I remember in 1967 they sold Coke in a glass Coke glass for 15 cents, rather than 10 cents in a paper cup. My friends and I went well out of our way to drive through every couple of days for the month or two they were running the promotion, getting 15 cent Cokes in the glass. I still have about 8 or 10 of those glasses all these years later.

Der Weinerschnitzel was my first job in 1973 in Bell, California. Loved working there - we didn't have burgers at the time. Our orders were marked in pencil on paper bags, we added the totals together and had an old-fashioned cash register on which we pressed the keys to mark the total. I like to think I had a hand in inventing chili fries, since, when closing, I'd mix the old fries and leftover chili together and take them home. We also grilled the Polish sandwiches, which made them so much better! Whenever I'm in So Cal (I live in Oregon now), I must have my fill of Wienerschnitzel!

Loved the DW in Alameda, CA during my high school days. First fast food on my own when I got my driver's license. 2 Kraut Dogs and a Coke for under a dollar in 1969! Later became a hero to my daughter and her friends when I took them to a DW in Santa Cruz, CA which had a drive thru. Kids were amazed when you actually DROVE THRU!!

Graduating in 1970 in North Highlands California Der Wienerschnitzel was always the late-night munchie joint after parting all night! I moved to Santa Cruz in 1972 right next to a Der Wienerschnitzel on Soquel Blvd and at the end of the night they would give me hot dogs for the dogs and of course I would return the favor by giving the employee's a joint. I worked at the one in Buena Park, California, while in high school (1979-80). 2 teens were left alone each night to close. One night, the place was robbed and the teen girl was taken. One night when I was working, someone shot at the building and the glass door almost shattered in my face. Other than the dangers of closing, I have really good memories of working there!

Also there at the mall were other family favorites, Montgomery Ward and Cinema theater. Adults' admission for movies was 35¢ and childrens' was 25¢. I am very happy to know that Wienerschnitzel remains in business, today. Now, I feel hungry and want to go find a store and get myself a loaded Wienerschnitzel hot dog or two and sides. She was so disgusted with what they were serving she used to cross the street to the opposite corner to McDonald's and eat there for her lunch break. Apparently when the hot dogs got old and a bit moldy she would throw them away but the manager at the time would pull them out of the trash and insisted she just clean them off, cook and serve them. You are completely wrong, zenbear! I'm only 54 years old, and I distinctly remember several Der Weinerschitzel's spread across Denver in the 70's! We used to pop in at one on West Colfax on our return trip from Heritage Square amusement park in the foothills, in which the iconic building still stands AND still operates as a DW/ Hamburger Stand. We used to go to the one by our house on 52nd & Federal often, where they ran a DW/Hamburger Stand until the iconic building was razed in 2021 to make room for a Churches Chicken. Then there's one that is CURRENTLY being operated as a Der Wienerschnitzel/Hamburger Stand on Dartmouth & Broadway that was one of the original Der Weinerschitzel's to open in Denver. I don't know what part of Denver you grew up in, but I grew up on the North Side! Sounds like yous didn't get out enough to experience a Der Weinerschitzel in Denver in the 70's, zenbear!

We still have one here in Reno, always seems busy which is good, a nearby one closed after trying different menu mergers. We had an A&W, it closed as the land was being redeveloped, but there's still one in the next city over. Funny how these small chains can just stay alive.

First time I saw a Wienerschnitzel was in 1987. I was visiting my Mom in Sacramento and I noticed the weird A frame setup as I drove by. They I noticed they sold hot dogs....and I had to try em. Chili Cheese Dog was my go to. Funny thing, they are all over the Dallas area now, and I've only been to their local place once in 27 years living in the area. Now, I'll head to Portillo's if I want a really good hot dog. Cool video!

THEY HAVE THE BEST CORN DOGS AND MUSTARD DOGS….IN SAN DIEGO, USED TO GO THERE 3-4 TIMES A WEEK WHEN I WENT TO HELIX HIGH SCHOOL IN THE 1980’S. THERE WAS ONE 2 MILES DOWN THE ROAD ON UNIVERSITY AVENUE. USED TO HAVE COUPONS FOR 2 MUSTARD DOGS FOR 99 CENTS WITH A LIMIT OF 3 ORDERS. I WOULD EAT ALL 6 OF THEM WITH A PEPSI AND ORDER OF FRIES.

Really a shame how they've dwindled in Northern California! This was a treat we had every so often when my family had our couple of times a month "fast food Friday" dinners! I once had a "mustard dog" - probably one of the simplest things on the menu - but I swear it was the best! Something always appeals to me much more when you get hotdogs out as opposed to making them yourself! Haha!

Der Wiener stand is still open on A St in Hayward CA. I used to eat there when they first came to town back in the 1960's. I remember filling on the "chili dog" for less than 20 cents each.

Did they taste so good because we were young and hungry or were they just good? In the 1960's, McDonald's was not the THING in those days; if I remember correctly. Jack in the Box was just starting.

When I worked at a car wash in Reseda, CA in 1975, my lunch break every day was at the original A-frame Der Weinerschnitzel next door. The price of their chili dogs matched my paltry paycheck, and they were good, too -- I'd sure like to have those cans of chili sauce shown in this video. I wonder if that stand survived the Northridge earthquake in the '90s. Last I heard of the Schnitz, they were sponsoring dachshund races at horse race tracks.

I definitely miss this nostalgia... I would go to the one they had in Pasadena, CA, back in the 70's when I was a kid, but if I could put up McDonald's French Fries against Der Wienerschnitzel's French Fries, I would vote for Der Wienerschnitzel, by far hands down ✋🏿. The last time I came across one, was in Hayward, CA, in 2000 😢. I wish that Der Wienerschnitzel was here in Hawaii, I'd be there every single day, lol.
