Edits:
Park Junghwan's name was misspelled as Park Jungwhan.
Gu Li is exactly one year younger than shown in the video.
AlphaGo may in fact be 2 years old instead of 5 (debatable).
Cho Chikun is ethnically Korean, but played Go mostly in Japan. (goratings.org, the data source, also lists Cho Chikun as Japanese.)

Although most viewers focus on the Rank 1 players, this video actually tells stories of many other players. Why rise? Why drop? If you spend time on searching, you can discover the interesting world of professional Go game. As a Chinese, the video recalls many historic scenes of Chinese Go players to me. Nie Weiping, who was the best non-Japanese player in 80's, is a genius. He found his way to defeat best Japanese players, which was unbelievable at that time, considering the Japanese' long-time domination and China's circumstance in 80s. He led the revival of Chinese Go. However, his rise towards rank 1 ended when he was defeated by Cho Hun-hyun in the 1st Ing cup in 1989. Meanwhile, a challenging young Chinese player, Qian Yuping, rose and dropped in a short time. He retired from the final of 4th Fujitsu Cup in 1991 due to mental disorder, and he never recovered after 1994, which was a tragedy. Later on, Ma Xiaochun, Chang Hao and Gu Li, those best players of China were unable to beat Lee Changho and Lee Sedol. However a relatively unfamous player, Xie He, bursted in 2005-2007 and became the first rank 1 Chinese player. His performance did not last long and the ranking was dominated by Lee Sedol again. Although Ke Jie is the best player now, we cannot forget the effort of former Chinese players. They reawoke the Chinese' enthusiam towards Go and one young man finally reached the peak.

Lee Changho will be the Ratings once and future king. NObody in today's game is likely to be the top player for 15 years solid again. His hayday was 1991-2006 that's a hell of a reign on top. However, we do suffer from the ratings not being around for Go Seigen's prime. He would be the ratings' king of all times. He was basically the top player in the world undisputed from 1942-1961. There was only one match that he really lost in that 20 year stretch. Go Seigen's Elo Rating was estimated in the mid 1960's at 3200-3300, which would have been good enough for the top spots until the 1980's. However, the ratings were estimated for the mid 1960's and 70's for him. That was after he had a major head injury and never recovered from it. Seigen was hit by motorcycle and his strength never recovered. He lost at least 2 stones effective strength in sustained play. How do we know this? 1976 match with Sakata Eio -- Dominated Eio. and 1972 tournament match against Fujisawa Shuko (Elo over 3300) He forced Shuko to resign halfway through the game and was beating him by over 30pts. So, in a "throwback" game where Go Seigen was playing like he used to, he easily plays 3 stones above another 3300+ rated 9P.] I'd say, given that in the upper rankings, that 200-250 pts equals one stone of difference minimum, that Go Seigen, playing 2-3 stones above other 9P's in the 1950's equates to a 3500-* rating

@@paysonfox88 You can't go prior to 1974. Otherwise where would you draw the line? Go has thousands of years of history. Is the guy who performed the ear-reddening game worse than any of the players on this list? Or the person who won the blood-vomitting game? Those guys may have been the world #1 for their entire life.

Gastogh it's the Elo rating, if you're as 8th and you beat 1st, you gain lot of points, however, if 2 players with almost equal rating win or lose against each other, not much point is gain or lost
@ConsciousBreaks
@ConsciousBreaks 6 жыл бұрын
One more example. Ke Jie's rating at the end of this video(March 16, 2016) is 3621 and his current rating on goratings.org is 3646. Did Ke Jie's Go suddenly get much better? It's hard to say that at his level, a human can really get intrinsically much better. If we check his rating for March 16 2016 now however, it says that Ke Jie's rating on March 16 is actually 3641. This means that he actually improved very modestly from last year, which makes more sense. In the ELO system, you might have much more wild jumps that are not very representative of a player's *true* skill.

+DragonfistGaming Indeed yes, but in my opinion, Lee is still the best because he won so many games against godlike Chinese, Japanese and Korean go players like it was nothing. Early 1900s or before would not be a good example to compare as then it was not so competitive. I must agree that if we have to pick one country for the greatness would be Japan for sure.

Considering that Cho Chikun is Korean (though he played (and still does) in Japanese league) this is pure Korean dominance. The current champion is Jinseo Shin (has been for a few years now) and he dominates as well. It’s a bit of a downer for Korea that (although he is a great player) Ke Jie was the world champion when all this alphago hype was going around. His dominance lasted for four years while Koreans really dominated the field for the past 42 years since Chikun Cho got his championship in 1980.

All these nerds explaining "go" side of story of why Japan lost its place.....without a single bit consideration of history? Before the 80's China was recovering many many centuries of poverty, ww2 and civil war right after that. Not to mention cultural revolution. Korea is recovering from Korean War as well as ww2. Who the fuck would have the luxury of playing go for a living in those ages. Japan was the safe haven for go community, that's why it was dominating, by simply having no international competitor what so ever, Not because people from other countries got good. Pls.

+David Collins Hmm, considering the slide says Lee Sedol has played 10k games in >~20? years and AlphaGo has played 100k games, by extrapolation that would make AlphaGo >~200 human years old if games are played at the same rate as a human could play them. And considering it took AlphaGo 100k Go games of experience to beat Lee Sedol, the human is *still* a vastly more efficient learning machine than AlphaGo. No doubt, that learning disparity will shrink with time.

You can take the top 3-5 players from every era/century starting from the 16th century-to present day 2022 and come to the conclusion that there is no greatest of all time when it comes to Go. But just like every competitive high level professional game, there are the greatest of every era. Each great player from every era has done something incredible to solidify themselves in history as the greatest of their time and their playstyles and moves are studied and applied to today's game only to be evolved and refined to the next generation so that they may create modern day moves that are original based off of their predecessors. The game is timeless.

Two facts. 1. Cho chikun is korean. but his Go group is japan. 2nd. Untill 1988, Korean competition results were not reflected in world elo points. The reason was maybe japanese ignore koreans. But 1988, at world major Go competition, (in korean "응씨배 세계 바둑 선수권 대회", in chinese "應氏杯世界職業圍棋錦標賽") Cho Hunhyun win this competition. Then the Japanese suddenly put Joe Hoon-hyun in the rankings. When he is 35 years. In fact, 1970s and 1980s were Cho Hunhyun's times. Normally, Go player's golden age is 10~20s or 30s. And his rankging was 6th untill his age 50. it is very very surprising record. If Korean Go was not ignored because korean national power at 1970s and 1980s, Cho Hunhyun maintained ranking no.1 for about 20 years or more.
