“What a pity that Bilbo did not stab that vile creature, when he had a chance!' Pity? It was Pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need. @@beardguy6320 Smeagol not vile? Why, he strangled his cousin to get the ring, which he had not even touched but only got a glimpse of. Is that not being a vile creature? Thief and murderer, and that was before he even touched the ring! Perhaps Tolkien should have looked a little closer at what he had written.
@ryanmattox7408

Tolkein understood how to write enormous moments from very human perspectives in the books Bilbo’s first thought upon hesitating is that stabbing Gollum wouldn’t be a fair fight. And after that, his fear passes, and he sees Gollum not as a monster but perhaps the saddest creature in existent. The hero choosing mercy is such a common scenario it can feel cliched. But I think this film took Tolkien’s writing and reflected it very well. Bilbo’s face shows guilt and sadness. You see him choose to spare Gollum without any fanfare. The music is the part that gets me. It’s a part of the Shire/Hobbits theme. Bilbo isn’t choosing mercy because he’s a hero but because he’s a gentle soul with no real desire to harm anyone. The goodness in him isn’t some test or sign of greatness, it’s just who he is. He’s not a fighter or a killer. Give him the chance to walk away and he’ll take it.

This passed down to Frodo on LOTR. He thought initially that Bilbo should have killed Gollum right here but Gandalf disagreed and taught him a lesson. Sam wanted to kill Gollum during their march on Mordor but Frodo showed him mercy no matter what shenanigans he was up to. By the time they went back to the Shire, he was against killing Saruman and his henchmen. This is what made them the perfect bearers of the One Ring.

If you ask me, AUJ contained 90% of Bilbo's finest moments as a character. Unfortunately, as in the book, Bilbo has not much more development and ends up getting lost amidst the bigger folk. That's why I hope this film will be acknowledged as the best of the trilogy soon enough.

The original theme can be found on the Complete Recordings of the Fellowship of the Ring in the song "Gollum" and in part in "The Road Goes Ever On..., Pt.1". Also, in the Complete Recordings for Return of the King, you can hear a much more triumphant variation of it in "The Journey to the Grey Havens". Hope that helps. :)

same music plays in LOTR when Frodo voices his regrets and gandalf says "so do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." Its a quote about conquering evil with one simple act of courage. Here, it not only carries on that idea to the movie, but also that by sparing gollum, one act of courage, Bilbo saves Middle Earth by letting Gollum live, who stops Frodo from screwing up the mission on Mount Doom.

I once kind of learned that how pity can stay your hand and when to ”spare a life”... A good friend of mine died about 7 years ago in heroine overdose, and my sorrow and grief drove me to anger and hate towards the junkie who introduced my friend to heroine... I wanted to beat him up so bad... but one day when I looked out my apartment window, I saw him, the junkie sitting at the on the pavement... I could see his face and eyes pretty good, and realised I didn't see a junkie, and I saw pain, anxiety, loneliness, he had the face of a broken , lost and abandoned man... instead of hate, I started to pity him, and also accepting the fact that my friend made his own choices, so I couldn't put this man responsible for what happened... So I did nothing to him... about one year ago, I heard he got clean, travels to schools to warn youngsters of dangers of drugs, and even went to my friend's parents and asked for forgiveness for what happened to their son...

Gandalf was Nienna's greatest pupil among all the others who dwelt in the Halls of Nienna. She taught him pity and many other things before he was chosen as the second wizard sent to lead the people of Middle-earth into standing against Sauron. All that is known about her appearance is that she wore a grey hood. Given that Gandalf was her greatest student, his being clothed in grey may have been a mark of respect to his teacher.

A sudden understanding, a pity mixed with horror, welled up in Bilbo's heart: a glimpse of endless unmarked days without light or hope of betterment, hard stone, cold fish, sneaking and whispering. All these thoughts passed in a flash of a second. He trembled. And then quite suddenly in another flash, as if lifted by a new strength and resolve, he leaped.

Before when Bilbo was playing the riddle game with Gollum there was genuine fear. Gollum intended to kill him regardless of the outcome of the riddle game. The scenes from before gave me chills. Sméagol liked the riddle game because it reminded him of where he came from. It was one thing Gollum and Bilbo had in common. When Bilbo saw the look of sadness and despair in Gollum's eyes he knew that this strange creature had feelings and emotions just like him.

Im currently working on a fan edit of The Hobbit and I’m trying to make it into 2 films instead of 3. It’s really funny something that I first noticed now, that I haven’t heard anyone else talk about is how ‘the pity of bilbo’ has a “3 act” in DOS when Bilbo kills the spider in Mirkwood under the influence of the ring. The first time I saw that scene I was just very uncomfortable but now with time I’ve really grown to love it. It shows how the ring affects Bilbo and how he’d even kill to keep his ring. Interesting seeing all 3 acts in one film..

0:55-1:12 it’s a pity Bilbo didn’t kill Gollum, when he had a chance. 1:38-1:41, 1:56-1:59 now, Gollum is 😡 for losing his ring. 1:45-2:02 😆
