I think sometimes people get a little too defensive about Yamcha. "He's way stronger than normal people." While that's true, he still falls way behind even the other human characters. However, I don't like the whole "Yamcha is a joke" attitude in the fanbase or the fact that Toei is treating him like a mere gag rather than a character. Yamcha actually had some good development going into the android/Cell arc that even carries over a little into the Boo arc. Essentially, he acknowledges that he's pretty useless in battle but he still sticks around anyway to help the gang in other ways. He carries sick Goku away, gives him the medicine, and watches him recover. He looks after dying Trunks and carries the injured, exhausted Gohan to the lookout after he beats Cell. The idea that Yamcha is a good guy actually comes from his very inception as a character - he goes from bandit to martial artist, doesn't give up through many failures, and is always willing to cheer on his friends and help them however necessary. He technically helped Roshi overcome his weakness for girls before the ToP. I'm actually interested to see what he does when the U7 team returns. Hopefully Toei can be a bit more inspired than "lol he's a loser"

You should try Dragonball FighterZ game. Yamcha is actually a very good playable character and seems the game developers try to show him in a positive light. Plus There is a cinematic scene where he gets Revenge on Nappa with the Saibaman and Nappa then becomes the new Yamcha!

Barndo M the sad thing is, Yamcha actually has a lot of potential. He knows he's no Goku, but he teaches himself the Kamehameha and does a decent job of catching up to the other humans when they all train together, even though he doesn't train outside of times when new threats are inbound, causing him to fall behind consistently. He wants to help, but fighting and becoming stronger was never his goal in life, it was a hobby for him. Still, when he gets into it, he improves remarkably quickly. He retired from fighting before Raditz landed and still managed to go from the weakest Z fighter before retiring to roughly 10x that to surpass the Raditz level Saibaimen. Just not enough to survive a point blank self destruct move by them. If he fought to kill he wouldn't have been. At least not against a Saibaiman

Yamcha was my favorite as a kid. I cosplayed as him during Halloween 2004. Then I watched the whole Dragon Ball Lore and I lost a whole bunch of faith in my guy. They gave everyone a chance to show off. Tenshinhan against 2nd Form Cell, Krillin on Namek, but never Yamcha. #freeyamcha

Let`s now list things Yamcha did and novelties he brought in: 1) First real challenge to Goku. First named attack of the Manga, able to easiy hit Goku trought multiple stone pillars. Three brief rounds = one win, one stalemate, one loss. 2) Knocks Chi Chi out (and everyone applauds). 3) Saves Bulma and Goku for being carrots for life (Boss Rabbit) 4) Stops Oozaru Goku. 5) Is the first and one of the two people who have figured out by themselves that Chun and Roshi were the same person just by watching him fight. 6) 3rd round in Baba`s Demon (no official training yet) compared to Kuririn who already had 5 years worth of training from Roshi who did NOT go beyond that first round. 7) Never goes beyond the 1rd final round of the Bodukai by always fighting Goku`s main rival or someone as strong (God) 8) Briefly knocks out God. 9) Is always given lip service from other figthers in the same (Goku, Tenshinhan, Roshi, God, Kuririn, random figthers at the Bodukai.) 10) Is the first human/character to master the Kamehameha after Roshi (who creates it) WITHOUT being taught and is the FIRST new generation character in the Manga who masters it the first time he uses it (Goku couldn`t and neither could Kuririn). Second character was Tenshinhan because of a copy ability. 11) First character with a controlable Ki projectile in the Manga. 12) Got gains from hundreds to thousands worth in less than a year under God and Popo (training not even finished because Saiyans arrived before scheduale). 13) Crosses Snake Way and adapts to heavier gravity faster than Goku did. 14) Gero`s official reading places him at Goku`s power level when he arrives at Namek + Goku`s pattern of formal gains. Is first mistaken by the two androids as Goku. 15) "So weak" and yet his arm against the Cell Jr broke as easily as Vegeta`s against #18. He also lasts longer against the Cell Jrs than Kuririn did (who is usually billed as stronger than he is).

Spicy Bunny He is also actually pretty good in the "og" Dragon Ball series, that is, up until the last season before DBZ. 1 He was a desert bandit before meeting Goku & Bulma, and he had some decent success at that. 2 Was the first character to put up a good fight against Goku. Actually beat/tricked Goku in their first fight. 3 He is a skilled swordsman. 4 He was usefull plenty of times whenever they got trapped by Emperor Pilaf. He gave usefull feedback plenty of times too despite not having tech, like Bulma, or ridiculousl strength like Goku. 5 He put up a good fight in a couple of battles that involved Emperor Pilaf's shenanigans as well. 6 His friendship with Puar was, cute. 7 Yeah, he did lose "first" out of the Z warriors during the tournaments. But that is because at that point his function was that he would go up against the main bad-guy of the season, before Goku.

In terms of Yamcha’s position, his senior as a pupil, Kuririn has more raw strength, but even he addresses Yamcha with the suffix “san” attached, which I think just shows how much respect he has (speaking of which, Tenshinhan, whom is about the same age as him, says things to him like “you have any cash on you?”). Even in the episode where he split up with Bulma, that was actually Bulma getting dumped by Yamcha. A man of Yamcha’s caliber would not get left by a woman. But Yamcha wasn’t demeaned by Bulma, he chose to be a clown on his own. DB is liable to have character’s value be determined by their strength, but I think the one with the truly greatest caliber as a human is Yamcha.

Ok, I know this is a joke, but people should really stop making fun out of Yamcha for being weak. I mean, remember the Namek Saga? Yamcha in the Otherworld easily took out Recoome, someone even kid Gohan, Vegeta and Krillin working together couldn't beat.That means Yamcha at that time was stronger than all three of them combined! Also, he ran Snake way a lot faster than goku and since he beat Recoome we can propose that his power level was higher than 40.000 after only a couple of days on King Kai's planet while Goku after about 6 months - a whole year had a PL of 8.000 (Without Kaio-Ken).

He actually hates Vegeta. The only reason Vegeta gets his moments is because he's a bar that Goku always surpasses by the end of most arcs. Vegeta's evolved SSB is trumped by Goku in Mastered UI; its just the law of the Dragon Ball land. Now, Bulla relates more to Gohan in the mindset that they aren't looking to train or fight all the time like pure sayians. She isn't a guy and it could bring up interesting character development to see her and Pan in Super if it goes long enough to see how they view fighting.

Meanwhe Goku wasn't able to significantly harm Raditz when he was stronger than Yamcha a year earlier, it took Gohan to cause extreme damage via rage and Piccolo using his Makankosappo/Special Beam Cannon (with Goku putting the dude in a hold) to kill them both.

He was one of my favorite characters as a kid throughout Dragon ball and DBZ, he always looked cool despite not having power and he is always there to support the Z fighters knowing he is weak...He didn't have to be there against Vegeta and Nappa, Cell, Buu but he shows up and he has always respected Goku since he met him. Also Gohan's hair Designs were based off Yamcha if I recall correctly lol and Gohan is my favorite character. Honestly, the fact that Yamcha keeps trying is such an admirable quality. And I don't care what anyone says, the scene of Yamcha cutting a replica of his sword out of a giant stone brick from Pilaf's castle with his bare hands (in Original Dragon Ball) was pretty damn awesome. The precision he would need to pull that off! Too bad the stone blade crumbled on use, not even scratching Ozaruu Goku's tail....

Goku Black arc was pretty dark, but it wasn’t brutal or barbaric by any means. Saiyan Saga is still by far the most brutal saga ever, half of the important characters at that point got killed violently. Yamcha got blown up, Tien got his arm cut off then died by exhaustion, Chiaotzu suicide bombing Nappa to no prevail, Picollo died a typical DBZ dead. And don’t get me started on that Vegeta vs Z fighters fight, easily the bloodiest and most brutal fight in DB history.
