I can't remember the author or series but one of the fantasy books had a genetically modified (cat, dog, a couple more critters chimera) war beasts. Like 2m to the shoulder..with the added challenge that if it got 2 hungry it might eat its owner. Elrick or something like that for the main characters name..eternal warrior?
