From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.
Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain.
As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide - unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

The first 2 Hobbit movies are classics. The third was unnecessary. Nevertheless, 2 out of 3 is good! I wish Peter Jackson would direct a Thor Trilogy though.

I always thought this was the most interesting part of the story. You'd think that after they killed the main villain and reclaimed the stolen treasure that everyone would live happily ever after, but it turns out even the heroic leader was just as greedy as the dragon himself. That's what really makes The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings so great; it's not just about fighting external monsters, but also resisting the evil inside ourselves. And I also love how in the second movie, Smaug actually KNEW this would happen to Thorin!
@augustandjune
@augustandjune 10 жыл бұрын
This was my favorite part of the book, too. Most of the story is pretty unemotional, until the section where Thorin goes bonkers to protect the Arkenstone. I always got the impression that Thorin almost became Smaug, the very villain who nearly destroyed his people.

augustandjune i think the biggest benefit of having three hobbit movies is that it gives far more time to develop story and characters. don't get me wrong, i read that book about ten times and will probably do so again, but the movie has taken nearly everything the book had and made it better.
@augustandjune

I know some people get upset that the films aren't "following the book," but LOTR also had a lot of changes. Anyways, I knew the series would be more kid-friendly, since the novel was written for a younger audience. I love hearing complaints about the battle in the next film being 40 minutes long. "It's not that long in the book," they say. Well, the fight lasts until almost sundown, which means the armies war for hours...LONGER than a meager 40 minutes! Ridiculous nagging.
@wafflingmean4477
@wafflingmean4477 10 жыл бұрын
augustandjune except in the book it's like and these guys were fighting here, and these guys were fighting here, and these guys were fighting here, and then bilbo is knocked out. that was okay for a younger audience but for an older one (as this is a predominately older audience) that would be a really stupid thing to do. i for one love the sound of a 40 minute battle.

Honestly, I was never so pumped to see a movie after watching the trailer until Spiderman No Way Home because I was loving this trilogy as a kid and then after that cliffhanger that Desolation left us with, I could not wait to see what happened next (we had the book, but I didn't want to read it until after the movies were done because I didn't want to spoil anything, so I was completely blind to everything)

I seriously don't get whats wrong with having The Hobbit as three movies. The book lacked detail and because Bilbo got knocked out The Battle of the Five Armies lasted a couple pages. I think that it's better as three movies cause we actually see what happened in the biggest fantasy battle.
@xddddddddddddddddddddd
@xddddddddddddddddddddd 6 жыл бұрын
If you really want to split the films, make it 2, best to end the 1st when the dwarfs arrive to the lake town with the huge shot of Erebor. That way you truly have the oppurtunity to build on the book without stretching it out too much and adding things that weren't in the book to begin with like creating an entire new character that didn't appear in any of Tolkien's work. Also the Hobbit trilogy relies WAY too much on CGI, while LotR used it only when it was neccesary. Don't hate the movies, bu not loving them either.

I really loved the Hobbit trilogy! In my opinion, the movie wouldn't be so deep and entertaining if it was exactly like the book. They did an amazing job to expand the characters' personalities. Character development in the book is almost non-existent and the action isn't great either. If you wanted it to be like the book then you would have EVERYTHING from Bilbo's perspective (so it would be quite one-dimensional) and you wouldn't have scenes like Thorin's touching death scene or the battle at Dol Guldur. Yeah, a few parts were campy but it was never meant to be epic like LOTR.

That's all due to them trying to turn The Hobbit into another Lord Of The Rings cash cow. I enjoy these movies for the entertainment and visuals, but the pace and tone are too far removed from the book's experience for me to say the movies are faithful to the original in any way. The Hobbit was a young adult book, focused mainly on a unpredictable journey fraught with peril, but mostly in the format of a digestible adventure with metered danger. The mystery and lore took the forefront, seen through the eyes of an adult no taller than the reader the book was written for. These movies are over the top in comparison to that conservative written introduction to Middle Earth. I'm not belittling Steve Jackson's accomplishments, though. It's likely that pressure from the movie industry forces him to make such choices, though I don't know for sure. Regardless, his version has merit and stands on its own, and certainly entertains. I come to terms with it by acknowledging that all six movies are just that - his version, not Tolkien's.

But I too am excited about this actually cause I always want to know what happens in this battle for Erebor in Rhovanion after Smaug's demise and before Bilbo's return journey home. Can't wait see it unveiled in PJ's version of The Hobbit.

I guess no one will read this, but just allow me to leave this here. So I wasn't much of a fan of Tolkien. I didn't even know him until I became a fan of CS Lewis. My cousins told me to watch Lord of the Rings before, but I never finished the first movie: Fellowship of the Ring. And then COVID-19 happened, and I watched a great deal of movies. And lo and behold I am glad I watched LOTR. I wanted to slap my younger self because I didn't appreciate the ART and MAGIC of LOTR. I loved the movies. It will forever stay in my heart. And then I watched the Hobbit. I was contemplating at first whether I should watch it or not because of the haters. But my Middle-Earth heart made me do it. Sure, it wasn't LOTR. It had its own magic, and its own flaws. But you know what? These movies made me interested to read the books. And now I am starting to read Lord of the Rings. I was quite shocked to read that the story from the Hobbit movies were also taken from the Prologue of the Lord of the Rings book. (This is for those who said that they didn't based the movie from the book). Listen, sometimes movies will not include a full depth of the books. We just have to deal with the limitations. So what's my point? My point is let's enjoy these movies that allowed us to appreciate Middle Earth more. It may not be perfect, but I would be lying if I said that it didn't touch my heart. It did, and it will always do. Stories of friendship, camaraderie, sacrifice, hope, family, adventure and love will always be what LOTR and the Hobbit will remind me of. And I will forever treasure these beautiful memories and lessons in my heart. I hope you do too.

Why are people complaining about the CGI?! The Return of the King had a shitload of CGI. I really don't get this whole notion of CGI being a bad thing. You don't appear to have looked into this very well Ian, the complaint lies with the CGI looking obviously fake. In ROTK it looks real to the extent that often you can't tell that computers created it all, but here in these Hobbit films, they're so fake looking, and not immersive as a result.

I too have no problem with CGI. I cannot understand why folks complain about it (outside of Anime shows) but it me it's a step up from thousands of dollars of props being made to look make and animate a mythical/fictional life form. Maybe they're expectations are too high since they can tell a computer was used but in the end of the day/week/month/year, so many folks just watched it to see it til the end. With that said, I can't wait til its out. I wanna see how this will play out. PS: I've done this play before back in grade school and I find this twist of character casting intriguing.

I hate people who complain about movies not being like the books they were made after to be to busy nerd raging to understand how movies are made. Jackson said originally NONE of the movies would be exactly like the books because it would be impossible to fit it into a movie unless you want to a billion movies. Which I wouldn't mind but to the normal movie goer they don't want to see The Hobbit: Part 23. BTW I am a massive LOTR/Hobbit fan. So I accept that almost all movies based on books (or anything else) aren't often accurate. Just like many don't like that Transformers (for example) aren't like the series. I don't mind. They are meant to be brainless action flicks. I'm just glad to see Transformers on a big screen no matter the changes or how cheesy the story is. Which is why I say some things in summary: 1. If you don't like it, don' see it. 2. Unless you can make a better version of it then be grateful it even became a film.

No one is complaining that he's not making dozens of movies. They're actually complaining about the opposite. A 300 page book was turned into a LOTR-length trilogy. That's why most of the stuff in the movies was never even mentioned in the book; it was all added to increase the length into a trilogy. That said, this looks epic, even if it's nothing like the book.

people don't like these movies because they think not enough work went into making them compared to the first trilogy, the reason behind that is because a lot of people nowadays have a very short attention span so if they took an extra year to make each movie they'd lose a decent amount of the audience which is really unfortunate. But then again if you look at these movies without comparing them to the lotr trilogy they really are fantastic movies even with all the cgi, you guys don't all have to hate on these movies, appreciate them and enjoy them, they're there for your entertainment.

"These bats are bred for one purpose..." - this line made my heart sink. As I remember, there was a line in the LOTR movies about the Uruk Hai being "bred for one purpose". Feels like this dialogue was just recycled. I bought the first two Hobbit movies on BluRay and I'll be buying this one too to complete the set, but they'll be gathering quite a bit of dust in the years to come. Jackson's LOTR films were a work of art and passion. The Hobbit trilogy is a work of box office profit.

don't make the movies worse than they are by comparing them to another trilogy you obviously loved. ... at least, not in *every* way. honestly, if he'd said that line in any other paraphrased way, we ALL would have thought of the LOTR line anyway, and they knew that too, so they decided to fuck it and put the line in (rather than rewrite it for no good reason or avoid the scene altogether because, apparently, it's better off being seen).

JRR Tolkien is brilliant for writing these stories. Peter Jackson is magnificent for bringing his writings to life. Think of it as Man and Hobbit told their story of middle earth with LOTR and Dwarves and Bilbo told theirs with The Hobbit, and Elves telling theirs with Rings of Power. It’s all coming together. Once Rings of Power completely finishes. Im binge watching the entire story nonstop.

I love how people are complaining about these movies because they're using "too much CGI" like get over yourselves it's 2014, CGI has developed so much over the years that filmmakers are only going to be using it more. "oh well lotr didn't use that much CGI" well tough shit, CGI is going to be the future of the film industry as it continues to develop. I for one love LOTR & I love these movies, yeah some things might be a little different from the book but they're still a lot of fun to watch. I'm glad someone else gets it. People always say that LOTR didn't use as much CGI. The reason is is that because the technology didn't exist 10 years ago. Jackson even said he would've made LOTR like he's made The Hobbit if he could've.

Exactly!! People complain about the CGI & how these movies "aren't LOTR" & "it doesn't follow the book" but here's the thing The Hobbit was a childrens book while the lord of the rings was pointed to the ages of 13+ so in my opinion if PJ would've stuck to the type of childish type of tone the book was then it probably would've been boring. I love what PJ is doing to these films & people don't give him enough credit for it. Instead they want to bitch & complain & have the audacity to compare these movies to the Star Wars prequels!!

***** CGI has been overly used in a lot of other movies other than The Hobbit, look at films such as Gravity, Star Trek Into Darkness, Interstellar, Life of Pi, the list goes on & on. Peter Jackson never fell into any trap, it's like what Robert Meadows said, Jackson would've used as much CGI for LOTR as he did for The Hobbit but it wasn't as developed 10 years ago as it is now. Those orcs are CGI because i think Jackson wants to show us like FRESH orcs, ones we have never seen before. Orcs that aren't lotr orcs you know, I mean I don't have a problem with them I think Azog & Bolg look cool, ruthless, & inhuman! That's the vision he wanted us to see for these new CGI orcs i think :)

Plus LOTR used loads of CGI for its time. Peter Jackson has taken these years to improve on visual effects used in films, and it's just the way art progresses. People who crap on CGI will in some years start missing today's CGI and find something else to crap on anyway.

I love how this film tied into The Fellowship - Legolas going to meet Aragorn at the end, Bilbo and the ring, Bilbo’s adventures, Saruman “taking care of Sauron”(great job there buddy). I loved this trilogy! Can’t really top the original trilogy, but I still loved watching them.

There's a psychological phenomenon that occures when something gets to be so popular, the next step is to hate it. Like many social sciences, they're not exact. However, the likely reason for this is because people don't like feeling that they're just part of the crowd. So a person may like something like a movie, book, song, etc. Then more people start to like it. Eventually the thing gets so popular the person who originally liked it convinces them self (subconsciously) that they hate it because they want to feel that they're more of an independent thinker. This often coincides with a cognitive biased where whenever a person is convinced of one thing, they dismiss any evidence that challenges their opinion and only excepts what supports it.

Sorry, I don't think your theory is right. The reason people turn to hate popular things is because their expectations become higher and rarely can a person(s) continually achieve top quality in their field repeatedly and successively. As a result, when content that is less than best (though perhaps still good) is presented people become angry because they invested much more potential happiness or joy in the person(s) work. In reality, we shouldn't expect every movie based the Tolkien novels by Peter Jackson to be of historical proportions. But we do because he exploded our expectations previously. We also won't accept anything less than exceptional because The Hobbit is one of the greats among literature. Besides this, I still enjoy the Hobbit series so far and look forward to the release of this next one. Cheers! (As Jackson might say)

WildwoodClaire1 as a life long Tolkienian I harbour no grudges against any of the movies, as overblown and deviating-from-the-books as they may be. But, nothing beats the books.

David Eriol Hickman Seems to be the case most of the time. I've yet to read any of Tolkien's books, to be honest. I keep re-reading Lovecraft's stories as well as Stephen King's books (which my mom let slip that she bought me one for Christmas!), but I'll probably get to it soon enough, I might just buy the complete set early next year, with a lot of hot cocoa mix with marshmallows.

This is honestly my favorite of the Hobbit movies. Until this past weekend’s Lord Of The Rings rerelease it was the only Middle-Earth movie I saw in a theater.
