Not even remotely true, the statue was supposed to sit at the entrance to the Suez Canal, with its torch doubling as a lighthouse. When concerns of base sediment erosion and collapse were pointed out by engineers, due to the current in the entrance to the Suez Canal the project was canceled. The copper skin had already been built and paid for by the Egyptian and British Governments (due to Egypt being under British rule), and Frédéric Bartholdi desperately tried to find the country who would accept the statue. the US refused it several times, as they were unwilling to pay for its construction. When a private group of fundraisers pledged to raise the money, the right arm and torch were shipped to the US, and went on tour to raise the needed funds. once enough money had been raised, and philanthropist saw that this was a serious effort, the remainder of the money was donated by the wealthy. Here is a page which shows some great photographs of the arm on tour as well as the TRUE story of the statue (which is actually named) "Liberty Lighting the World” Source: www.nypl.org/blog/2015/04/07/statue-liberty-pedestal

Bartholdi was clearly inspired by the statue of San Carlone in Arona (Novara) Italy and also by the little statue on the front of the Duomo of Milan (very similar to the Liberty) which he had visited some years before.
@deadpolymers34164 жыл бұрын
The designer of the statue (Bartholdi) initially designed a statue to portray a veiled Arab peasant woman, that was intended to be placed at the head of the Suez Canal in Egypt and named “Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia". When Egypt rejected the project due to budgetary constraints, those original plans evolved into a statue of the Goddess Libertas (which was again never built), and that plan then evolved into a statue called “Liberty Enlightening the World”, for what is now known as the Statue of Liberty.
@nictamer2 жыл бұрын
That's not exactly correct. The sculptor reused some of his ideas from that concept, but it was a different project altogether.

“In 1886, The Statue of Liberty was a symbol of democratic government and Enlightenment ideals as well as a celebration of the Union's victory in the American Civil War and the abolition of slavery. Edouard de Laboulaye, the French political thinker, U.S. Constitution expert, and abolitionist, who first proposed the idea of a great monument as a gift from France to the United States was a firm supporter of President Abraham Lincoln and his fight for abolition. Laboulaye saw abolition not only as a way to eliminate immorality, but also as a way to protest repressive tendencies in France. As an abolitionist, Laboulaye was an honorary member of the Philadelphia branch (founded in 1862) of the Union League Club. The Union league Club was a group of people who were dedicated to the new Republican Party, the Union's cause in the Civil War, and the abolition of slavery. Additionally, Laboulaye was a cofounder and president of the French Anti-Slavery Society. This society was founded in 1865. In essence, it called upon all nations to abolish slavery. Additionally, the members also raised money that was then given to newly freed slaves in the United States. With the abolition of slavery and the Union's victory in the Civil War in 1865, Laboulaye's wishes of freedom and democracy were turning into a reality in the United States. In order to honor these achievements, Laboulaye proposed that a gift be built for the United States on behalf of France. Laboulaye hoped that by calling attention to the recent achievements of the United States, the French people would be inspired to call for their own democracy in the face of a repressive monarchy. When Laboulaye's Statue of "Liberty Enlightening the World" was completed, it not only represented democracy but also symbolized American independence and the end of all types of servitude and oppression. A broken shackle and chain lie at the Statue's right foot. The chain disappears beneath the draperies, only to reappear in front of her left foot, its end link broken. However, although the broken shackle is a powerful image, the meaning behind it was not yet a reality for African Americans in 1886.”

Imagine America erecting the Statue of Liberty while they still had slaves. Funny if they would've had something that represents "freedom" liberty and justice for mankind, while at the same time black people weren't free. Good thing they waited 12 years after the slaves were freed to decide to give it as a gift. And then they waited 10 more years after that to deliver it.

Wonderful!!!!In the end-time prophecy (end of evil kingdom prevalent in our present earth), we see, daughter of Zion/beloved daughter of the most High God/Ms Heavenly Kingdom (a woman figure)…..and children of God/saints/elected ones in Heavenly Grace…..I see daughter of Zion as the most obedient/submissive child of God in Heavenly Grace-stayed tuned to do the will of God/with a desire to model Lord Jesus Christ’s teachings and life (desire peace, righteousness, thankful to Heavenly Father for grace, etc.).….I see torch as Light of the world (Gospel Matthew 5: 14)……For this is what the Lord says: “I will extend peace to her (Daughter of Zion) like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream; you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; (Isaiah 66: 12)….But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. (Galatians 4: 26)….“The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins." (Romans 11: 26)….For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. ,,,, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God (Romans 8: 19)…. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Gospel Matthew 5: 1-12)…… “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven (Gospel Matthew 7: 21)….. Many people in our present earth are under the control of evil power due to sin/disobedient to our creator by first human creations in the beginning of creations (Genesis 3; Romans 5: 12; 1 John 5: 19; Job 9: 24)….Human spirit is dead/detached from heavenly/creator glory/knowledge/truth in sin…. Sin is forgiven and spirit become alive in heavenly grace and truth….Lord Jesus Christ brought Grace and Truth (Gospel John 1: 17)…So, this evil-filled (fights, wars, sufferings, death, fear, stress, robbers, abuses, persecutions, divorces, accidents, natural disasters, etc. ) earth will go away and our creator promised a peace, righteousness, etc. filled new earth for those who do His will (Isaiah 65: 17; 66: 22; 2 Peter 3: 13; Revelation 21; etc.)… Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion, see, your king is coming (Gospel John 12: 15)…..My Heavenly Father, your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Gospel Matthew 6: 10)….Amen. Lord Jesus Christ, come soon (Revelation 22: 20)!!!!
