X-Men Evolution was an animated series hot on the heels of X-Men the movie (2000) and following on from X-Men The Animated Series.
For some it is the definitive representation of the X-Men in animated form.

I always felt that shows like X-Men: Evolution, The Batman and Extreme Ghostbusters were great shows that weren't really given their due by the fandom of the time simply because they weren't the same as their predecessors. It's nice to see them get more positively re-evaluated over the decades since.

True. I think they all have the problem of coming right after what are often considered to be the best show of each franchise (or in Batman’s case simply the best version of the whole damn franchise) making anything that came after be not treated with anywhere NEAR the same amount of acclaim.

I will admit that I was one of those who didn't give X-Men: Evolution a chance originally. I felt the idea of aging them down was just a gimick, and it didn't apeal to me. Then I actually tuned in one day. Boy, was I wrong. While it did not adapt storylines straight from the comics, as TAS did, it still paid homage to them while doing its own thing. Definitely worth watching if you are an X fan. Also, there's the Kitty and Rogue dance scene that was a straight-up frame-by-frame recreation of Buffy and Faith dancing from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Clearly showing their WB pedigree

It’s weird that so many people were put off from the show for being about teenagers… the comic was originally about the X-Men being students. I always found TAS weird for being set at Xavier Institute when there was only one school aged kid living there who didn’t seem to actually go to school 😂

To me, this is the standard for X-Men. It was actually nice that Storm and Wolverine were side characters, especially now that anything with them would have them be up front and main focus. This also shows that you can write Cyclops as a likable dude if you just try

One of my favorite versions of the X-Men, especially after it found its footing. Once it got past leaning too much on the initial super teens in high school trope, they started telling some really solid stories with deeper characterizations. That Boyd Kirkland interview was not from 2018. He passed away in 2011. There's an episode of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Hero, which he also worked on, dedicated to him. Also, Boyd Kirkland, Craig Kyle, and Chris Yost, the main writers behind X-Men: Evolution also made Wolverine and the X-Men and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. They were kind of trying to make a Marvel animated universe but unfortunately Marvel was in bad financial shape and couldn't capitalize on the opportunity.

X-Men Evo was great! People complain about "aging down" the characters. But the concept of "teenage mutants at a special school" is ingrained into the X-Men franchise and they've done a version of it pretty much every decade. It's just instead of doing "New Mutants" or "Generation X" or "New X-Men: Academy X" with a new cast of characters, they did it with the more popular main X-Men characters.

I used to guess the part two, to their cheesy cliff hangers and people in Highschool would wonder how I knew. Stephen J Cannels school of television shows is how. Evolution told stories without butchering the major plotlines from the Comics. It's one of the best representations of cyclops in any media. It wasnt perfect, but there was a lot to love about it.

I know the good guy likes the bad guy trope has been used a lot but I did like how Avalanche and Shadowcat paired up. I also appreciated that Avalanche seemed pretty reluctant to be a bad guy but kind of felt stuck where he was. I did think it was a bit odd that the X-Men has their own school but then went to the local high school but I also recognize that was a way to build the conflict between them and the Brotherhood (as well as other students).

It also forces the X-Men to interact with regular people, at least conceptually. One of the issues I've had with the X-Men comics in the past is that they always seem to isolate themselves in the mansion. And the human friends they do have tend to disappear quickly (or get retconned into being mutants like Moira MacTaggert). Which makes their relationship with humans lose dimensionality because the only humans you see are the ones who try to kill them.

I love how you casually describe the death of Saturday morning cartoons without even really mentioning that's what it was. X-Men/Spider-Man were definitely the headliners to me. What a wonderful/unique time to be a kid it was. Though it is a bit sad to have been the last generation to enjoy it. It was quite some time ago, and years felt like an eternity compared to how they pass now. But I do remember the quality and quantity of Saturday morning cartoons declining sharply in the late 90s before I entered High School. It went from me looking forward to the Fall preview issues of TV Guide to see what new shows were coming and waking up at 5am to watch cartoons, to being bored until after 10am when anything worth watching was airing in only a few years time, although in my mind it feels like it lasted ages. I was already 2 years into high school by the time X-Men Evolution came around, I didn't really enjoy it because Gambit wasn't around for the start, and the kids seemed... "whiny" for the lack of a better word. But when they finally did introduce Gambit, he was never part of the team until the very last still frame. Come to think of it, No X-Men cartoon did Gambit any justice like X-Men Animated did. I really hope Disney doesn't fuck up X-Men 97.

X-Men Evolution is probably one of the all time BEST representation of them in terms of tv or film. And I say this as someone born in 91 who has VERY distinct and important memories tied to the 90’s show. But where that one had a lot of flaws (many of which are completely understandable) Evolution just seemed like it knew exactly what it wanted to do and be from the start. I think starting the series off with smaller stakes and ideas makes sense so the demographic they were targeting also grew with them. It’s a perfect coming of age version of the X-Men and solidified Nightcrawler as my personal favorite X-Man. It’s a shame it was cancelled when it was because it felt like they were stopped just short of really hitting the BIG iconic plot lines in X-men lore. The designs, art style, and characterization of every mutant was pitch perfect! R.I.P. to a phenomenal show gone too soon. (Wolverine and the X-men is also really good but with how short lived it was, it’s just too small a sample size to even try and compare it.)

The first movie was my introduction to X Men but Evolution helped to expand my interest and the reason I became a fan of the franchise. The 90s cartoon felt like a whole other universe which I’ve grown to appreciate. But Evolution still is my favorite take on characters like Jean, Rogue and Cyclops. I hope Marvel eventually do something to honor it’s legacy!

Having watched this casually as I was starting to "age out" of the target audience I completely forgot that x23 originated here. That's pretty big. She isn't quite harley quinn, but that is a super successful transition into the mainstream universe from a TV adaptation

People forget that the X-Men did start out as teens in the comics too. Evolution wasn't TOO far off and if anything was such a fresh take on the characters. Dare I say it had the best animated versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, and Rogue.

It was always interesting to me on how to choose which X-Men characters would be young, and which would stay old. Like by making Scott and Jean, kids, it eliminated the love triangle with Wolverine, for example. (so the genesis of wanting a young Wolverine in X23 is fascinating.)

I was born in 1985, when xmen animated series came out it hit in the face the moment the song played. Xmen evolution was like watching Dawson's Creek but with Xmen in it. All the khaki pants and sweaters, and doc Martin lookin boots reminds me of 2002 vibes. But it was good nonetheless especially for new people. Wolverine and the Xmen on Nick came close. 90s will always be it. Sucks Chris Claremont and Jim Lee all them quit when they did, I think all those stories would have really gone somewhere. I understand why they left, but multiple generations of people left with a cliffhanger dating back to the 70s, it's kinda sad . 😊

I then asked my parents to go out and get a burger too lol. A few years later imagine my shock where I found out Nightcrawler was voiced by Brad Swaile- who voiced Quatre, Dearka and Amuro Ray from the Gundam series!

Coincidentally, I just finished rewatching this show and liked it a lot more than I remembered. The first season might have had lower stakes but it did a fantastic job of introducing all of the character at the ground level. Certain design aspects like making Rogue kind of goth was inspired. Others, like all of the pleated dress pants and cargo is a constant reminder of exactly when the show was made. Spyke was fun but the fact that they finally added a black guy and then sidelined him for the last season with the Morlock subplot doesn't come off great. Overall, it's a really fun show but my best interpretation of the X-Men on screen is "Wolverine and the X-Men" which I also only recently saw for the first time. Fingers crossed that it's coming up soon on Secret Galaxy.

@AdamYJ

@@JennySparkz Maybe because there was more of a tradition of creating new characters for the main X-Men team than putting characters from the spinoff groups in them. Nowadays, there's the notion of "They're all X-Men." But at the time this was being made, the only New Mutant who had ever graduated to the team was Cannonball. So, putting someone like Sunspot or Synch in the team was something untried. Also, with Evan I think the idea was to add to tge character dynamics by having a character who was more like a regular, untraumatised kid. Every other character had their trauma or fear regarding being a mutant. But Evan was used to the idea because he knew his Auntie O was one. So, it added acharacter who thought his power was kinda cool and totally workable but wasn't a delinquent like the Brotherhood boys.

This series painted Xavier and company in an extremely unflattering light, if you ask me. The Brotherhood were just a bunch of abandoned children basically squatting in a dilapidated house. Mystique left them high and dry. None of the bills were paid. There was never any food in the fridge. They had no choice but to be petty crooks. Xavier, who had a clear surplus, could’ve helped them out. They were children, after all. Instead, he pitted his kids, who were living quite well, against the have nots. As an adult, I can’t see past that.
@fortcastellan1730

Against that interpretation, I will offer up the episode "Joyride," in which Avalanche walked up to the X-Mansion, knocked on the door (well, knocked down door) and asked to be an X-Man. And he was promptly welcomed into the fold, by Xavier, even if other students had reservations. He left at the end of the episode, but because he chose to, not because he was officially kicked out. Rogue also switched sides over the course of the show, as did Boom-Boom. The Brotherhood kids, to a certain extent, actively chose their lot....
@DetroitAlan01
@DetroitAlan01 5 ай бұрын
@@fortcastellan1730 - they were minors. They don’t get to choose. Had I been Xavier, I’d have gone to their home with Logan, Storm and a work crew. Logan and Storm would’ve had provisions for them, food and toiletries. The work crew would’ve gone about getting that house up to code. Wouldn’t have given those children a choice in the matter. Afterwards, would tell them we’d be regularly dropping off supplies and checking in on them. That Mystique may have abandoned them, as, apparently, had their own families. But, we wouldn’t be doing that. The days of them fending for themselves, which is illegal, were over. With stability, adult supervision and guidance, the Brotherhood’s biggest crimes might’ve ended up just being bad grades. Although, would’ve been addressing that too. Long to short, children are not to be left behind. They definitely are not to be warred against. Xavier handling the situation as he did, like it or not, makes him a bad guy. That’s why I regard this series as being a misfire for the franchise.
