow stripes. And the "Sun" Looks more yellow and orange than his finalized design in the game, and that it overall looked a bit more "female" in it. Maybe Sun was originially going to be female, but was changed midway, I don't really know, and I really don't care either, but it's interesting to see..

Wait I actually love this idea cuz it implies that Freddy Fazbear, who seemingly knows nearly everything about everything that has to do with the Pizzaplex including its dark history, is utterly clueless about this one thing that is actually supposed to be there. This bear knows all of the other animatronics around, knows their abilities and quirks, knows about the sinkhole under the raceway, literally knows the FNAF lore to a certain extent but how to refer the weird jester thing from the daycare is where his knowledge is limited. He knows how it functions and when it's allowed out of the daycare but he doesn't know their pronouns or perhaps even their names. I am being genuine this might be the best interpretation imo

Ok i have more information on this. Fnaf has a character encyclopedia and i have it, i flipped around in it as i was watching this and figured out that they do have a gender, in face on page 194 (sun) and 195 (moon), they have the official names and gender pronouns on there pages. There are many moments that mention his gender like on suns page, the first sentence on his page it says "He's pretty bright.", this show both a pun and his gender off the bat. In his data file, its really just talking about his name, what type of animatronic he is, and where you can find him, but if you look in the other paragraphs it says "The Superstar Daycare section of Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex in Security Breach is a huge soft-play area with slides, climbing walls, and ball pits. Sun acts as the attendant here, looking after and playing with the kids who've been dropped off. He appears on ads for Sunnydrop "energizing" candy." (Yes i did put the entire paragraph in here) though this also uses his correct, cannon pronouns again. Still mentioning his gender again. But thats not all, in the second paragraph, "Keeping it Light", it shows even more of what his gender is, useing the total of 4 times in the paragraph suggestinghis gender again, the paragraph saying "Sun is a cheerful guy who seems to enjoy engaging with children. But he can get sort of intense about it, as seen when he insists on Gregory staying in the Superstar Daycare. He gets intense about keeping the lights on at all times, too-but to be fair, theres a good reson for that..." (yes i did do it again), this shows that he is more of a male that some believe. On moon, his data file saying the same but has the name of moon, he is also told to be a male, this can be found out in the paragraphs, in these paragraphs it says "When the lights go out, Sun transforms into Moon. In a Jekyll-and-Hyde-type situation, part of his face goes dark and the crescent moon area lights up. Hr then becomes a threat to children inside Superstar Daycare-chasing them and punishing them for breaking the rules (for example, making a mess).", in this paragraph of his page this metions that sun and moon are both one animatronic and mentions how they transform sort of, but most importantly this as well metions his gender again, mentioning his pronouns 2 times in this paragraph. But talking about moon, theres another paragraph much like sun called "Dropping off to Sleep", it says "Like Sun, Moon is also a candy mascot for Moondrop "sleepy-time" candy, witch sounds more that sinister. Once the power to Superstar Daycare has been shut down, moon moves around the Pizzaplex. In particular, tou need to watch out for him when the lights shut down every hour." (You may be correct, i am insane), so this is pretty solid that they are a male, but dont g÷t me started on "Tales from The Pizzaplex, #3, Somniphobia" which has him in, as well as mationing his gender multiple times in 72 pages, sadly i haven't read the chapter yet but have the book. Hm I can see Freddy referring to Moon as "it" because he might not even know their gender, if the gender fluid thing is true, he could just get confused sometimes but I don't know 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well since I remember it was said in some comments or videos that i saw that Sun and Moon weren't supposed to be daycare attendants, but instead they were supposed to work on the teather as actors, and since the human daycare attendant was fired and fazbear entertainment didn't want to expend money on building another animatronic they just decided to reprogram Sun and Moon, so yeah Moon was always a gremilin. But i think that also explains that female traits from Sun, since a lot of actors do cross-dressing that wouldn't be diferent for them both. And then by consequence they probably wouldn't bother into having any pronouns to go with. So because of that, Freddy didn't know what to call them and he probaly heard some workers call them "it" so he trough that this was their pronouns. Also i love the ideia of them mostly of the time going by He/Them, since they are seen by the Staff as boys.

Perhaps Freddy doesn't refer to Sun/Moon by their name because it's some kind of restriction in his programming that keeps him from saying their names? He doesn't refer to Roxy or Monty by their full names either. But then again, those are just nicknames so who knows?

I like to imagine they are both aporagender, a gender separate from male, female, and anything in between (unlike Androgyne) while still having a very strong and specific gendered feeling. Separately I use he/him, but when I’m talking about both of them I’ll call them the “Daycare Attendants”, and sometimes just “Sun and Moon”. I love Security Breach, but the daycare attendants now have their own, much smaller, fanbase.

Sure that is a valid reason why Freddy would call them it’s/them. But we all have to remember that sun and moon are the literal physical embodiment of the sun and moon. Therefore, technically, they are genderless and Freddie wasn’t trying to be mean he was just calling them by and it’s because they probably don’t have any genders.

I'm not sure why this is even a question as they both came off as male to me, but here I am lol. I still think they are both male, even if Sun has some feminine traits, that doesn't mean he's not male. I also think both Sun and Moon are the same person, both intertwined and split. This is reinforced in the Ruin dlc when they are merged.

I know this is a year old, but they're literally both dudes. There's 0 ambiguity like with Mangle or Funtime Foxy. Calling a literal robot "it" makes sense because it's an object. Calling a literal case of two (possibly three?) seperate cognizant entities inhabiting a single body a plural "they" makes sense if referring to both (or all) of them. Neither of those things make Sun or Moon stop being a dude. And yes, at the end of the day they're literally all just robots, but by that logic NO animatronic in the series has a gender at all, and if that's the case why pick apart Sun and Moon specifically? Sun is just as much a "he" as Freddy, or Monty, or DJ Music Man, or Bonnie, and so on. And Sun's poster being in the women's restroom doesn't mean much either; he and Moon are *characters* in an in-universe franchise that are plastered everywhere, and always come in a pair in advertisements. The restrooms near the Theater or Daycare featuring the main animatronic who lives there and who the areas are themed around makes sense; you wouldn't go to the restrooms at the Disney World campground, which is themed after Chip and Dale, and then be shocked that one of the restrooms features a poster of Dale and one features a poster of his counterpart Chip. Sun and Moon are "real" characters in that they are both sentient AIs, but they're also "characters" of the franchise, Fazbear branding.
