As someone who was instantly and has been absolutely fascinated with the Daycare Attendant since I saw him in-game, I am glad that someone finally addressed and explained the phenomenon of these two astronomical jesters having an entire sub-fanbase of their own in the FNAF fandom. The way people are held on a chokehold by Sun and Moon (and to an extent, Eclipse), expanding on their characters by giving them creative and detailed designs for their appearances, flashed out personalities, full on backstories, showering them with headcanons and even explaining how their transformation works is astounding. And with the release of the DLC and the introduction of Eclipse as being actually canon and being gentle, whimsical and calm unlike the way the fandom usually portrays him, of course the fans will have more material of the Daycare Attendant to further interpret and expand on his lore. But what I mostly liked about this video is the explanation of Sun and Moon inducing feelings of nostalgia in fans. As you explained, the Daycare Attendant is the embodiment of people’s favourite childhood memories, and so is the Superstar Daycare itself. I personally feel emotionally connected to both the daycare and the Daycare Attendant because of this, among other things about them that I love (such as Sun and Moon being themed around celestial bodies). I remember when I was a kid, I would frequently go to attraction parks, and my favourite attraction was a combination of a ball pit and a jungle gym with slides. I used to have so much fun in that place, and I wish I could go back in time to live those moments again. Seeing the daycare in the game reminds me of those good memories. This is why the FNAF fans love Sun and Moon so much. They bring comfort to us, and this is what makes them almost every DCA fan’s comfort character.

To be honest, I don't think Moon is actually evil, (as you said) just VERY mischievous and probably unintentionally creepy in his behaviour. Again, as you said, his jumpscare doesn't involve him grabbing Gregory or doing anything physical. Moon might be genuinely trying to get Gregory to sleep, he's just going about it in the wrong way. As for when he appears outside the Daycare, it's hard to say why he still chases you but I think it may be because of a tampered security protocol, likely thanks to Vanny. Or it may simply be because Moon's programming is mistaking Gregory for an animatronic. This is because the dread unit had a cut voiceline for the power diversion where it mentioned a "retrieval unit" being deployed to send all the Glamrocks to their recharge stations. This retrieval unit is obviously Moon. It's never hinted or mentioned in the game that Moon is working with Vanny either.

I didn’t know about him being a retrieval unit until this comment and that would explain a lot about why he’s… like that. If an animatronic gets low on power not only will they be difficult for a person to move, any staff handling them would have to be pretty good at improv to keep the kids happy if this happened while the animatronic was interacting with them. But if a mischievous courtly jester shows up to pull them away for nap time, that’s a whole lot more efficient and easier to explain. (Come to think of it, if you accept that Vanny’s tampering is making Moon (and likely sun) more extreme, it makes sense that without it he’d be a kinda mischievous little guy, since that’s sure how it feels to be awake during nap time.)

I feel part of this animatronic’s appeal is what I call the Destroyah effect. Basically an antagonist who isn’t completely unique or original, but when applied to a franchise it’s never been done in before, it stands out. It’s like seeing a tall person standout in a group of people.

I actually think that both, Sun and Moon, are infected by the virus. Moon is clearly affected, so why not Sun. The way I understand it, the virus doesn't just activate "killer mode", but it amplifies certain aspects of the animatronics personality by a lot. By doing this, the animatronics become dangerous. You can even hear that in some of the voice lines of animatronics like Monty or Roxy. Monty is aggressive, but should never hurt a child. But if this character trait is amplified, then he attacks people. Roxy is really competetive and hates losing. Even in her voice lines you can hear that she is suddenly much more aggressive. Chica... well she likes food and when someone is hungry, they can get aggressive I guess...? Anyway, back to Sun and Moon. Sun has no personality trait that could be amplified to the point until he hurts or kills someone. It's the opposite. He becomes too caring and can't differentiate between a toddler or older child. He doesn't let you move around, because his protective personality is amplified. This is probably why he can get distracted by making a mess, since this behaviour is also amplified. Moon on the other hand has a personality trait that can be amplified to the point until he hurts or kills someone. He wants you to go to sleep. If you don't, he will force you, even if he ends up hurting you. He even goes as far as leaving the daycare, which he probably shouldn't, since the daycare is the only area he is responsible for. Also, amplifying the "wanting you to go to sleep" aspect, could also result into him killing you, so that you can sleep... forever. One thing I wanted to mention: Monty is already known to be aggressive against others, like against Bonnie, this could still be because of the virus. They are already infected, even before they become aggressive. They probably have already been used to hunt down previous victims. Altough the virus isn't always active to make them aggressive, it still causes some problems outside of that. This could explain Monty attacking Bonnie, or Chica suddenly eating trash (I think there is one message you can find that says that Chica started doing this recently. This could have been the virus messing up her programming and amplifying her hungry personality even outside of the "killer" mode)

Along with all of the built on headcanons on how they may deal with the kids and their potential problems, in such a kind and gentle nature. They just kind of heal all of the past trauma that we might've endured as children, by being that one comfort person/partential figure or friend, that we've all needed in our lives and maybe never got. (At least for me lol) Low-key, seeing all of the headcanons of them comforting a lonely/bullied child, or when they're having a nightmare, or helping out kids with potential troubled parents and making them feel safe and etc. Like that just warms my heart and somewhat heals a part of my childhood that was unfortunately not so lucky.

I going to guess because although tragic, the other animatronics are antagonistic murderers, making them less sympathetic. And because Sun & Moon are way more friendly and have no dark past version unlike SB's Freddy (ex: OG Freddy, Funtime Freddy, Nightmare Freddy, Golden Freddy, Shadow Freddy, etc.) making people view them the new colorful and happy characters characters they are. In hindsight, it’s very surprising how little character the animatronics had up until security breach. Here, I adore the daycare attendant’s split personality, between neurotic & anxious, and psychotic & sinister. I much prefer him as one multidimensional character over interpretations of two separate, and consequently flatter individuals. And that feeling of nostalgia for places and experiences your young self has never seen, that you dedicated minutes to explaining, there is a word for that feeling; anemoia.
@BlindStarLily Жыл бұрын
It’s very telling how accurate your liminal space take on things is because the moment you began describing the room with the dollhouse, I got this pressing ache in my chest and felt the small lump in the base of my throat that I get when I’m going to start crying. I do agree with your take on wanting that childlike experience again as an adult. Hell, I pretty much confirmed with myself that I want to do childish things again just yesterday when I decided I wanted to make dolls to play with. A flash of an idea came to me and I may have to write it as a DCA trio fanfic, maybe a reader insert. A janitor character maybe. They’re shy about the fact they still like to play with dolls. One night while they’re cleaning the daycare and chatting with Sun/Moon/Eclipse, they let it slip that they bring a few dolls with them wherever they go because toys help with their anxiety. After a bit of convincing, the Daycare Attendant(s) get them to agree to use one of their breaks to sit on the carpet and just play. It’s simple, very clearly imagined with a self insert, but something I feel would sort of help with that insecurity of enjoying childish things

I find the daycare attendant to be a very unique and charming character that FNAF somehow created. Sun is highly cheerful little goofball who is shown to be pretty stressed while taking care of kids but still tries his hardest on making sure they are safe. Moon on the other hand creates a more unnerving yet also calming presence on making sure kids stay asleep or as he say that bad children will be punished if awake. Personally I love this duo not only does it create a unique twist to the FNAF animatronics but it also creates a new story line behind the lore that can create a new chapter to something else that FNAF has never done before.

I've always found fictional clowns or jesters to be comforting and something that I can look up to in times of sadness, and these two really did it for me.
@ThornWolf1 Жыл бұрын
I fell in love with them because they had the perfect balance of information and mystery, unique designs, and were both sympathetic and unnerving. Starting with design, they're not anthropomorphic animals, which already helps them stand out in a franchise of animal animatronics. The jester theme is also a standout in the glamrock setting. The fact that they are so jarringly different made them stick out in my mind. The puffy harem pants is a nice balance to their spindly torso and arms, helping to keep the silhouette from looking too much like the Puppet's. And of course the color pallette is perfect. Personally, I never really found their mask-like face unnerving. I loved the way it was designed. We knew (before Ruin) that Sun was in charge of keeping the kids entertained and safe during playtime, Moon took care of naptime and night sercurity, and that at some point Moon became corrupted by Vanny to become hostile and kidnap children. The little information we were given about them allowed fans to go wild coming up with theories. Maybe Moon was a sweet gremlin before the virus, maybe Sun missed his counterpart, and then what of the enigmatic Eclipse from the Balloon Boy game? All of this made the Daycare Attendant fun to contemplate. Moon's game of hide and seek was probably the scariest part of the game (when it didn't glitch). The dark maze, his gravelly chuckling, those two red dots watching you from across the room...The stuff of nightmares. But Sun's frantic eagerness to please and genuine fear of his other half makes him, and then his lament in Ruin along with the 1-generator jumpscare where he tries to stop Moon, makes him beyond pitiable. You just want to give the skrunkly boy a hug and a new box of crayons and glitter glue! And again, how soft Sun is brings into question if Moon was always so scary. And then Ruin showed us that Eclipse is a cinnamon roll and we collectively lost our minds.

I think a large part of their appeal is that they’re simply a breath of fresh air. Think about it, nearly every single animatronic in the franchise is some kind of animal (excluding ones like Puppet, Circus Baby, and Ballora). Sun and Moon with their celestial themes hadn’t been done before in the franchise, making them unique and interesting to watch and play with. That plus their personalities and dynamic, and you’ve got a formula for a character to easily become a fan favorite.

I mean, I can explain why I like the two; I love the whole Jekyll/Hyde concept, we don’t know if there are two personalities or two AI’s or if it’s a fragmented AI that has developed into two different personalities (according to the notes in-game, they treat Moon like a ‘glitch’, but then they brand candy and build merch around him, so that’s a pretty weird thing to do for a glitch in Sun’s system that’s too expensive to fix) and it adds so much mystery and lore to the character(s). Plus I had a traumatic childhood. I had really really bad babysitters all my life. Sun, even though overbearing, seems like he wants to be around kids and actually likes them, likes his job, enjoys what he does. Maybe he scares other kids, but I would have loved to been around someone (something) like that as a kid.

I think your spitballing was spot on with why I love Sun and Moon. As a protective oldest sibling who is trying to heal the inner child in me and has the "I can help them" attachment to several characters (you know it's crazy when I feel that way toward Fecto Elfilis of all people), I tend to get attached to characters that are in need of protection and that can protect me. I'm also a huge fan of silly jesters and cool animations, so these two were just the complete deal, with a musical side to them as well. I love Sun, Moon, and Eclipse, and while I doubt they'll be returning, I hope to see them again.

from what i've seen, the glamrocks seem to be the group of animatronics that the fandom has unanimously wanted to avoid hurting, yet they're the only ones that we're forced to hurt against their will. if it wasn't for this love of the characters in Security Breach, i doubt we would have gotten Eclipse's kindness, Chica being fixed, or to a greater extent, Roxy being implied to be a an outwardly friendly and supportive character to the point of giving her life to save someone

Bro, the fact that I've seen a lot of: "what if they were separated and not antagonists?" and I love how they seem to love (or hate) each other (especially when protrated as oneself) and being so pretty playful towards each other, which amkes me want to see a canon good Moon and a canon less miserable Sun

They actually spired me to draw them in my own art style, but give them a whole circus theme day care, attending work force out of it, and I’ve been slowly surely making comics about their little family and also being inspired by this kind idea from the sun and moon show
@fluffywhompus Жыл бұрын
What made me love them so much was not only did it bring back the circus vibes I liked from sister location but also because of the gimmick of an animatronic having two modes and the function being dependent on its surroundings if it’s light up or not. Also seeing just how genuinely afraid the sun gets when the lights go out and how he fights with himself but it also just shows that he knows how dangerous the moon can be or how he k owns something is wrong with him and is trying to keep him locked away. Also loved the idea of eclipse ever since I saw the BB world mini game and the idea of it being a mix of the two balancing them out and making a neutral party. And while he is under utilized in ruin I am glad that he does exist and is a canon feature they have

The section about reclaiming a lost childhood surprised me with how much it spoke to me. I’ve never thought of FNAF as a vehicle for that liminal experience. And I never thought of it as reclaiming a lost childhood. There’s something really sad but really beautiful about that. I’ve always felt that, but I never had a good, long-form way to describe healing an inner child and fulfilling a missing childhood need. I’ve openly joked about how my “daddy issues” made me latch onto Glamrock Freddy. My favorite cursed description of him is that there are only two ways to think of Glamrock Freddy: Dad or Daddy. My aforementioned issues turn that ‘or’ into an ‘and.’ But in all seriousness, having some way to experience a gentle father figure from whom I have nothing to fear, even in this bizarre and ridiculous context, is invaluable. I am quite thankful for a fun series like FNAF and how much it’s given me and how much it’s evidently given so many others.

Not only do I agree with everything you said, but if I maybe allowed to add to it, I believe that the Daycare Attendant's briefness could have also contributed to their popularity. Compared to the other animatronics whom we spend the whole game with, Sun only appears in the Daycare section. And Moon only comes out to hassle us during the hourly shifts. So in comparison, their appearances are pretty brief. And yet, it's because of how much they did with those characters in those brief appearances that their characters stand out. And thus arguably, makes them more memorable. They stand out, and thus, are unique. On a slightly unrelated note, I totally agree with your assessment in your In Defense of Gregory video that if the little guy had given Sunny-Bunny an "I'm Sorry" donut or an apology, he probably would have switched sides. Kinda makes me wish there was an option to indulge in Sun's desire for kiddy games at the Daycare. That would have been so cute. 😊

I’ve identified a lot with Sun and Moon and their fanon and your interpretation of their appeal (reclaiming childhood, comfort in being protected and cared for, encouraged to enjoy simple childish things) hits pretty close to my own reasons for fixating on them so much The evident anxiety and OCD-like symptoms (notably the paranoia about something bad inside of you somehow taking over and doing things you don’t want) is a major aspect for me that I find comfort in. Also a point that wasn’t mentioned is the feeling of isolation/sheltered-ness of the daycare as well as the symbolic isolation of the attendant due to their overall distinctiveness from the other animatronics. The shared feeling of being othered and alone and socially isolated is another thing I feel like can be an appeal of them as well Nice video :)

I think another reason on why they're so loved by the community is that they are very unique from the other characters. The Main four including Glamrock Bonnie consists of the same bright, colourful anthropomorphic animatronics that look like rockstars, DJ Music man sort of sharing that same "Rockstar" type look. Sun and Moon on the other hand looks more Vintage and Jester-like. I think uniqueness really plays a major role here. Hell, it's why the original Foxy was so loved by the community. He was a Broken down, Withered animatronic that was a Pirate. He was separated from the Main three and put on a separate stage. He also has a unique mechanic of making small movements from his cove before BOLTING to your left door. He's also the only one to move while being watched on the cameras. If Foxy were to join the three on stage, remove his pirate features and behave like the others, he wouldn't have been as popular.

For me, I love Sun and Moon because I'm a Daycare Attendant, I work in a daycare, and seeing these two I felt represented in a fictional world, something I don't often feel. I don't have nostalgia for Chuck.E Cheese, don't have them in Australia or really anything like it, so seeing these two I can connect to them with what they do as a job. Plus having a pair of animatronics, one being generally nice and the other only being affected by a virus, is so nice in a universe full of murder, death and spirits. There's no sad backstory, no death, just them as they are. Only a program.
@jademonass295411 ай бұрын
I think the fact that they are SO different than any of the other "main" animatronics so far is a big reason sure, the puppet and paper pals also exist but... theres not much in terms of personality there Also being voiced by kelen goff 10/10 And i may be biased by being an artist, but their poses are SO fun, be it to draw or just the fluidity of their animations (which truly shows how talented the animators were behind them)

What I saw a lot of was romanticization of Sun and Moon's role as caregivers. On top of everything else, they're the first nimatronics we see who's job is specifically caring for children, and not just "kids" but specifically those who would nap in the middle of the day. The other characters are meant to entertain an older audience, and are only seen entertaining or acting out their themes about racing, golfing, eating,singing, etc. A large part of Sun and Moon's characters are tending to kids, and a lot of creators leaned into them being.. well, dad material. That, plus their more delicate design with the frills and ribbons is the kind of thing that I've a lot of fandoms latching onto in general. You show a male or masc character being good with kids and/or being pretty and you've got yourself an army in 2 seconds.

i would have loved this game so much more if the daycare was open after the section which it appears in. as in, if it was a safe-haven type of area, where sun would talk with Gregory, that'd be the best part of it. it'd also allow people to go back for the upgrade that they probably missed.
@KweenOfKonfusion11 ай бұрын
honestly? the thing that drew me to the DCA was when Moon did the 'spinny faceplate' thing while chasing Gregory. It was just such and interesting design choice that I was immediately enamored, cause having a spinning faceplate is *interesting* for reasons I can't explain. it just kinda ignited something in my brain. Plus, like you mentioned in the video, I just loved how *expressive* the are in game! Like, yes, their faceplate is static and doesn't emote like the Glamrocks do, but the *entire rest of their body* does, to a degree that none of the other animatronics do! They wave and dance and droop and bounce and twirl and just show their emotions through their entire body and it's *interesting* to me. The way that both Sun and Moon have such distinct personalities that shine through in their limited time interacting with Gregory/The Player, kept me on my toes the entire time they were on screen and I enjoyed that. ...the fact that I have a soft spot for jester-inspired designs did not help my growing attachment, their frills and ribbons were just too damn cute for me
@drawingdragon Жыл бұрын
I can't get over the fans complaining about other fans "humanizing" characters of a generation that are quite literally explained to your face have genuine feelings (the Glamrocks, DCA, DJMM) as if the previous 8 iterations of animatronics weren't also recieving the anthropomorphized lovable treatment. That's kind of hilarious that as soon as the canon said "yeah you can do that" it was suddenly not ok anymore lol. Also speaking purely for myself, Sun immediately endeared himself to me because through him (and Glam Freddy, another one of my favorites) we finally get a glimpse of how these animatronics are SUPPOSED to be, when they aren't being designed to hunt and kill or posessed (mostly...) Just the slightest glimpse into a machine who is programmed to protect kids instead of hurt them, and is fully aware of the threat he poses to them, it's something so precious in a fandom that's been built on untold numbers of innocent children's deaths at the hands of the machines made for them. I wouldn't want it for every game, but it's such a breath of fresh air that it makes the following implications of future child murders and machines gone rogue even more tragic. Also Eclipse is fanservice done right. Re-introduce a character that isn't exactly relevant to the lore (yet...) just because we want to see him, let us feel the tragedy of "what happened to my funny scrunkly??", sympathize the evil persona ever so slightly to give us hope, introduce a really cool fusion of the two to stoke the theorizing and fan interpretation, make him absolutely darling so we get a split second of cathartic peacefulness, and leave his whereabouts and ultimate fate open-ended to let the fans write their own endings OR leave open the possibility of his future return. Brilliantly done, even though the Daycare section was a bit underutilized in Ruin imo, the absolute joy I felt at Eclipse was worth it.

Sun and Moon are probably popular because of Kelen Goff's performance. They look straight out of Sister Location. I think that they expand on the faceplates that the Funtimes were known for, but having spinning mechanisms that changes them into their respective counterpart. Also they are truly "original characters" and we haven't seen that since Sister Location. Most games have the animatronics we are familiar with, Sun and Moon are new.

I am a massive fan of Sun and Moon, I'm obsessed with these two. Like, wrote a 470K word fanfic about these scrunklies level obsessed. No joke. I love these boys. I could go on all day about why I love these two, but I think your video hit the nail on the head on most of it. I'll add this as well- Sun and Moon have really unique gameplay. Sun is one of the few animatronics in the entire series that doesn't harm you, doesn't indirectly inflict danger on you, and doesn't want to hurt you in any way. Even your companion character Freddy is more dangerous than that, so right off the bat Sun is very unique. The build up to Moon is also phenomenal, Sun and Moon have some of the best introduction and area/gameplay theming in the entire game. That's not enough to explain their overall popularity by itself, but it is definitely something I think catches people's attention and draws them in. I agree that the Sun and Moon Show didn't cause their popularity. I was in the fandom before that show was around, and I read fanfics about the two voraciously. (PS if anyone here has a fanfic I WILL read it, feed me your fanfic.) I can always tell when a fic is more Sun and Moon Show inspired than it is game or fandom inspired, the characterizations and general interests of the fic tend to be very different. There are more Sun and Moon Show fics now than there used to be since the SB fandom is slowing down a little, but the vast majority out there by far is still regular game inspired fics. Sun and Moon Show got popular because people were obsessed with these jesters, not the other way around. (I'm serious about eating your fanfic tho, if aaanybody reading this has a Sun and Moon fanfic PLEASE feed it to me I am hungrier than Chica. 18:39 This idea of feeling nostalgic for a place you never went to reminded me of a dream I had, or rather, two. I can say with a lot of confidence that I dreamt of the same made-up place twice, and it was a play area for children. It had a small plastic slide made to look like a tree stump, a giant castle decoration on the wall with a door that may or may not have been made to open, and of course children enjoying it all. It was the exact same place, but was also a place I had never physically been in. It was so weird, but it also stirred up that nostalgia for being that carefree kid again.

As someone who dealt with a lot of ✨childhood trauma✨ I definitely gravitated towards them for being daycare robots. Since I didn’t get the care I needed during childhood my brain seeks out things that can replace that, and since I grew up alongside FNaF, it became a comfort series to me. So comfort series + character meant to take care of little kids = inner child is happy. Oh and also as someone with OSDD it’s fun to see other characters who have multiple people in one body, like us. And even though Sun and Moon at first seemed like they were going for the cliche Jekyll and Hyde shtick we’ve seen a hundred times (which gets annoying as it causes this widespread belief that plural people are “dangerous” or their headmates are “bad”), they didn’t really turn out that way, since all the animatronics were just acting in ways they weren’t supposed to. The closest these games got to that cliche was the books but… the books are dumb and I refuse to accept them. Ruin further showed that Moon wasn’t evil, which was nice.

In all the posters and plushies, moon has very light blue eyes, meaning probably the only reason he is so aggresive in the games, is because of the virus. Juuuust like all the others! The only reason they're aggressive towards children all of a sudden (including not only Gregory, but Cassie too until she debugs Roxxie) is because of the messed up code! Meaning, I think that moon is supposed to be quiet and stern, just like any good parent should be when putting their kids to sleep! I even think his aggresive sounding voice lines, are supposed to be softer toned without the virus! Especially "it's past your bedtime" with his creepy sounding laugh, because imagine if he had a softer less gruff voice, with a quiet chuckle, wouldn't that seem much nicer and friendlier towards kids?
