When the Romans chose a successor to Romulus they came up with an important compromise between the Romans and Sabines. They agreed to let the Romans choose the King but the person had to be a Sabine. The Romans chose Numa who was loved by both Romans and Sabines. Numa is the person credited with Starting many of the Religious importance and rituals of Rome. Numa introduced the Vestal Virgins, Built the Temple of Janus. In the Temple of Janus tradition was if the Temples door is closed when at peace and open when at war. For most of Numa's reign the doors were closed which was a rarity during the history of Rome. Romulus also introduced the position of Pontifex Maximus a title still carried to this day by the Pope. This religious position has been around for an amazing 2700 Years! Some people think Numa was even more important than Romulus himself. Numa turned Rome into a Kingdom of Warriors that are very religious which helped them maintain law and order.

Remus and Romulus didn't argue over the name of the city. They argued over the location, on which hill they'd build their initial city, with their supporters split into two groups both claiming to have received signs of the gods their chosen location was the right one.
@Wallyworld304 жыл бұрын
This is one of the first stories we learn when studying Roman History. How could he flub this one? This story is also the origin story of the Roman pomerium. Romulus killed Remus when he crossed the Pomerium which became Roman law that you can't cross into the Pomerium armed. This law was ignored during Late Republic Era but was heavily enforced for hundreds of years before the fall of the Republic.

Different versions of the same myth. Some say it's who would rule. Some say it's the location of the city. Some say its the name of the city. In school I was taught it was the name and as a story its far more interesting than a quarrel over where they wanted to put a wall. Ultimately this is a myth there's no historical proof to back it up. It's just a fun little story with different versions. . Have a nice day and thanks for the comments!

@@Wallyworld30Because remus and romulus might not even and the foundation of rome was entirely a "myth" I don't think they should even be considered as historical figures for there are no accounts they existed It's like saying hercules a historical figure

There is so much being learned about this actual period all the time. In fact it seems Rome might be even older than the myths. When the Senones sacked Rome they might have lost those histories. Hopefully someday we find out the truth one day.

I'm confused about the Imperium part, so basically, the candidate was required to propose a new law for the Imperium and it had to be agreed upon?
@AncientHistoryGuy2 жыл бұрын
yup basically. Couldn't go around giving imperium to anyone so the senate would have to agree to give imperium to the candidate.
