23:34 Best line in this whole series. I love the implication that in their entire life together not once has Stolas ever seen Stella so much as glance at a book, let alone read one. So it makes sense that someone as mean and nasty as her would possibly be illiterate. Books and words bring him joy, she brings him nothing but misery. So the idea of these two things intersecting never crossed his mind lol
@VaryaTheVillain3 ай бұрын
54:02 copying here from discord: personally, I think that "met as children" trope works here BECAUSE it's a trope. because Stolas is nothing if not a consumer of romance through warped perspectives, who had seen that exact trope and THAT is why he reacts to Blitzø with "oh, have you come to RAVISH me?~" he's got experience with romance ONLY through various media, because *obviously* Stella didn't show him an ounce of that. so he's the one pursuing the relationship from that angle, remembering that ounce of freedom and happiness with an imp child like one of his lifelines. Blitzø, meanwhile, due to social disparity and more active (disastrous) love and sex life, doesn't even look at the trope. he played into the role of Stolas' childhood dream lover for the book *and* out of pity, slowly falling into some sort of feelings that we don't have an explicit label on. I wouldn't call it a subversion of the trope, but it's close in some ways.
@DUWANGlai_kangyi3 ай бұрын
I actually agree, especially because when you keep in mind how it probably felt on Blitzø's side... Being literally "bought" for a day, forced to put himself in danger and at odds with people who have all the power over him and his kin... Yes, it makes sense to me the trope would be used to show just how bad the issue of Stolas romanticizing these troped themselves can get. Just how blind he can be due to his own privilege and social ineptitude born from trauma and loneliness.
@cazminah2 ай бұрын
this is a really good point, I hadn’t considered linking the childhood friends-to-lovers trope with stolas’s warped ideas of romance. it’s interesting how blitzø plays into that without fully understanding it, like he fucks stolas out of pity / guilt when he first steals the book and continues to satisfy stolas sexually as part of their arrangement, but he explicitly sets boundaries against romance at the end of Ozzie’s and doesn’t seem to realise that’s what’s stolas craves
@cherie28613 ай бұрын
1:42:10 oh yeah, stolas' problem with listening to others and being not self-aware is 100% consistent. it's his overall problem, he is constantly in his head, his needs and his feelings, because throughout his life his feelings were neglected, and he constantly don't pay attention how his words and actions might affect others, and especially blitz and octavia.
@dustyoldrowe3 ай бұрын
Blitz needs to call him out on that, because he's 100% playing to much the victim when Blitz accuses him of looking down on him, or rather rich folk looking down on the "lesser" folk, cmon Stolas we know Blitz wasn't the greatest but you're not winning yourself any favors there, you have as much blame as him in all this
@cherie28613 ай бұрын
@@dustyoldrowe i would say that it shouldn't be blitz to call him out. simply because blitz uses this excuse to push stolas away in his self-destructive way, and it's not gonna help. i personally think stolas needs to be called out by some unbiased person who could see stolas' behaviour towards people and especially imps. i think this is the only way stolas can be like "oh, wait, blitz was kind of right, i f'ed up".
@hadrianhexe96033 ай бұрын
@dustyoldrowe Stolas played the victim because he was very much so the victim in thier more tense interactions. Yes Stolas does shit, but he does it not realizing it could be considered bad, while Blitz was screaming abuse at him. Stolas' actions didn't warrant the reaction he got, that's why Blitz is being shown in an unfavorable light

One funny thing about human Stolas's design is that they dropped a trailer for the first half of season two that had storyboards paired to music instead of full animation (so no color) with a frame with human Stolas from this episode in it. The fandom then proceeded to spend the time between that trailer and this episode dropping arguing (generally lightheartedly) on if that was actually human Stolas, or it was just meant to be a fakeout to remind Blitz of Stolas because it resembled him. Fun times.

They were crowding him before it went black, now the floor is soaked with blood and they're all dead and he is nowhere in sight. The immediate threat is gone. Another thing that could be very likely is that he doesnt register the human fire as a threat, because it canonically doesn't hurt them? (Episode 1). I don't know if that just extends to imps or all hellborn. But it was stated human fire specifically doesn't hurt them.

@PurpleLugiaАй бұрын
My read on him adopting her (while choosing her for her similar damage to himself that he understands) was that he also feels a severe need for all kinds of love due to how he was emotionally manipulated and neglected as a kid and has a bad romantic history, and adopting a child to take care of and love would fulfill his need for familial love. He smothers Loona not just to make up for the love she clearly never got, but to try (too hard) to maintain a familial bond with her. Skyen's read on Blitz's panic attack being about the idea of failing Loona isn't bad, but alternatively it might have been from the idea of willingly dropping a familial connection, which he was reminded how much he doesn't want to happen.

Moxxie being fat "joke" has been made as a "running joke" since the pilot. It did seem to bother him then. Coming back at some point where he mentions that he lost a few pounds and Loona just ignores it. Loona in general does just say things sometimes (maybe it comes from her own lack of confidence in herself) or at least that is my feeling. Especially when she told Millie "You're pretty agile for an old lady" in episode 6 it made me feel that she just likes to talk smack or banter?
@helenanilsson56663 ай бұрын
Yeah, and I get the impression that Blitz kinda encourages her in that as well when he tags on with the salad comment - and honestly she probably learned that it was safe to bully Moxxie because she saw Blitz argue with him at the office and after she joins in on bullying Moxxie Blitz want to do it even more because that can be their father-daughter activity. It's not healthy parenting behaviour, but it's an understandable psychological shortcut where they're creating a safe (for them, because it doesn't involve actual vulnerability) "us" that is united against something "other" - it's the kind of bonding that schoolyard bullies do.

As good as a lot of the serious emotional moments in this are, this episode frustrates me. On the one hand, it is kind of just. Retreading the ground of Loo-Loo Land but with a focus on Octavia and Loona and no input from Stolas. And on the other hand... "If you're not gonna do anything with Moxxie and Millie, if they're not gonna matter, if they're not gonna be part of the story... eh?" This is how I feel about centering an episode on Octavia. If they end up making her a major character going forward, if she and her feelings here have impact on the plot going forward, then this episode is worth it. If it's just here to show off Stolas's personal problems in another perspective and neither her pain or their resolution at the end are going to matter then what was the point. That said I love love LOVE having them all watch fireworks instead of Stolas using his magic to part the smog and see the the meteor shower (a thing he... absolutely could have done...). It's such a great visual metaphor for how their relationship now isn't as grand and fantastical as it was when Octavia was a kid, it's smaller and grimier and more rooted in the grim limitations of the world, but it's still beautiful and worth experiencing. Also if they were gonna have Moxxie and Millie be a joke scene at the end it should have come after the credits.

Knowing how closely linked Blitz and Loona's damage is to eachother, it makes me want to compare Blitz's doting on Loona to Stolas' miscommunicated appreciation of Blitz (which is a subject that will be touched more upon later in the series). It's this empty validation, while which sounds good on paper, doesn't help and fails to get through to these two who will never see themselves as anything more than broken goods. Blitz needs to find some common ground with Loona (not as a father, but as a friend) to explain how exactly he has faith in her, in the same way that Stolas needs to be more direct with his feelings and desire to advance the relationship (instead of getting whisked away by romantic fantasy). It's so easy for these two to accidentally not consider every angle of how the other is feeling purely because they care so much for them, but due to their positions of power, it changes the dynamic entirely. As a Hellhound, Loona was basically adopted like a dog out of a pound, and because of that experience, she probably expects to be dumped once her "owner" is sick of her. Similarly, Blitz has seen some hard times as an Imp and has had to do plenty of things to get by (such as stealing from the palace back when the two of them were children), so it's hard for him to see past his "purpose" with Stolas (especially when considering the class issue).

1:26:15 Back in January 2021, there was a rumor that Kanye West was hooking up with a KZbin makeup content creator, Jeffree Starr. The rumor ended up being completely false. But for a couple of weeks, there were memes everywhere online with people joking that it was the reason for Kim Kardashian and Kanye's divorce, which had gone public not too long before. This episode came out in Fall of the same year, so I'm fairly positive that's what this is a reference to, lol.

ngl, ive watched this episode a hundred times. always thought the episode was beautiful, i have had my understanding of it and my own analyses. but as you were talking about loona, both in the blitz flashback scene and in the final scene i cried beacuse of how you were talking about it. (i hadn't cried before when i watched). love your analyses of the characters, i binged watched ur helluva boss reactions and i just wanted to praise you for it. love how you talk both about the plotline and the animation, its so entertaining! the more hours the video has, the more fun, lol

I do appreciate the amount of time Skyen takes to talk about the animation techniques and visual story telling. It's so nice to listen to someone going all out about the knowledge they have on a subject (and finding a funny animation smear is just good for giggles). But also, film and animation (BUT ESPECIALLY ANIMATION) details are super intentional. It's rare for shit to be hanging out in the background because "it looks good". Anyway, one animation nerd enjoying the work of another animation nerd here.

Wanna say first off watched this on the discord originally didn't realize the amount of editing that goes into Skyen's model I assumed it was live like a vtuber. Just Great Job Edit: I watched it live on the discord and just assumed I had bad Internet on my end that it was coming in choppy on my end.... also my squirrel brain remembers basically nothing from the reaction besides gushing about the ending scene, laughs at some jokes, and that you loved the stolas drama/lust for blitz in this episode and the fact that they can bond over shared trauma and being dads.. oh and the frame by frame of the sun moving with the wisps of plasma

30:30 NO SPOILERS but this is such a huge problem for Stolas and my biggest issues with his behavior regarding Blitz, he does the exact same thing to him, ignoring body language and dismissing his concerns and physically turning his back on him.... ofc it's easy to sympathize with stolas because we KNOW he has a lot of love in his heart, but he hasn't yet learned the ability to love, to make someone feel loved and decenter himself enough to see the other person communicating verbally and non verbally. but at least blitz hold his own, argue back and advocate for himself, it's heartbreaking to see his daughter just shirk away and try to handle things on her own given that she grew up experiencing that from the person she loves most. this might be the first time she's gotten lost in the human world, but who knows how many other times she had to figure things out on her own because her parents weren't giving her the support she needed.

Not a spoiler, because no episodes related to thing I am talking about is out yet, But recently there was an interview with Viv where she mentioned we will get Stella's perspective or at least get an idea why she is the way she is. But it seems a lot of time will pass before we get to that. Also she compared Stella's shift of role/understandability to Bojack's mother

OK. The average distance between 2 "rocks" in Saturn's rings is between 1 m and 30 cm. Yes, space is vast and you're correct about this in most places. But in select few it is that close.

Man going from that one KZbinr who shall not be named that takes every opportunity to represent Stolas in the worst possible light (sometimes even misrepresenting quotes to support their narrative or just making shit up), to your nuance take on him is so refreshing. The man has problems, but some people act like the show itself doesn’t know this just because a character doesn’t explicitly call him out.

I think because of the scene in spring breakers when she says something along the lines of “i was almost eighteen, I didn’t you then” The euthanasia hypothesis is a bit less likely

I do agree that Stolas has to do better by Octavia, but I don't think that's a choice at this point. In order for him to be there for Octavia he needs to be at ease with himself and he can't do that with Stella screaming in his ear (did you hear the bird???) And there isn't an easy way to explain this to Octavia either. Sure, he can seat her down and explain that her mother is a bitch, but on one hand it can be interpreted as Stolas wanting to cause tension between mother and daughter (which is a dick move) and on the other hand, I don't think Octavia is that open to understanding Stolas either. Cuz she does see how Stella treats Stolas and an adult would probably understand that this is not the time to expect Stolas to remember promises, but she is a teenager. Not saying she's inconsiderate, but at that age you're not experienced enough to realize what problems take priority and just think everything is about you. And I don't even know if Octavia understands her mother's behavior as problematic, cuz all her life she's seen Stella acting this way and Stolas saying it's fine, because he wanted Octavia to have a normal life. It's a shitty situation and I'm not saying Stolas is treating Octavia right, what I'm saying is that that's the only way he could act in this situation, because Stella won't let him be

1:15:00 Someone on the staff thinks gaslighting is funny. That's literally it. "Moxxie isn't fat but wouldn't it be funny if we made him think he was and give him an eating disorder????" It's hella confusing and has never been funny, not that we've gotten to the eating disorder part, he just admits to losing some weight in the pilot or episode two. Can't remember. The only thing that can save this bit is if Moxxie ever turns it back onto Loona by not reacting and revealing it doesn't bother him anymore ever since he realized it's _projection_ on her part.
@gizenzirin83513 ай бұрын
Only about an hour and 17 into the video, but the thing about Loona calling Moxxie fat is both a reference to the pilot when she did the same thing, and I think also just a case of her and Blitz playing on Moxxie's anxieties by specifically gaslighting him about something that's obviously wrong.

When you mentioned foreshadowing at the beginning, it clicked to me that even Stolas’ description of the meteor shower “made of the hopes and dreams of every living thing that never came to be.” Like how seing the meteors was Octavia’s dream and it never came to be either!
