Benedict Cumberbatch said he wanted to play Smaug more than anyone because he grew up on The Hobbit. But he was given even more by Peter Jackson when he asked Ben to also voice Sauron The Necromancer. Also Benedict made the absolute right call (and yes it was his idea not Peter Jackson’s) to play Smaug not just with his voice, but with performance capture. His body and facial expressions gave so much life to Smaug and made him so much more terrifying.

Thorin, born in T.A. 2746, was 195 years old at the time and the oldest of the Dwarves in the Company. In the movies his age has been changed and he is portrayed as a fairly young looking Dwarf. The fact that he is present at the Sacking of Erebor means he must be at least 171 years old (+ his age at the time of the sacking) in the movies. Balin, born in T.A. 2763, was 178 years old and the eldest of the Dwarves after Thorin. In the movies he is portrayed as an old Dwarf, very likely older than Thorin. He must also be slightly older than in the book where he is 7 years old at the time of the Sacking of Erebor. Dwalin, born in T.A. 2772, was 169 years old at the time. Óin, born in T.A. 2774, was 167 years old at the time. Glóin, born in T.A. 2783, was 158 years old at the time. Fíli, born in T.A. 2859, was 82 years old at the time. Kíli, born in T.A. 2864, was 77 years old at the time. The age of Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori and Ori has been left unknown. However, we know that Balin was the eldest of the Dwarves after Thorin and that Fíli and Kíli were the youngest “by some fifty years”. This would put their age between 132 and 178 years at the time of the quest. Bilbo Baggins, born on 22 September T.A. 2890, was 50 years when they set out on the quest but turned 51 before they reached the Lonely Mountain. 21:44 I think it was trying to convey Bilbo's horror at the unwarranted ferocity with which he killed a creature that was at that point doing him no harm. Whether he realises that it was the influence of the ring in this moment is unlikely, especially as we know he kept the ring long into his future.

Kili and Fili are the nephews of Thorin. "Sister-sons"; meaning the sons of Thorin's sister. Gandalf chose a hobbit because hobbits have a special ability - they can go unseen by "big folk" if they choose to. In the book of the hobbit, tolkien expressly says that hobbits still exist but we cant see them because they choose not to be seen. That applies to all hobbits, which is partly why frodo, sam, pip and merry, are not seen by others in various situations. Basically, hobbits are very hard to see if they dont want to be seen. So Gandalf wanted a hobbit, but he chose Bilbo because Bilbo's mother was from the Took family (like Pippin) and the Took family were famous for their boldness, courage, size (among hobbits), and their sense of adventure. Gandalf had kept an eye on bilbo from the time bilbo was a small boy. And yes Aragorn is alive during this story. But he is up north of the shire fighting the orcs and the servants of the wizard king of angmar, who have destroyed his father's kingdom of Arnor - Isildur was never the king of Gondor; he was the king of Arnor, north of the Shire. Isildur's brother was the king of Gondor and when the last descendant of Isildur's brother disappeared in the morgul vale while fighting the witch king for minas ithil/morgul, the line of the king's of Gondor ended and Isildur's heirs became the heirs to the throne of Gondor. That's why everyone believes the line of kings of Gondor is broken - Aragorn remained hidden (even to himself, since he wasnt initially told who he was - that bit is straight out of the legend of King Arthur). Aragorn also fought for Gondor as a young man and fought alongside Theoden's grandfather in Rohan, each time under an alias and staying unknown. Aragorn knew who Frodo was because he had been secretly watching over the shire and defending its borders from the evil to the north - alongside Elrond's two sons and with Gandalf's help - for a very long time. Aragorn lives something like 350 years or so. There are lots of easter eggs in these movies: 1 the trolls frozen into stone - in the fellowship, after Frodo is stabbed you see them, where Arwen arrives. In the extended version, Sam points out "mr bilbo's trolls" to frodo. 2 Balin - Lord of Moria. In the tomb in the room in Moria, where frodo is stabbed by the cave troll (there are several others of Thorin's companions in that room but only Balin, son of Frundig, is named there). 3 Gimli, son of Gloin. Im pretty sure you see Gloin again at the council of Elrond, next to Gimli. 4 Bilbo names "sting" - the sword he hands on to Frodo in the fellowship. - and a few others that would be spoilers if I mention them now.

The White Gems of Lasgalen (of pure starlight) were crafted by the Dwarves of Erebor for the Elven-queen of Mirkwood (Thranduil's wife, Legolas' mother), but she died in Gundabad before she could wear them. Thranduil later tried to reclaim the gems, but a dispute over payment led the Dwarves to refuse, breaking their alliance with him. Thus, the gems have significant personal and cultural importance to Thranduil. By the way, he was portrayed by Lee Pace who does a phenomenal job (as always). Another movie of his that I would highly recommend is The Fall (2006) which is pure feast for the eyes. Lee's performance in The Fall made Peter Jackson consider him in the role of King Thranduil.

If you go by J.R.R. Tolkien's work, Aragorn is 10 years old and living in Imladris (Rivendell) with his mother at the time of this part of the story. According to Peter Jackson's rendition of Tolkien's work Aragorn is 27. Legolas would be 2,854 at this time in the story according to J.R.R. Tolkien. Peter Jackson omitted 17 years from Tolkien's original story in Lord of the Rings, which explains the discrepancy. Elves can be killed, or die from injuries, but otherwise elves are immune to disease and immortal. Galadriel is the oldest elf in Peter Jackson's movies. At the time of the Hobbit story Galadriel was 7,707 years old.

Honestly the first time I saw the barrell scene I hated it, just seemed so cartoony and silly compared to the gritty action of lotr. I was also prejudiced cos pretty sure that scene wasn't in the book. But seeing you two love it made me appreciate it more.

Bilbo's sword was designed specifically by the Elves for killing spiders. Sting is a perfect name.

56:56 while the dwarves play tetris, Gandalf plays chess. Behind the scenes Gandalf arranges the pieces around the board so they are better prepared when darkness arises.

It took a couple viewings to get the other dwarves characters names. It maybe one of the most challenging parts of the film adaptation. Fili and Kiki are mentioned as brothers when they get it Bilbos place. I don’t recall if they mention of being Thorin’s nephews until this one. As children to one of Thorin’s sisters they would inherit the crown. Now I assume this is because there are no one male heirs and if it’s like British tradition it would pass down the next males unless Thorin had a son. The barrel fight maybe one of my favorite fights in Cinemax. It was so creative with humor and suspense while making it unique at the same time.

Being someone who’s read everything from this universe, Peter Jackson really did accomplish the impossible with these films. He really did capture lightning in a bottle with these stories, in the format of film, and they used every film technique in the book to accomplish this. I think it’s important to remember also not to get frustrated at people who have not read the books, to think that they could possibly understand everything in these films is not reasonable. I mean Sauron alone had about nine different names in the books, names that mean different things for different reasons. I thoroughly enjoy watching people enjoy these films for what they are, regardless of what level of knowledge they bring to this universe.

Before Smaug, the dragon VERMITHRAX was the scariest looking dragon in cinema

If Dragonslayer was made now Vermithrax Pejorative would be the scariest, the Dragon in Reign of Fire is also worthy of a mention

14:30 Didn't they spend almost a whole half an hour last movie going through their traits and names when they arrived at his Hobbit Hole? I could barely remember 3 of their names but they did say every last one of their names in order.

So the reason you see Thranduil face turn is in fact is real face covered by elvin magic. He was one of the first elves to reach middle after their civil war in the undying lands call the Kin Slaying. Most of the elves were forced to leave the west and go east to middle earth and settle. Thranduil was left scared in the First Age after a major war with orcs, dragons and other foul dark creatures of the North Middle Earth where he and his kin of elves took up settlement.

While I am glad that the hobbit movies show us more of the dwarfs and the Greenwood elves (aka Mirkwood elves, aka Woodland elves), one needs to know more about the lore to fully understand them and their behaviour. In the intro to the Fellowship of the rings one could see a battle of the war of the last alliance (men and elves resisting Sauron and marching against Mordor). What was not shown was that Greenwood elves under king Oropher (Thranduil's father, Legolas' grandfather) were participating as well in that battle. To make it short, they did not really want to fight under the elven High King Gil-Galad, so they charged before the rest of the armies, were cut off and then utterly destroyed in the marshes near Mordor. Those marshes were filled with thousands of bodies and later became known as the "dead marshes". At the time of the ring wars Gollum lead Frodo and Sam through the dead marshes, where they could still see those dead bodies from 3000 years ago. The aftermath of this disaster was that the Greenwood elves under now king Thranduil did not want to participate in any war anymore. And whenever they were threatened in their realm, they would rather evade/move than fight. This explains to some degree why Thranduil would not help the dwarfs when they were attacked and risk the wrath of Smaug, this explains also to some degree why we haven't seen any Greenwood elves in the LOTR movies besides the representatives at the secret counsel in Rivendell and Legolas ofc.

In the lore of lotr Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron, and the Balrog(s) all belong to a caste of what are essentially lower tier angels called Miar. Sauron and the Balrog(s) were the first Dark lord's chief lieutenants of which Sauron was the greatest. Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, and the two blue wizards are sent to Middle Earth to work against Sauron in the early years of the third age (which begins after the opening battle of the first lotr film). However, the wizards are not supposed to unveil their full power to directly interfere with the affairs of Middle Earth, rather they are primarily there to advise and organize the free peoples against Sauron. This is also why the wizards take the forms of old men despite their spirit's being immortal, they took these appearances as a way to appear wise and trustworthy to the people they were meant to guide, without seeming threatening or overly powerful. In fact, very few individuals are actually aware of the true nature of the Wizards, essentially only the members of the White Council knew (Galadriel, Elrond, Cirdan the Shipwright). Going back to their true power, the battle with the Balrog is one of the few times we see "Gandalf the Grey uncloaked" the wizards would be able to kill almost every being in Middle Earth in single combat with relative ease save for the other Miar, a select few elves still present from the first age, and possibly the unnamed things such as The Watcher in The Water ((squid monster from FOTR) such little is known about them just wanted to mention it). Dragons would also likely be a difficult task, but there's enough examples of them being killed or mortally wounded by elves, men, and dwarves that you can probably make the presumption that Gandalf could kill one given the right circumstances.

Don’t recall how old Legolas is in LOTR, but Arwen is around 2800 years old when she married Aragorn. He was around 80 at the time of the marriage. So he’d be in his 20’s at this point in time I think.
