This is The Hollies...their song, their sound...their personality. A band this good in their own right didn't need to imitate anyone. Beatles were Beatles & Hollies were Hollies. It's all good!

This is truly one of the greatest bands from the 60's. The number of hits that they had rivals any group, Beatles included, from that era. Allan Clarke had a beautiful voice, Tony Hicks a terrific guitarist and Bobby Elliot was a very underrated, albeit great, drummer. How they are not in the RRHOF is a mystery and travesty.

Allan's voice defined the Hollies' sound totally. His 'shyness' is his charm. Great voice and stunning good looks...the whole package!

It's amazing: Tony Hicks still looks about 20 years younger than he is, and I understand that he continues to perform.

I love Tony Hicks in this video. He looks exactly like a British street kid from a Dickens' novel. Terry looks like my first grade teacher Mrs. Riley.

Just sitting around on the computer today and decided to listen to this live version of a great Hollies hit. I am 58 and remember that it was 1968 when Graham Nash left the group and Terry Sylvester replaced him. You will see the Hollies dress differently at times but their image was what made them unique. This was a terrific group that has not gotten credit for what they accomplished. For the Face79, they were in their heyday when this song came out, hit after hit after hit.

Why would anyone need to compare The Hollie-or any other band of the era-with The Beatles? For me they were great on their own merits. I enjoy all bands of that age and I don't need to go about 'comparing' them. To what purpose? It's not a popularity contest. It's music. Just enjoy it.

The song was recorded with Graham Nash doing the high bits, but this was performed after Nash had left the band, as Terry Sylvester his replacement is singing. Also Tony Hicks and Terry Sylvester share the Graham Nash vocals.

I was at my bank today and the tellers name was Carrie Anne. Knowing and loving the song/Hollies, I mentioned it to her. She blasted me on how the song was so offensive to her. I was totally taken back. I told her that I don't think the song was written as a personal attack on her. Then, I got the hell out of there. Wow, talk about sensitive.

One of the best music videos on here imho of a terrific group performing a cool song live with orchestral accompaniment. The different camera angles, zoom-ins and focus on each of the band members, all in classic b&w, far superior to anything much music or mtv produced, afterall there's no replacement for talent, 3 excellent vocalists, great sounding drums, doesn't get much better then this

As I watched this video again today, I can't help but yearn for those days that the Hollies made terrific music. The harmony is matched only by the Beatles in that era. The video is a joy to watch and I thank whomever posted it. Thank you and thanks to the Hollies.

When I was growing up in Ontario,Canada in the 60's there were so many hometown groups that were so good! They would play at our high school dances, in the church halls around the city. There was always some new band to check out. The fun was that they not much older than we were! (16-19) Anyways, Tony Hicks looks like he is 16! Love the hair! It is all coming back in style though!

I was just talking to someone who knows Tony and Bobby, and he confirmed it was written for Marianne. It started out as a song Tony was writing based on "Mr. Tambourine Man," but Tony only got as far as the first line, then turned it over to Graham, who changed the lyrics to, "Hey, Carrie-Anne." Allan wrote the middle part, "So like a woman to me." Graham based the line on "older boys and prefects" on Marianne's relationship with members of the Rolling Stones, who were prefects in school.

Graham Nash said in radio interview a feqw years back that the song was written for Marianne. They toured with her in 1964-65, and he said they liked her and wrote the song for her. They changed the title to Carrie-Anne because they didn't want it to be too obvious that the song was written about Marianne. Song lyrics don't have to be word-for-word based on real-life events. They didn't have to have gone to the same school as Marianne to have written a song about her ... end of!

Graham Nash was still with The Hollies when this song was recorded in '67. Terry Sylvester (formerly of The Swingin' Blue-Jeans) joined the Hollies after Graham Nash's departure. While The Hollies were doing this version in '69, Nash was then performing with former ByRDS veteran David Crosby, and former Buffalo Springfield lead voclaist Stephen Stills (as Crosby, Stills, & Nash). Overall, this is one of my favorite songs. :)

On March 15, 2010, the Hollies will be inducted finally into the RRHOF. My best friend and his wife are attending the ceremony and he told me that this will be more exciting than seeing the Beatles in Detroit in 1966 at the old Olympia. This group had so many hits and should have been received better in the US than they were. Still, one great song after another.
