@@beardguy6320 Smeagol not vile? Why, he strangled his cousin to get the ring, which he had not even touched but only got a glimpse of. Is that not being a vile creature? Thief and murderer, and that was before he even touched the ring! Perhaps Tolkien should have looked a little closer at what he had written.
@ryanmattox7408 Жыл бұрын
Tolkein understood how to write enormous moments from very human perspectives in the books Bilbo’s first thought upon hesitating is that stabbing Gollum wouldn’t be a fair fight. And after that, his fear passes, and he sees Gollum not as a monster but perhaps the saddest creature in existent. The hero choosing mercy is such a common scenario it can feel cliched. But I think this film took Tolkien’s writing and reflected it very well. Bilbo’s face shows guilt and sadness. You see him choose to spare Gollum without any fanfare. The music is the part that gets me. It’s a part of the Shire/Hobbits theme. Bilbo isn’t choosing mercy because he’s a hero but because he’s a gentle soul with no real desire to harm anyone. The goodness in him isn’t some test or sign of greatness, it’s just who he is. He’s not a fighter or a killer. Give him the chance to walk away and he’ll take it.

This passed down to Frodo on LOTR. He thought initially that Bilbo should have killed Gollum right here but Gandalf disagreed and taught him a lesson. Sam wanted to kill Gollum during their march on Mordor but Frodo showed him mercy no matter what shenanigans he was up to. By the time they went back to the Shire, he was against killing Saruman and his henchmen. This is what made them the perfect bearers of the One Ring.

I once kind of learned that how pity can stay your hand and when to ”spare a life”... A good friend of mine died about 7 years ago in heroine overdose, and my sorrow and grief drove me to anger and hate towards the junkie who introduced my friend to heroine... I wanted to beat him up so bad... but one day when I looked out my apartment window, I saw him, the junkie sitting at the on the pavement... I could see his face and eyes pretty good, and realised I didn't see a junkie, and I saw pain, anxiety, loneliness, he had the face of a broken , lost and abandoned man... instead of hate, I started to pity him, and also accepting the fact that my friend made his own choices, so I couldn't put this man responsible for what happened... So I did nothing to him... about one year ago, I heard he got clean, travels to schools to warn youngsters of dangers of drugs, and even went to my friend's parents and asked for forgiveness for what happened to their son...

She taught him pity and many other things before he was chosen as the second wizard sent to lead the people of Middle-earth into standing against Sauron.
