such an amazing film and ending. so easily could have been a cheesy 80's horror/action flick,....its way deeper than that. It ends as you'd expect with the hero killing the villain, but the very last scene when the credits roll combined with this amazing music leaves you reflecting on what you've just witnessed.

The other thing that struck me was the way Jim sort of caresses John's hair with the barrel of the shotgun. He doesn't go to shoot him to make sure he's dead, doesn't spit on his body, he doesn't even have an angry expression on his face. There's a strange sort of respect that Halsey treats Ryder with that I think adds tremendous impact to the music that plays in the credits.

The Hitcher is a prime example of filmmaking perfection. Eric Red's screenplay, yet simplistic on its surface goes sideways in an operatic style, similar to the respected film "Duel." I do however believe that The Hitcher has a huge advantage. The cinematography is Oscar worthy and had this film been made twenty years later, I believe John Seale would have received far greater praise. One of my favorite films, No Country for Old Men, photographed by Roger Deakins comes to mind when seeing these rich widescreen shots of the California and Nevada desert that Mr. Seale memorialized in The Hitcher. Every shot in this film feels like I'm watching a portrait being painted with nature being its canvas. First-time viewers are fortunate here as this film was shot way before CGI found its place in cinema, corrupting the art of "waiting for the shot." The direction of this film by Robert Harmon was flawless in so many ways, which I'm understating here, but I highly suggest everyone watch this informative retrospective on The Hitcher. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnyVmpermax_eqs The performances of C. Thomas Howell, Jennifer Jason-Leigh, Billy Green Bush, Henry Darrow AND the late and great Rutger Hauer were the attention grabber for me as a teenager. HBO had The Hitcher playing several times a week in the 80s...and 34 years later it still is playing! I had the chance to Meet C.T. Howell about seven years back and it was surreal to hear him marvel at the memories of a film that I admired to such a high degree. I could go on about this film, but for the sake of keeping my thoughts at a minimum, I'll end here. Do yourself a favor and watch The Hitcher, with the lights off, and most importantly... listen to your mom and never pick up a hitchhiker.

This scene is so carthetic in the film. Jim's finally free of Ryder. The film takes a beat as the credits role to let that sink in for the audience. Jim is alone but a dark figure in the desert as the sun sets, he's never going to be the same. His life was ruined by the actions of one man. A monster. And the film kind of almost suggests here Jim's lonely oath forward is void. It lets us know that Ryder's presence is almost missed in a way. Jims game of cat and mouse with him took him to the very edge where he was willing to kill himself in the desert and blow his own brains out. For Jim haulsy the world is a different place, he was forced to grow up in a way no human being ever should. He became something awful himself in order to stop Ryder. That to me is why he's just a silouhete. No other thriller out there ever takes the chance to actually reflect on everything that happened. There is no happy ending. Just an end to the madness of Ryder and his actions.

The chemistry between both characters really sells well to an original score - this movie alone is classic in itself, I'm so happy to be born in the 80ts because the classic horror is so much outstanding rather than this shite we watch today, the music score is completely fantastic I mean who writes music like this today (come on) anyway 10/10 performance 10/10 for script writing,10/10 for every bit of film I love it (one of a kind) r.I.p

The creepiest thing for me was that as the movie progressed, the main character, toughening up to survive, started acting more and more like the Hitcher. If I was doing a sequel, I would have made him the Hitcher in the next one...

They actually did in the sequel. Terrible movie, not recommended. Sometimes it's better to leave the mystery for what it is.

I saw that the sequel is poorly rated and decided not to watch it. I am not interested in the remake either.
@Raffini6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I watched the remake because I was interested what Sean Bean would do with that role. He was ok, but one dimensional. The rest of the movie was mediocre at best. More or less the same script, but it completely lacked the philosophical layers that the original could be projected on. The Hitcher (1986) is one of the best examples of how subtleties can make or break your movie.
@DarthSparhawk6 жыл бұрын
and switched the roles of the survivor which means fundamental lack of understanding of the idea. Besides, Bean is no Rutger IMO
@Raffini6 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, that script change was a big mistake. The whole theme of the original was about tormenting the main protagonist psychologically. Killing him off halfway through the movie didn't make any sense. Unbelievable the same director worked on it. Either he never understood the script or just didn't give a shit. Or maybe the producers thought it would be a good idea to make Sophia Bush's pretty face and tits last till the end. But if that's your idea, why not start with her as the protagonist in the first place? :/

Just watched The Hitcher last night for the 1st time before it turns 37 on the 21st of February. Really liked it, great road thriller and I love this part of the music, what it represents and really cool they used it for Stranger Things S4. For some reason, The Hitcher is one of those films I wish I could literally go back in time to the 80s, haha. But at least films serve as a window of a particular time period of sorts along with its other significant attributes. One more thing about this awesome and hauntingly beautiful music piece is the fact that it tells us that although Ryder is killed for good, Jim's life will never be the same after everything he's been through, that theme of loss of innocence and growing up too quickly coz of a harsh world the movie shows. And the cast, wow. I like C. Thomas Howell, a very good serious role for him, and the late and great Rutger Hauer as Ryder, menacing with an ice cold glance. And this ending shot, beautiful and compelling.
