Keep in mind that in the KHL, while they have different rules that make it not really directly comparable, Alexander Ryazantsev has the record at 114.127 MPH. Of course none of that compares to Happy Gilmore's shot breaking the glass and being clocked at 117MPH, but a friend of mine told me that movie isn't a documentary, so I'm not sure if we can trust it.

You could never shoot the puck in game condition like that. And you almost never can shoot it like NHL does. Few strides of speed and shoot. In KHL you can take basically unlimited speed and give it a whack.

I heard Martin Brodeur say once that when he entered the league, there were 1-3 guys in the league who could shoot around 100 mph. Then in the middle of his career there were 1-2 per team that could shoot that hard. At the end of his career it was back to 1-2 in the entire league.

No doubt thanks to players like Wendel Clarke, who showed how much more accurate a wrist shot was. I was never a fan of that goon, but, credit where it's due, Clarke did bring the wristshot back from the dead.

Exactly. Harder to produce results even if your clappers are insanely fast. Few players can one-time at high speeds and still be lethal in effectiveness. Ovi, Stam, Laine come to mind. One thing I like about Zegras is that his one-time from the circle is amazing, even though he is popular for scoring via picking the puck off the ice. He can score in every way. The next gens like Bedard are just going to keep the variety coming. Fun time to be into hockey.

@@beerleagueeverything8030 There's a similar concept in play in baseball. You've got power hitters who can hit for distance (and more home runs), while contact hitters are more able to hit the ball where the fielders aren't (getting on base more often). It's the rare player who can do both well.

So glad you rightfully started this with an Al Macinnis clip. He will always be the king of the slapshot to me. Not only could he launch the puck at over 100 mph with a wooden stick, he was pinpoint accurate and consistent with it as well. Even though many players have exceeded his speed these days, I don't think anyone has yet matched his combined level of speed, accuracy, and consistency.

Techniques changed a ton while athleticism and size increased too. We went from goalies who almost never went down in the 70s and who flopped when they did to Butterfly goalies with controllable movement while still being somewhat upright. As goalies got much better, teams had to adapt and set up plays to get the goalie moving side to side.

I played men's A league down in Phoenix, a lot of ex-NHL guys and a bunch of ex-D1 players down in that league. I played defense and had Pro stock equipment. I took a few slap shots off the shin pads from D1 and ex NHL guys, my whole leg went numb. I couldn't believe the power. It's been a few years since I played and I still have a lump on my shin bone above the ankle where I caught one.

@@TheSnatchbuckler I cringe when I see NHL players blocking shots, I can just imagine the pain as I've felt it, maybe not quite as bad, but real close. I used to come home from Phoenix bruised from my bellybutton down to my ankles. I had CANADA in reverse and the grid pattern of the side of the puck stamped on my stomach and places the pads don't cover more than a few times. It lasts a couple of hours then it just turns to purple, black and blue.

Technology is improving shot speeds but when AL McInnis was in the twilight of his career was his shot still competitive with the elite shooters even though he stuck with a wooden (can you believe it?) stick? I think that I recall some remark about that. Could anyone clarify that for me?

I don't care what ever any one says on this one - My "Hardest Shot" player is and always will be 2# Al MacInnis (Flames/Blues; 1983-2004) He was at 185 cm and 90 Kg not one of the biggest defenders BUT with just an old wood-stick he was for near 2 decades THE most feared shooter in the entire NHL. As still active, he was described like a folklore as "The killer-puck shooter" and was almost feared by all goaltenders in the league. Even some of the elites like Martin Brodeur expressed deep concerns evrey time McInnis had the puck at the blue-line and would fire away the puck. Al MacInnies "famously" split goaltender Mike Liut's goalie mask with a shot - "There's hard and then there's Al MacInnis hard. I tried to get out of the way. If it happens too often, you have to sit down and re-evaluate what you're doing with your life." Goaltender Mike Liut talking about MacInnis' slapshot.

It made shooting more accurate and shots harder, so yes. Adding flex to stick and loft to blade made shooting high easier.

Yo, I don't mean to hate, I'm only halfway through the video so maybe you mention it later on, but I think the biggest factor in goal increases is the fact that we went from 40 to 82 games per season.. goals per game did go up, kind off (though the very highest anyone has ever scored is about 1.00 goal/game, through all eras, from the very beginning with guys like Newsy Lalonde, to Maurice Richard to Wayne Gretsky), but I can't agree with the implicit explanation that a lot of it is attributable to technique/technology.

Agree on your point, but there's been way higher than 1.0 way back when. Joe Malone scored 44 in 20 back in 1917-18 which is 2.2 goals per game.

Everything evolve and change. Take the 'Big bad Bruins' or the 'Broad street bullies' of the 70s. Those 2 teams would be the smallest teams in the league today by height and weight. So it's not just hockey sticks that made players shoot harder, their conditioning and size help too.

As a goalie, our equipment has come a long way in protecting from these shots. The only piece of equipment that still lacks, is helmet technology. 108mph to the cage, and the cage will break. 108 to the forehead, and you will have a concussion. Chest pads, Blocker, glove, leg pads, could all withstand this, with maybe a minor sting, but you'd be fine to continue to play. Headshot and your backup will finish the game.

Did Bobby's goal at 4:09 look familiar? Connor must have been watching Bobby Orr footage because he pulled what was basically the same move on Rielly a few years ago. Which you know since you've all seen it a bunch of times. McDavid is the only player since Orr too have the speed and skill required to even attempt moves like this. I do not think weight has a direct translation into the speed of the shot, I was one of the smallest players on the team in my teenage years and always had the hardest shot, I think it is more about the burst, I was also doing the weight throw in a 20kg higher category just because of the momentum

Can’t remember which player. But the same season chara broke that record at the AS game, someone else had a harder shot than that in an actual game. But because the player wasn’t an all star it got swept under the rug. So I’ve always been really salty about people saying Chara had the hardest shot.
