Let's remember that Sir Ian McKellen cried in the set because he had to film the scene of the dinner at Bilbo's house completely alone surrounded by green screens so they could add him later to the scene with CGI, unlike LOTR, where they actually builded the hobbit house and used perspective tricks to make Gandalf look taller than the hobbits.

They’ve always had cheesy scenes (Pippin asks “where are we going?” After Elrond announced the fellowship, Gimli son of Gloin hitting orcs in the groin, merry and pippin farting after eating the lembas bread, etc.) but they were always done in a way that was fun and added to a scene. CGI is a useful tool and can do things practical can't without looking just as bad, if not worse. The bulk of The Hobbit was focused on experimental filming technologies: high frame rates and filming with 3D cameras. This had a major impact on not only how they filmed, but how they designed the film. Higher frame rates require different color usage, lighting, etc, as colors would appear different on camera. So clothing, sets, and even actor makeup had to be pushed to extremes to appear remotely “correct”. The higher frame rate also meant reduced motion blur, which requires higher fidelity imagery to look good. This meant that everything had to be filmed in sterile environments (studios) with a far more analytical hand than the more guerrilla filmmaking style of the previous films, and it becomes far easier to analyze CGI. Another key difference is creature design. In the Rings films, all creatures were limited to human facial proportions so that you have have actors in makeup. Jackson wanted to push away from this and not be limited to human proportions for non human characters. They tried to use animatronics for the goblins, but the result wasn’t good enough, so CGI was used instead. Azog is another example. Jackson wasn’t happy with the practical makeup, so the character was changed to a CGI model at the last minute. Generally speaking, I think the CGI of The Hobbit is largely far more impressive than in LotR. Gollum, especially. But the difference is that LotR’s use of CGI - while impressive - was FAR less than the Hobbit. Real sets, real actors in makeup, etc. Whereas every single shot of The Hobbit has some amount of CGI, so it’s uses look and feel more prevalent. As other people have mentioned, there was also a massive amount of internal issues with the movie; Del Torro dropping out (after legal issues kept pushing the film back), forcing Jackson to take over with no additional time for pre production, studio meddling, etc. The movies were screwed long before cameras started rolling. While a lot can be said about creative choices Jackson made, I think that the films are even watchable is a testament to how hard the team worked and how much they cared, even if cynics want to focus on the negatives.
@gnomechild44592 жыл бұрын

You can’t blame the people who made the movie, it’s the studio because all that Warner Brothers want is money so they can compare themselves to Disney, they’ve been rivals for a long time. Originally Guillermo Del Toro was to direct it but due to creative differences he left the project and Warner Bros has to get Peter Jackson to direct but only have him 2 years to build the set, design costumes and find actors so that’s the reason why The Hobbit wasn’t as much of a success than Lord of the Rings
@mangomariel3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it seems he got waaaay more time and freedom for LOTR, while the hobbit was rushed. What I find weird tho is that LOTR was cheaper then the Hobbit. Avarage per movie lotr is 90m and avarage per movie Hobbit is 200m. But everything in lotr looks better, even the cgi.

Edit: I did some research and it seems like rendering everything in 3D and 48 fps was one of the main reasons for the high costs.

@@mangomariel Sadly, movies like the Lord of the Rings won't ever be made again. I really wish I could hug the producers that signed off on the Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson was an indie horror movie director, so they just said fuck it and gave him 282 MILLION DOLLARS AND EIGHT YEARS! These days you'd be lucky to get 18 months to make a movie. How he managed to fit so many practical effects in there, with some grounding breaking tech and CG that STILL holds up, is a miracle of film-making.
