There is solid historical evidence that Prophet Muhammad followed a lunisolar calendar all his life whereby the lunar months were fixed with respect to the climatic seasons. He followed the Quraysh version of the Arabian Calendar when he lived in Mecca and followed the almost parallel Medina version of the Arabian Calendar after his Hijra. Both versions intercalated the Arabian Calendar by adding a thirteenth month every two to three years. The scheme of Mecca of intercalating the Arabian Calendar was called Nasīʾ and was strongly associated with the worship of the sun, while the Ansar in Medina followed the scheme of the Jews living in Medina, which was based on the Metonic Cycle. The two schemes allowed the Arabian months to stay synchronous between the two localities, with the exception of some years. . I believe the Quran’s abolition of Nasīʾ was specific to the intercalation method of Quraysh because of its strong connection with paganism. Otherwise, other methods, like the method of the Jews, should be considered. . Even if Muslim scholars reject modifying the purely lunar Hijri Calendar, to a lunisolar calendar, it remains important to study the calendar the Prophet used. This is true because of the contradictions between the dating of some of the foundational events of Islam and their narrations when the climatic conditions are mentioned in the narration. For example, the narrative of the Farewell Pilgrimage indicates it occurred in intense heat, while the Hijri Calendar tells us it occurred at the start of March when the weather is still pleasant and tolerable. Another example is the narrative of the conquest of Mecca indicates it occurred intense heat, while its dating by the Hijri Calendar indicates it occurred during the “cold” of January. . According to my analysis, the Arabian Calendar of Medina was always synchronized with the Jewish Calendar such that Muharram was equivalent to the Hebrew month Tishri, Ramadan with Sivan, and Dhū’l-Ḥijja with Elul. This alignment achieves the following: . 1- The prophet did arrive in Medina on Ashura day, which is mentioned by many Sahih hadiths. . 2- The Quran was revealed in Ramadan, the same month as the revelation of the Torah, as also established by Sahih hadiths. Placing Ramadan in parallel with the Hebrew month Sivan puts it at the start of the Arabian Summer, which is consistent with the meaning of the word “Ramadan.” According to this conclusion, All the “Ramadans” the Prophet fasted started in the month of May and ended in June. . 3- The Prophet delivered his Farewell Speech on the “day God created Earth and heavens.” According to my calculations, this corresponded to September 4, 632 CE, while according to the Torah, and the Hebrew Calendar, God created the heavens and the Earth on September 7, 3760 BCE. . I explain all of this in my book: “Towards an Islamic Lunisolar Calendar,” which is available from Amazon’s Kindle and Google Books.

Ramadan being around the Autumn Equinox makes more sense, as the supposed ninth month.

@@ajrwilde14 I agree. However historical evidence shows that Ramadan which the prophet fasted occurred between May and June.

Selamünaleyküm. So, according to your lecture Prophet (S:) completed his lifetime without a calendar? Then how he used to keep fast? How he calculated days for hajj? By looking at the moon? Which moon he used to look for if he didn't follow a calendar? How he used to calculate the sacred month? Kindly highlight on this aspect. Jazakallahu Khairan

The 12 months have always existed. The only thing the companions did was to make a beginning month and an ending month and made the year the Hijra took place as year 1
@oberlinio2 жыл бұрын
@@Nasir3623 another thing they might have done was stop adjusting the lunar cycle to the solar cycle.
@Nasir36232 жыл бұрын
@@oberlinio the solar calendar certainly has its advantages, but our observances and holidays like Ramadan, Eid and Hajj must be according to the lunar calendar, not the solar one
@oberlinio2 жыл бұрын
@@Nasir3623 yes by the lunar months of course. But those months' cycle within a solar cycle of a year, with adjustment/ leap month every few years. That's the idea at least :)
@brubakerbakari95236 ай бұрын
Even with the year in place (solar), the Hijri calendar is still an arbitrary Calender with no reference.
@zaheerpatel2449 Жыл бұрын
Asalaamu Alaikum. So if the calender didn't exist in the time of our Nabi Muhammad SAW. Did the months exist? For example 10th Muharram SAW mentions the date but without an official calender?

Sir plz check the Hijrah occurred in Safar 27 and ended up in Rabi ul awwal … plz correct me if I m wrong …

Islam name for religion was first coined by Allah SWT during the time of Ibrahim AS, so pre islamic doesn't mean before Prophet Mohammad PBUH.. actually Pre Islamic should be considered the time before Adam AS
@gondala7 ай бұрын
Actually this speech is self-contradiction. If hijri calendar was first used in the 16th year of hijrah, then at the time of prophet he must use a calendar that was common to them, which is lunisolar. The month for hajj were also common for pagan arab so they can't make up any month as they please because they should agree to something and we know the hajj was not started by muslims. This is similar with when the ramadan was started back then (when Quran was revealed). That mean, arab pagan knew a calendar and knew how to count it. Because arab used different calendar than lunar calendar and ramadan month was made from their calendar, that mean, to trace back to ramadan month logically we have to follow the lunisolar calendar. If we use lunar calendar to count when ramadan month is, that mean every year we lost 11 days (because lunar calendar is only 354 days). By the way, "people of the book" like Jews who were existed there at that time of prophet were also using lunisolar calendar (and obviously they wouldn't using lunar calendar). If we don't believe with pagan arab, then at least we sure that jews also used lunisolar calendar at that time.
