I have nothing against The Hobbit, they were extremely entertaining and I'm very happy SIR Peter Jackson made them, and while they might not have reached the level Lord of the Rings was at, they are no doubt fantastic movies. Accourding to the Christian simbology (let's remember that Tolkien was a devout Catholic) eagles represents *joy* and *strength* in some passages of.yhr Salms. The song at 2:18 is called "The Eagles". I think the lyrics are the same as the ones used for the song when the eagles rescue Frodo and Sam at the end of ROTK. @@FrankVila Absolutely, The Hobbit unfortunately was never going to live up to the Lord of the Rings. The two books are completely different in tone one for children and the other for teenagers/adults. In my opinion I think PJ and co did a remarkable job with the Hobbit trying to tie it into the Lord of the Rings and considering the time constraints that was set by the studio after he came on board late.

Actually it was at a moment where they really needed them. In the book, the wargs had a meeting as they were waiting for the goblins, Gandalf lit the pine cones on fire, and threw it at the wargs causing them to scream in pain and fear, which leads to the forest being set ablaze, and the goblins arrive due to the commotion and they’re not afraid of fire. The eagles came because they heard the commotion with the goblins and the goblins are one of their enemies. Eventually Gandalf has a talk with the leader of the eagles and they become good friends.

Tolkien states in the book they feared flying over the realms of men who were capable of shooting them down with their yew bows. I get that's a bit odd as they clearly can outrange a bow in altitude but perhaps they feared the landing portion. As a helicopter pilot takeoff and landing were our most vulnerable moments in Afghanistan so it follows. A better explanation though would be they feared the dragon.
