I think it likely that the Bene Gesserit would have sent missionaries down into Salusa Secundus, perhaps sacrificing them on one way missions.. They would not have been able to resist trying to penetrate the emperors secrets. The Emperor was concerned (rightly so) about the Fremen, he saw they were hardened to a knife edge by Arrakis, an even more inhospitable planet than his Secundus. The only fighter in the imperium that could outmatch a Sardaukar fighter would be a sword master of Ginaz. The sword masters were not able to stand against the sheer numbers the Sardaukar could bring to the field. Duke Leto the Just was training a force that could match the Sardaukar, offsetting the Sardaukar's sheer ferocity using revolutionary training techniques and skill. So when the Duke's son popped up out of the sands years later with an Atreides-trained Fremen army behind him Old Shaddam almost swallowed his tongue.

Ok, im bias. I like the Sardukar. They brutal, cool and their name is badass. I like them just a pip more than the Fremen, and i used both in my Dune strategy game's. I wont challenge the canon ending of what happened to them and why, but i like to think of them on the same level at least with the fremen. Makes sense in a logical view. The Sardukar have battle experience on planets all over the universe, including deserts. They should have been better is what im saying. X3

Remember that, when the book starts, anyone with a brain is terrified of the Sardukar. Their reputation for ferocity and effectiveness is richly deserved. As Thufir tells the bloated Baron "the stories you hear about the exploits of the Sardaukar, they're not rumors are they? Those are first-hand accounts from the limited number of survivors who've fight against the Sardaukar, eh?" Every hero needs a bad guy. The better the bad guy, the more rewarding the victory over them. I totally agree that they were a great opponent for Paul to battle against. Frank Herbert put a lot of thought and care making them scary, evil, and effective. Among the best bad guys in all literature.

Thank you very much, as a massive dune fan I am in awe of Herberts detail in setting up the universe and the foundations that govern it.it's amazing just the thought he put into it's design and characters. In a book about the Gurkha I read in high school, the older families that have served the British for generations preferred to send their kids to be educated in Kathmandu and other cities in Nepal, in hopes that it would increase their chances to be chosen by the annual recruitment drives, conducted by the British empire. However, this didn’t go well, as the British officers and NCOs preferred the candidates that came from the hills. “Learning comes from the cities. Wisdom comes from the hills.” Even the British recognized that Gurkhas who came from the fierce, inhospitable hills of Nepal are rugged, self reliant, and mentally tough. Gurkhas remain to this day, the most feared and respected soldiers in the world. I have no doubt that imperial recruiters in Salusa Secondis understood that recruiting those who live in the wilderness of SS made the finest soldiers. I’m also struck by how similar Sardukar training resembled Sparta…🤔

I go by what the dune encyclopedia says since Frank Herbert considered it cannon. The present estate declared it not cannon and took it out print because Brian Herbert is capitalizing on his fathers work instead of coming up with his own story, which is to bad since Brian Herbert is a talented writer and could probably come up with his own story line

Ever since I first saw it, I've been thinking about the Sardaukar blood ritual, specifically, the sacrificial victims whose blood was used to mark the foreheads of the fighters. Where did they come from? It seems very unlikely they were/are prisoners of war: if a fighting force wants to use terror as a weapon. then their adversaries must believe they take no prisoners. The fact the Sardaukar are surrounded by secrecy and mystery says that all their rituals are secret, too, and again points to their taking no prisoners. Could you imagine the level of fear generated if even the rumour of being butchered in a blood sacrificial ritual got out? Opponents of Sardaukar about to be over-run by them would probably choose suicide rather than capture, and a form of suicide that would take as many Sardaukar with them as they could... which would deplete the numbers of available warriors and reduce their effectiveness all round. So I guess the sacrificial victims were neither ordinary prisoners, or war-captives. So where do the victims come from? Personally, I think they come from those people on Salusa Secundus who survived to adulthood but weren't good enough to become Sardaukar. Perhaps it was deeply shameful for trainees to get so far and fail at the last hurdle, and those who failed might be told that there was a path to redemption... by offering themselves up willingly as sacrifice for the blood-marking ritual. Given that there must be a great number who fail the final tests, that with so many needed for the rite, even the story that Salusa Secundus was/is a prison planet couldn't hide the numbers going there and vanishing. And perhaps the blood used for the ritual is itself an important part of that ritual; being marked with the blood of a Salusan gave that mark more symbolic power.
@jimwilliams1536
@jimwilliams1536 Жыл бұрын
I like the idea. Perhaps the sardaukar simply hunt their own native stock. Any male unable to escape capture for ritual sacrifice was not a good candidate for training anyway? They would be essentially weeding out the weak in their own bloodlines.

I was never a bif fan of Brian Herbert's stuff but I will say I did enjoy the expansion on groups like the sardaukar. I always imagined that the Fremen decimation of the Sardaukar must have been somewhat akin for them, (and forgive tragedy more crass and modern world analogy) to the United States shock at being beaten by (in so far as they were beaten) the Vietnameese or the Russians loosing to the Mujahideen in Afghanistan. It would be a crushing shock for one only accustomed to victory and glory to be smashed by "primitives" they looked down on. I would imagine however that down the ages groups like the Fish Speakers would take what was best from both forces into their tactic and mindsets. Just something I have always found Fascinating and I wished frank had more time to elaborate on in his extended universe. Very good video as always Nerd cookies!

The Russians where defeated like that because the afghans had American support. And Americans 'defeat' at Vietnamese was because they didn't have the will to continue fighting. @@MohamedRamadan-qi4hl thats why I said in so far as they were beaten. Much like the US in Somalia it was not as much of a defeat as an ignominious surrender. The worst part is the people who gave their all to have either their nation or their political leaders kind of spit on their sacrifice and make it all for nothing. At least that's how people I know who were actually there felt about it.

It doesn't bother me if someone wants to use the Dune Encyclopedia even though Herbert Foundation doesn't recognize its authenticity. The way I see it, you have the Encyclopedia, Dune Fandom Wiki, and Wikipedia as references. As long as they line up with the books, there shouldn't be a question and when they don't line up then it's up to personal preference. Brian and Kevin need to either update the encyclopedia or come out with a new one to document their books as well. I understand just mentioning their names is a hot third-rail topic for some, but it is what it is and ignoring or hating them won't make them go away. Another great video as always and looking forward to your next one. 👍🤓🍪🥛✨🔥💥

I always thought of the Sardaukar's upbringing and training as being lille the agoge system the Spartans used. In Sparta boys left their families at 7 years old and lived with others their same age. They were starved, beaten by other boys in order to toughen them up, encouraged to steal for their food, and beaten if caught. They were also encouraged to raid neighboring peoples and even the slaves the Spartans kept.

What I got from Dune was that people are people no matter how you dress them up and putting your who faith in a person you should be ready for them to make mistakes. To err is to be human so the man said that time. The Freman were still just warriors being used by an imperialist power. They were very like the Sardukar. Cheers Elaine.

I know that Dune purists don't generally like the Brian Herbert books but, as someone who has never read any of the Dune books, I made a conscious choice to read them in chronological order starting with "The Butlerian Jihad". I am currently six books in and I really like them! While the writing is not perfect (sometimes relying too heavily on coincidences and tropes) it is engaging and the story is entertaining. That being said, I can't wait to get to Frank's books as I am sure the writing is much better and it will be interesting to have a frame of reference from the perspective of an outsider to the series with no skin in the game of Frank vs Brian. * In relation to this video, I believe that I am almost to the nuking of Salusa Secundus.

I always found it strange that a bunch of criminals would follow the teachings of a religion they didn't believe in, and wouldn't try to escape the 1st time they got off the planet. This tells me there had to be something else involved in their training that allowed them to be manipulated to a point where they could be controlled in such harsh conditions. A local narcotic that couldn't be developed elsewhere or some implant maybe?
@treydixon5399

In the book, Thufir Hawat gives a great explanation of the process. Taken in small groups, trained by men who came before them, taught that all of their suffering up to this point was a secret plan to create the best fighters, then rewarded with every possible earthly desire when they are in garrison. They are loyal to their regiment because being a Sardaukar trooper means(to them) being elevated to a level beyond all other humans. You're absolutely right that if it were merely prisoners from that planet, handed a sword, and taken to another planet, the moment the door opens and the ramp goes down, they'd just run away to freedom. That's the reason for their brainwashing and the religion they are given. So there is no thought about leaving their unit.

They resemble the mamelukes and the Mongols. The conceit that combat in Dune is still mainly hand-to-hand with edged weapons means it makes sense the best warriors in the Imperium would be bred from childhood, genetically enhanced, and endowed with belief their cause beyond any doubt. I am curious as to how Duke Leto and his officers, Halleck and Idaho, had created warriors like Paul, deadlier even than the Sardaukar, according to Jessica in the first book. Even without his special gifts Paul as a teenager was more skilled than a veteran Fremen. And was Duke Leto's plan to supplant the emperor directly if he weren't able to take the throne by marriage?
@dzod

I think Herbert overplays the military prowess of both sardaukar and fremen. The books make you think these guys were invincible but in reality no more skilled than for example what a roman legionnaire would have been. Paul was trained since childhood by the best of the best. Halleck was a gladiator. Idaho was the dune equivalent of a samurai master. His mother Jessica has shaolin monk level martial arts skills.

First off I love your dissection of Dune lore I've recommended the books and movies to others and they don't like them I think it is more that they don't understand them. The stories are far more political than even the real world. The Sardaukar are Bad asses but is there pure savage warrior mythos a good gauge of a fighter? Clearly the fremen kick there ass so to me its a battle between two opposing factions that are both hardened by there environment. But in the imperium the name Sardaukar invokes fear and maybe that is the biggest thing about them

In the original dune the Baron suggests that the sardaukar are formed not just from a brutal life but a brutal life in which the leader is seen as a sort of savior raising them up from their squalor to an opulent existance creating utmost loyalty. They mention such a plan for arrakis, to brutalize it, turn it into an even greater hell, then raise the people up as a savior, thus creating a zealous force of their own.

They are most similar to the Roman Praetorian Guard, Ottoman Janissaries, and the French Foreign Legion whose elite soldiers have much in common with the Sardaukar such as the selection of the best (only 12.5% of Legion candidates pass), honor and fidelity to their army corps and especially because like the Sardaukar, some Legionnaires are former prisoners. They also look like the Spartan army in stereotypes because like the Sardaukar, Spartan soldiers were brought up from an early age and around the age 18 had to kill their first person in order to become a soldier. But this was proven in recent times to be false.

Narratively the Sardaukar shows how strength doesn’t last forever. In time the Fremen would also lose their status as the best warriors in the galaxy. And is it a bad thing for one’s society to be more than soldiers for a regime? Or perhaps the theme here is that no matter the era, mankind will surely produce warriors of great renown, because to be human is to fight.

I always thought the idea of the Sardaukar got a lot of influences from the Islamic practice of enslaving prisoners of War and their enemies children. They would convert them to their religion indoctrinate them teach them how to fight and then use them against their enemies who were often the slaves own People. These Slave Soldiers are how we got the Ghulams, Mamluks, Saqaliba and most famously the Janissaries.

Those masks they wear are unrealistic. In battle you want to be MADE of eyes and ears. If you look at new style combat helmets, they take this into account. ESPECIALLY the hearing part. If you look there will be a gap for the ears to hear unobstructed. Peripheral vision as well. ESSENTIAL when bullets are coming at you. That little whistle you get 1 second before a shell hit near you. You have to hear and see in combat. More than anything.

Personally, I only accept the works of Frank Herbert and then the Dune Encyclopedia (endorsed by Herbert) as acceptable for creating the Lore of the Dune universe.

I don’t like how Frank Herbert handled the Sardaukar. He gives them a bunch of lip service, but then whenever they are actually portrayed, they are completely underwhelming. Everyone talks about them like they’re actually a threat but then they fall apart like cotton candy whenever the main cast Is involved. Even after being completely humiliated by a small band of Fremen elders and children, Herbert continues to insist that the Sardaukar are a threat. I don’t buy it.

The Sardukar are not unlike the Spartans in lifestyle and training.

The Sparties lived a privileged life style by the standards of their time. They only have that reputation because they lived a lifestyle that was far more restraint than normal Greek elites lived

If Frank didn't say it, it's bollocks. Read the books, read between the lines,and a pox on the new film. Even though I've not seen it 😃

Somewhat similar to Ottoman empires Janissary corps. Muslims would take Christian boys from subjugated nations trained to be nothing but soldiers loyal/personal property to the sultan.

It looks like the Director wanted the Sardaukar to look like American Navy Seals. All big beards, fit, and mean looking. Solid choice.
