A discussion of a famous non canon invention that has continued to fascinate fans, the mysterious House Ordos. House Ordos itself originates from the Dune Encyclopedia and afterward Westwood Studios chose to expand upon this piece of lore themselves by featuring House Ordos prominently in their groundbreaking RTS Game Dune 2, later remastered as Dune 2000 and in the game's sequel Emperor: Battle for Dune. The developers took inspiration from the Encyclopedia as well as David Lynch’s 1984 film interpretation when creating a narrative based on Frank Herbert’s universe.

Ordos are pretty interesting. On one level, it makes perfect sense for an RTS game: You have "Elite" faction, Atreides, with fewer but more capable units, reflecting them putting a higher premium on human life (and thus, quality soldiers more likely to survive multiple battles). You have the "Spam" faction, House Harkonnen, with a focus on greater numbers of weaker units, reflecting their lack of concern about individual lives and preference for buying cheap, disposable machines. Between the two, you need a "Tricky" faction, one that comes at its opponents sideways, defeats them more through guile and underhandedness but will probably lose a stand-up fight. House Atreides is too noble and House Harkonnen to brutish for that approach, so sticking in a third faction makes sense. And in Dune, trickiness, deceit, and dishonor are synonymous with Thinking Machines, so making this Tricky House Ordos faction the one not afraid to use technology outlawed by the Empire also makes sense. It's also totally logical, to me at least, that not everyone would buy into the ideals of the Butlerian Jihad or follow the laws against Thinking Machines. Ix and Richesse are already implied to publicly be pushing as close to the boundaries of the laws as they can get away with, and perhaps secretly breaking them all with abandon. So, yeah, I can totally see House Ordos from the games, or something very much like it, existing somewhere in the Duniverse.

My first exposure to the Duniverse was my cousin inviting me over to check out his new PC game, Dune 2- The Building of a Dynasty back in 1992. I was hooked from day 1. Shortly after that, we rented Lynch's Dune (1984) on VHS and I had no idea what was happening, but liked it too. Then I started reading the books. I did not read the full anthology until my 30s, but love them all, even though they get weirder and weirder as you progress. Even some of the Brian Herbert stuff is ok. Great video!

My dad was either the main artist or one of the main artists on the Dune 2 game. Ren Olsen. Worked for Westwood through all the 90s. I played Dune 2000 a few times and at the time it was one of the coolest games I'd ever played. But I didn't have a computer so my joy was short lived. Around 2010 my dad showed me the copy of Dune 2 he had worked on and it was just a whole bunch of floppy disks and I laughed. I remember 2000 being on a cd and the gameplay of 2 that I saw was nothing but pixels. So if 2000 is a remaster of 2, then that is one hell of a remaster. Always thought till now they were two separate games.

I can't say I've played Dune 2 but I did play (and still own) Dune 2000! I played that game for hours and went through all the different campaigns, including House Ordos. They were so different in a lot of ways from the Atredies and Harkkonen. All the cut scenes featuring their mentat left me feeling like they were some sub-part to the spacing guild but I was making that assumption based on how the Guild reps looked in the 1984 film. It was a great game and I loved playing it!

I have been a long time player of both Dune 2000 and Emperor: Battle for Dune. Ordos has been my most favorite faction of the three. Throughout their entire campaign, they always emphasize the fact that they lack physical strength, and so they put their energy into the three things they're good at: manipulation, subterfuge and pragmatism. Their method of combat in Dune 2000 is suicide bombers, allegiance converters, and fast paced skirmishing units. In Battle for Dune, they take that a step further, completely mechanizing heir heavy units, removing the human aspect altogether. Only humans that remain are the infantry forces, whos entire purpose is to divert attention from the mechanized artillery, and rapid deployment system of drones. You would think that it'd be House Harkonnen that does the sacrificing of people through sheer sadism, but they actually deploy the heaviest of units in both games, being masters of both, defense and offense at the cost of speed. Their superweapon (Chaos Lightning) acts as the ultimate demonstration of their mastery of manipulation; it forces enemy units to ignore everything and fight each other, giving you the opportunity to strike with the "weaker, yet highly mobile" units amidst the chaos. What I also love about Ordos in Battle for Dune is how the Mentat treats you. No emotion, just pure pragmatism. She never gets angry with you, she never gets sympathetic with you. She only displays high expectation, and the matter-of-fact reality of Ordos doctrine: "Do your job, or you will be replaced with someone who does it better." The Atreides respect you, admiring your leadership and complementing it to keep you around. The Harkonnen treat you as they would treat any other slave; with disgust and depraved sadism. And the Ordos treat you with absolute pragmatism; a tool that will serve its purpose one way or another; either by being an example of what will happen to those that fail, or by securing Ordos dominance throughout the universe.

Interesting Herbert chose Ordos, which is actually comes from the Mongolian word "orda", or camp. This word is the origin of the English word "horde". Ordos is the name of a city and also a plateau that is part of a region in China known as Inner Mongolia. I wonder if Herbert chose this name specifically for its Mongolian roots or simply because he liked the name...

I don't think the creators of the House thought their idea through very well. I get the point they were trying to make but even on an ice world that imports tech, they natives would have leveraged that tech to create hydroponic gardens/farms and maybe melt a portion of the water for export instead of importing enough food to feed an entire planet. They could have come up with a special property of some of the ice or water derived from it in particular regions of the planet where radiation or dissolved minerals alter it's properties or had an effect in biology. It doesn't seem reasonable that an entire planet would become a mercantile power that didn't create their own goods or finish raw materials into wares for sale. Also buying entire armies for planet-wide defense seems unwise and such a society would have collapsed under the rule of a usurping army secretly loyal to another House or paid off by some faction long ago. The technocratic development is an interesting one but again, as you pointed out, a stand-in for other factions that the core canon did not flesh out well-enough to allow for player's to control or would have been abuse-able if taken to their logical ends still seems like a half-worked concept.

@jamesperkins191
@jamesperkins191 Жыл бұрын
It's 20,000+ years in the future, we don't really know where the name comes from. It might well be the Mountain range or it could be some sort of corruption of 'Order'. WE JUST DON'T KNOW. It might be neither. If we went back to Engalnd around 600s ago, the time of Chaucer, we'd be stuggling as much as if it were a foreign country. The time of Dune is much, much further removed from the present.

@nvelsen1975
@nvelsen1975 4 ай бұрын
Error? On your part yes... Ordos was founded by the Hetao civilisation, who came out of the Yellow River civilisation (so basically: Chinese). It is completely different from the Mongol precursor culture, the Hongshan. That's prehistoric. After that it fell under the Qin and Han dynasty of China. The Mongols didn't even exist yet. What's now Mongolia was the Xiongnu. To their east were the Wuhuan. It's only after the Yuan dynasty establishes that the region gets Mongolian influence. Next time, check something before going all pedantic against someone else.

The Ordos were always somewhat interesting to me, but also annoying. Much like the Harkonnen, the Corrinos, and indeed, most houses of the Landsraad, they're doomed to self-destruct. The fact is, no matter what, the society of the Dune-iverse cannot possibly have persisted for even decades, let alone millennia. Revolution isn't even relevant, an economy, especially one so singular as that based around Melange, simply could not sustain itself for ANY length of time. And without an economy, any existing power bloc would instantly collapse, no matter its apparent military might, or whatever implied monopoly it appears to have. It's the "Legion of Doom" problem. Bad guys CAN'T work together, and no matter how fascist everyone is, if they're all bad guys, then they can't really accomplish anything. It's the same thing they later tried in Stargate with the Goa'uld, and it just doesn't work. They're just comically inept and self-defeating. Many other Houses have a similar problem, but honestly, I'm not sure how to resolve it. Herbert kind of wrote it all into a corner with his total lack of comprehension of sociology, logistics, fundamental economics, or neuroscience.

Be mindful that _"Ordos"_ also means _"Orders"_ in Latin, as in _"The order of"_ or _"The department of"._ Yes it could be based upon the Ordos culture in Chinese history but that's a culture so obscure as to lead me to believe it isn't, especially given the European (culturally, not geographically) affinity for Latin.

Ordos actually comes from the Mongolian word "Orda" for "camp", and is also the origin for the English word "horde": It is the name of a large part of the region in China called Inner Mongolia.

Dune's setting is heavily inspired around 'the Stans' and the Caucasus though. The Ordos culture covered what's now Uzbekistan, Kirgistan, parts of Kazachstan, exactly where Herbert got his lore inspiration from.

I love popping on the old Westwood Dune game cutscenes. I love how they ran with the Lynch films for aesthetics while making it their own thing as time went on. Part of me hoped they would do another Dune RTS with FMV cutscenes. It really was a magical time for games. I said it before and I say it again, the Ordos are the most interesting of the three houses since they seize Arrakis not by bullet but by stone cold bucks. What better way to stick it to the Emperor by using his own economic systems against him?

And Ordos in dune 2 are the hidden "hard difficulty" of the game, since in gameplay they are the underdogs, having a faster but weaker Raider, the Siege tank comes 1 mission later, the lack of the missile tank, and the Saboteur being so easy to be killed. In Dune 2000 is similar but they gave mercenaries to compensate.

Big time player of Dune II 30-odd years ago. I remember the Ordos had a specialized tank that fired a gas which turned enemy units on to your side temporarily. I think they may have also had an Assassin infantry unit or something like it?

Also big time Dune II player here. Always tell the "young players" these days that if they want to learn true micro skills, play Dune II, without any unit groups and every unit having to be moved by itself. The assassin was the Ordos' palace unit. The most useless one ^^ A wall stopped them.

I played all Westwood games and what i really liked is that house ordos was run by smugglers, so yeah it makes some sense especially because you know smugglers are active on arrakis. Also that IX and tleilaxu were connected to house ordos makes sense. And that it made play the dune games more fun then only choose 2 houses.

Thanks loads.

I've said it a million times on this channel and it's great seeing it written by a lot of others but Dune 2 thanks to my dad's friend in the early 90s got him a pc and helped him learn about them... He had this disc where he saved some applications for him and on that boot disk saved for me was Dune 2! I fell in love with it straight away and it was my first pc game... everything about it mesmerized me from the music, the micro managing of units and it made me go back to him and get him to tell me more as he was a huge fan and a lot older than me... From here he showed me the show V and went into more detail on the Dune universe to where I watched the Lynch version with my mum on scifi and was blown away... I have grown up with this game and the ordos being part of that... played the update Dune 2000 and would love a remake or remaster like they did with Command and conquer, I know licensing is the issue but I still play 2000.. What a game, what a universe and roll on the next few years of part 2 and the upcoming games... finally we are spoiled again :)

Man, I burned up hours playing Dune 2000, and of the three different storylines you could choose, the Ordos story was so fricken hard in the last couple of missions. But it did make me more curious about the House and where they stood with Landsraad, especially with their open embrace of questionable technology. I wouldn't mind at all seeing more of them in future productions. And I so wish we could get a new Dune game, cause I *loved* 2000. I had Emperor but I never could get it to run on my old PC, so unfortunately, I missed that one.

Gosh, I've played Dune 2, Dune 2000 and Emperor so many times. Winning the game for all three houses. To bad they don't make games like that anymore. I think Westwood crashed by trying to do a RPG game, while the RTS like Dune and C&C were their real strength. Starcraft didn't have the same feel. Maybe Grey Goo is the real successor to these legendary games? I can still play Emperor on an old win XP laptop, but the Atreides drone aircraft is missing somehow, and they were so good at attacking the enemy spice harvest.

I grew up with the first game back in the early 90s. I played it on PC and later on Playstation, although the PC version was slightly better. I fell in love with House Ordos right away since I was already in love with the Dune lore. I love their deceptive character and use of poisons and assassins and the dystopian backround. This was truly a worthy non kanon addition to the Duniverse. Frank Herbert would have been proud. I would like to commend you for this video. The presentation was enthralling and I learned a lot about one of my favorite houses. I do hope you will cover other unknown houses sometime in the future. Apparently there were once up to 157 houses (a fluctuating number). Keep up the great work 🙃 you have my like and subscription.

I remember watching an Ordos cutscene once, don't remember where, and I felt really curious. Later on, with my own computer I tried an emulator to play Dune II and it happened to be a slight disappointment, but the idea of the Ordos in the Duniverse is full of potential, there should be something such as "Ice Power" which would make them stand out from the other houses (wind/sea power for the Atreides) like another raw or figurative resource instead of trading and smuggling with the untrustworthy reputation and mindset which would make their own society collapse. I would like to see it included in Villeneuve's work.

Dune lore is irrelevant, the supremacy of House Ordos is the only consideration. “Who is this creature?” - Duke Achilles Atreides to the Executrix “The Ordos, well the Ordos are just so hard to love” - Hayt De Vries, Harkonnen mentat “The Spice is powerful. It expands our sight. Our information is more perfect” - Edric O, Ordos mentat “You see nothing of the growing strength of the foul Ordos” - Fremen Naib “Rely on stealth rather than strength to complete your mission” - Roma Atani to the Ordos strategist and overseer “House Ordos will bring order out of chaos” - Roma Atani to the Imperial Sardaukar leadership

I loved House Ordos since I 1st played Dune Battle for Arrakis on Genesis 2. I never liked how Atreides were portrayed as completely good and the Harkonnen as pure evil. House Ordos is portrayed as "grey" faction. They are cold, calculative house, but no one can say that they are good or evil. They do punish for the failure, but we also need to remember that if you, as a commander succeed to take Arrakis for Ordos, they will reward you according to the contract. They keep they word be it about the punishment or about the reward. Also, in Emperor Battle for Dune, in one of the missions, Roma Atani advices the player that he\she should kill fremen if they start interfering with the mission, otherwise they should be left alone. Initially, Ordos don't view Fremen as a threat and therefore they don't kill them just for fun, like Harkonnen do. Even back in Dune 2, I remember Ammon stating that if possible, the Commander should avoid any senseless violence.
