Will forever love the moment Bard calms his son who is obviously terrified. Such a tender moment that really shows their father/son relationship. Like even in the heat of battle and all that chaos he is still a parent. Say what you will with regards to the movies but the changes they did with Bards character were brilliant. He went from a gruff, kind of moody side character who just kills Smaug to an actual character with motivation. He's a family man, and the imagery of him killing the Dragon with an arrow shot from his son's shoulders shows this off so well. It's such a short scene but one of my favorites.

Completely agree. This scene actually puts a lump in my throat every time i watch it. You mean Wyvern? Because Wyverns only have two legs and wings acting like the front legs.
@markcobuzzi8267 жыл бұрын
+Peli Sotilas Not all fantasy/mythological reptiles necessarily need to have four distinct legs, one head, purely reptilian features, bat wings, and fire breath to be called a Dragon. Fafnir from the Norse Tales does not usually have wings and breaths poisonous fumes instead of fire. Chinese dragons were large serpent-like creatures with mammalian traits, that had god-like powers and flew by controlling the wind around them and using it to carry themselves aloft. Ladon of Greek Mythology has over 100 heads and sometimes no legs at all. And then there's all the ancient sea dragons that came before the popular image of a Western Medieval dragon. Even then, I heard some of Middle Ages men made no distinction between Wyverns and Dragons, so depending on the mythos, a Wyvern can be an actual type of dragon (like drakes and wyrms) or merely an unrelated dragon-like creature.

That wasn't Smaug's only weakness. His other weakness was his having a big mouth and being so smug, self-obsessed and arrogant that he felt like no one could kill him and that no mere human would be a match for him. As others have pointed out, he still could have killed both Bard and his son if he hadn't spent so much time talking and if he weren't so in love with the sound of his own voice and if he knew when to shut the hell up.

What makes me mad is how Bard managed to make a ballista out of two pieces of wood that he jammed into the wooden pillars with his bare hands. Not only did he manage to stick them there, not only did it hold an improvised bowstring, it was strong enough to shoot a steel arrow into a jet-sized dragon and kill him. Bard got some mad woodworking skills.

Bard used the last of the black arrow to avenge his father, Lord Girion's failure. It was his destiny to kill Smaug, everyone thought Girion failed when he managed to only pierce the dragon's scale, but Smaug wasn't supposed to die then, the mountain had to fall. Thorin's grandfather Thrór, had to reap the result of his limitless pride and boundless greed for gold- fate had to run its course. Thorin thought his destiny was to reclaim the mountain and its riches, but it was really to save middle earth. Like every one of us, he didn't believe in himself, his destiny, he couldn't see why they kept going through everything, at every turn, another door opened when all seemed closed. He didn't see the grand design, even Gandalf didn't know why he wanted to help Thorin. In the end, Thorin realizes that Bilbo was the most important of them all, despite his little stature. This Tolkien was a genius storyteller, there's a message he wanted to deliver.

Dragons in Middle Earth had a lot of power with their words like Saruman, and could cast spells with their gaze. Glaurung, the original dragon, was very snake-like, and his words were literally poison and filled people with despair and doubt. Smaug probably inherited this power in some way. Honestly, even though they will never top The Lord of the Rings trilogy in my opinion, I still love The Hobbit trilogy. I know that these movies made drastic changes from the book, but I don't care. As Bob Chipman, A.K.A. Moviebob once said, "Any adaptation of anything has to balance fidelity and affection for the source material, with what's creatively right for the adaptation itself." And with The Hobbit, Jackson sought to take a children's adventure book, and turn it into an epic adventure-fantasy movie that would also feel like it belonged in the same universe as The Lord of the Rings. And he succeeded in my opinion. Every now and then I'll marathon all six films in the Middle-Earth saga, and it won't feel weird switching from The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings. But that's just my opinion.
