Der Weinerschnitzel was my first job in 1973 in Bell, California. Loved working there - we didn't have burgers at the time. Our orders were marked in pencil on paper bags, we added the totals together and had an old-fashioned cash register on which we pressed the keys to mark the total. I like to think I had a hand in inventing chili fries, since, when closing, I'd mix the old fries and leftover chili together and take them home. We also grilled the Polish sandwiches, which made them so much better! Whenever I'm in So Cal (I live in Oregon now), I must have my fill of Wienerschnitzel!

We used to go to the one by our house on 52nd & Federal often, where they ran a DW/Hamburger Stand until the iconic building was razed in 2021 to make room for a Churches Chicken. Then there's one that is CURRENTLY being operated as a Der Wienerschnitzel/Hamburger Stand on Dartmouth & Broadway that was one of the original Der Weinerschitzel's to open in Denver. I don't know what part of Denver you grew up in, but I grew up on the North Side! Sounds like yous didn't get out enough to experience a Der Weinerschitzel in Denver in the 70's, zenbear!

Really a shame how they've dwindled in Northern California! This was a treat we had every so often when my family had our couple of times a month "fast food Friday" dinners! I once had a "mustard dog" - probably one of the simplest things on the menu - but I swear it was the best! Something always appeals to me much more when you get hotdogs out as opposed to making them yourself! Haha!

Der Wiener stand is still open on A St in Hayward CA. I used to eat there when they first came to town back in the 1960's. I remember filling on the "chili dog" for less than 20 cents each.

Same in Texas, they used to be several of them , now they are only a few left. Love those chilli cheese dogs , used to buy them a dozen at a time .

Did they taste so good because we were young and hungry or were they just good? In the 1960's, McDonald's was not the THING in those days; if I remember correctly. Jack in the Box was just starting.

When I worked at a car wash in Reseda, CA in 1975, my lunch break every day was at the original A-frame Der Weinerschnitzel next door. The price of their chili dogs matched my paltry paycheck, and they were good, too -- I'd sure like to have those cans of chili sauce shown in this video. I wonder if that stand survived the Northridge earthquake in the '90s. Last I heard of the Schnitz, they were sponsoring dachshund races at horse race tracks.

I don't remember the commercials, but I did the Der Wienerschnitzel that was in the town I grew up in in the mid-1970s. Good hotdogs!

I definitely miss this nostalgia... I would go to the one they had in Pasadena, CA, back in the 70's when I was a kid, but if I could put up McDonald's French Fries against Der Wienerschnitzel's French Fries, I would vote for Der Wienerschnitzel, by far hands down ✋🏿. The last time I came across one, was in Hayward, CA, in 2000 😢. I wish that Der Wienerschnitzel was here in Hawaii, I'd be there every single day, lol.
