OC I agree with you, this is a better depiction because in the book he did show a physical form, gollum later even discribes him to Frodo and Sam as having “four fingers on the black hand, but they are enough”. This scene shows his body completely born out of a new fire, resembling the flame of udun and ultimately calling back to Utumno, the fortress of Morgoth. The eye of Sauron should’ve been more something like the white hand of Saruman, and the palantír were already enough to show what the eye of Sauron *really* was

We all know now that the elven rings were being wielded by the mightiest beings during that time, Elrond wields Vilya the Mighty to protect Rivendell, Galadriel wields Nenya the Fair to preserve Lothlorien and to stay the evil presence around its borders, while Gandalf was aided by Narya in his perilous quest in middle earth though he never used it openly in the books, acting merely as its keeper and guardian.

I love how Sauron appears here. First, you notice that he appears like he did during the war of the last alliance, even as a spirit form, because after the downfall of Numenor he could never again take a fair form, which is a nice attention to detail. Second, how he appears wreathed in flames, which since fire is destructive and deadly, helps to show his god like nature, he's a force of nature almost, not some typical evil. Third how he toys with him, not even speaking beyond a bit at the start, because he's not evil for the sake of it, he is pure evil, same as the orcs, corrupted by the darkness.

may i ask why couldn't Sauron take a fair form after the fall of Numenor? what's the connection betweet Numenor and Sauron?
@luxitos28672 жыл бұрын
Sauron corrupted most of the people of Numenor, including it's king, into worshipping Melkor and being vengeful against the Valar for withholding immortality. He knew that, above all, Men fear death. And he played that. King Ar-Pharazon (at Sauron's urging) took the immense Numenorian naval fleet to invade the Undying Lands. This caused Eru Illuvatar, the Creator, to intervene directly which is an extremely rare occurrence. He caused Numenor to sink beneath the waves (think Atlantis) and Sauron was caught up in it's destruction. His spirit fled to Mordor but because of it, it was said he was said to "no longer be able to take a fair form." This might parallel Melkor, the one Sauron followed. As he weakened and used up his power, he lost the ability to shapeshift and remained a Dark Lord in form.

I appreciate that they didn't try to explain Sauron's backstory and reasons for becoming a villain, the way Disney often does nowadays. He remains this enigmatic, primordial, powerful foe with reasons of his own, who cannot be negotiated with, and who isn't somebody the viewer can really relate to. Almost a force of nature. Looking at you, Halbrand-totally-not-Sauron. By the time of War of the Ring, and most likely the Hobbit, Sauron definitely gained his physical body back; Smeagol has been tortured by a man with four fingers, and Orcs tell of him as going from place to place. Tolkien described Sauron's human form as "that of a man of more than human stature, but not gigantic". So, someone over 6'4'', perhaps pushing 7 feet or more, but still definitely human looking. In Return of the King script, at one point Aragorn was supposed to fight Sauron in his Annatar form. That idea was discarded for good reasons, and I'm glad they went the same route here, although Sauron's human shape can be glimpsed through fire and shadow.

I like how in this movie they showed that Sauron still has his physical form, and that the eye is simply another manifestation of him in the movies. Whereas in the books he actually had physical form and was the one who tortured Golum. And the flaming eye was more of a symbol used by the orcs.

Much can be said about the Hobbits movies, but this whole segment that ties into LotR was done so well, even better than what LotR might've done at the time. I love how the presence of Sauron is depicted more as this otherworldly being, more ethereal than an actual person, warping everything around with his darkness, like opening a gateway to his domain where he stands. Despite how many seem to be on the page of thinking LotR depicted the eye as Sauron, I always thought it was more an extension of him and he was this otherworldly ethereal being in spirit and the tower was merely a conduit to manifest him better and allow him to channel his power to the eye to scout for the ring and command all his forces whilst bound, weakened, but still formidable and scary, within the tower. Part of me wish they'd added this form of Sauron into the movies, just snippets of him presence in the tower, as it should be I gladly found out, but then never truly seeing him also commanded a greater fear of the unknown. Why I'm glad it's shown here where all we see is that he still retains the ominous form of his armor but then also loses it, being formless, which is a great way to show yet still command the appearance of something unknown.

This is where the Hobbit trilogy really started to lose me. Yeah it looks cool, but I refuse to believe that after getting bodied by Sauron and tossed in a birdcage, Gandalf just hangs out for 60 years not concerned whatsoever with Sauron having such an active presence. He was more paranoid about Sauron's return in this trilogy than he was in LOTR, but had a fraction of the evidence. "Orcs attacked us on the road" = The Enemy has returned! *ragdolled by sinister ancient god and names him* = I don't have any answers. I must see the head of my order.

Well I'm pretty sure gandalf was under the impression that after Galadriel banished him and Saruman said that he'd "finish the job" so Sauron wasn't much of a threat anymore. Gandalf was also unaware that the one ring is now in Bilbo's possession. So that's why he wasn't so worried in the 60 years between the trilogies until he discovered that Bilbo had the one ring.

One thing that (at least in the film canon, not the books) shows off how much more powerful Sauron is is comparing him disintegrating Gandalf’s staff and then lifting him up with a wave of force and slamming him into the wall, with whatever power he used ending up destroying much of the stonework as well We see when Gandalf and Saruman had their wizards duel in FotR that they can use their staffs to shove waves of force at eachother, with Gandalf only able to knock Saruman’s feet out from under him and Saruman shown to be more powerful by closing doors with his mind, knocking Gandalf across the room, and finally using the wizard force to snatch his staff away from him, but Sauron here is just crumbling staffs and fortress walls while still just toying with Gandalf

Can't believe people enjoyed this scene. Lord of the Rings brought magic in a subtle form and this videogame light effects are so downgrade to the storytelling. Remember how thin was the shield that protected Gandalf from the Balrog's sword, the visual and poetic subtlety. And Gandalft only suspected/knew about Sauron but never meet him. There is room for endless discussion about this. But one thing is certain, if Sauron had manifested himself in this way, Gandalf would never have been making fireworks or smoking. Remember how freaked out he was just finding the ring at Bilbo's house (book/movie). If you disagree it is okay but I can not accept the scene EYE-ARMOR-EYE-ARMOR for dummies and the SAUUUROOOON quote. And worst... the willhelm scream.

One of my biggest issues with The Lord of The Rings films is how they addressed Sauron. We hear so much about him and how dangerous he is. Yet, it felt disappointing that we never really get a chance to see him in action. I mean really in action. Sauron has very little scenes to express him despite the force of dark nature he is. I really wished we could see more than this small glimpse of him and the time he gets his finger cut off. He isn't just powerful, but extremely cunning. Maybe instead of that blan intro from the first film. we get to see a moment in history where he tricks the forging of the rings and manipulates the Nine Kings of Men into Darkness before the battle to stop him
