xisumavoid Quite late, but i found some on an excursion with my class to Münster. And some people are just dumb enough to think that Germans should get over it. But the whole WW2, as Doc said, has left such a big scar, that it'll always be rembered no matter what or where in WW2 involved European country's. My grandfather's dad got caught but escaped before he was deported, not for just not fitting in, but for hard labour in a bomb factory.. If he didn't escape which was very likely, I wouldn't have existed, neither were my grandfather and my mother... and that's why if should be remembered to never, ever happen again.

SchiggiOverload I don't know what video you watched, but there is nothing here along those lines. Also keep in mind, USA has 48+ bomb threats to Jewish centers in the last month. That doesn't include graffiti, threatening letters etc. Which is what Doc is trying to point out. This labeling and separating into "us" and "them" devolves quickly into something I know I don't want.

There has actually been a steady increase in neo-nazi and other white supremacist groups in the US and across Europe for over a decade. Organizations that track that kind of activity have been warning about it for years. This is a real threat to all people who are not seen as "part of the main stream" just like Doc said. The details of the threat are not exactly the same as WWII, but they are there. Just because something is worse somewhere does not mean we can ignore oppression or hatred in our own backyards.

A group in the US is trying to do something similar for the victims of lynching. I believe its called the equal justice initiative. Unfortunately there has been resistance to this on the areas where it was most prevalent. Sometimes you just need something tangible to remind you of the ugliness we are capable of.

The more resistance that an American lynching Stolpersteine project runs into, the greater the proof that it is absolutely necessary, especially now that the American Nazis are hellbent on whitewashing history in 2023, as they are so actively banning books and the teaching of history, the epitome of which is the state of Florida passing laws dictating that students be taught that "slavery was beneficial to the enslaved" because them ungrateful slaves were taught "useful skills for free."

I fully understand you Doc, everything you said is real, it was not only Jews, victims were regular folk from not only Germany but from other countries that were conquered by Germany. In Croatia where i come from you can find similar memorials of victims of Italian fascism in our region in that time, almost every village have one with dozen of names on it.

I once was on vacation in croatia (im german) and saw one of those memorials. It was in a very small village with only about 100 citizens, but the memorial had over 200 names on it. That made me think a lot about this dark chapter of our together history, and this memorial is one of the things i remember the most of this vacation.

My late father told me stories about how a friend of his surviving the concentration camps and the anguish he had about all his friend had endured. About 10 years ago, he and my mom took a trip to Germany. I remember his face when he told us of the visits they had made to the sites of the concentration camps. Thank you for making this Doc. It made me miss my father's wisdom and caring a lot, but also comforted me there are people like you making their voices heard.

We have these in Norway as well. The Norwegian government during the occupation willingly cooperated with the occupation forces to register, arrest and deport the Norwegian Jews. Hardly any of them survived at all. Which is a stark and terrible contrast to what the Danish did, when they organized mass escape to Sweden. There were Stolpersteine (snublestein in Norwegian) both in my old neighbourhood and by my former place of employment. Considering that my grandfather was a volunteer for the Norwegian SS I feel this is somewhat personal to me, and I am humbled and awed whenever I see these tiny monuments. They are a good way to remember something gruesome.

I think it's important to note that it was not the elected government that did this, but the "occupation" government that overthrew the elected government, led by Quisling. It was a coup d'etat by norwegian Nazis. (Hi, also a Norwegian! ^^)

Thank you for this video. I'm Norwegian, and what happened during the war is very strong in our peoples memory. There are so many things that could and should be learned from what happened during WW2, and it's something that Norwegians take very seriously. So many people lost their lives fighting against the Nazi regime just inside our own country, and the pain from that is still a wound that has not healed. There is a book about Norwegian jew Herman Sanchowitz, about his experiences from the slave-ship DS Donau, to Auzwich, then the death-march from Buna, where he ended up in a train that took 10 days to Dora. He eventually ended up in Bergen Belsen. The book is called "Det angår også deg" ("It concerns you, too."). That book is one of the strongest pieces of litterature I have ever read, and I will never forget it. It details day-to-day events in the camps, and explains why/how he managed to survive. In the end, it's a book that teaches us that we must never dehumanize another person, and what it entails if we do. If I had to recommend only one book that I thought everyone should read, that would be it. To contribute to what you said at the end of the video, I'd like to share a poem by Arnulf Øverland, written during WW2, about not allowing evil: "Du må ikke sitte trygt i ditt hjem og si: Det er sørgelig, stakkars dem! Du må ikke tåle så inderlig vel den urett som ikke rammer dig selv! Jeg roper med siste pust av min stemme: Du har ikke lov til å gå der og glemme!" ("You mustn't sit safely in your home and say: It's so sad, poor souls! You mustn't so easily stand for the injustice that doesn't afflict youself! I shout with the last breath of my voice: You aren't allowed to sit there and forget") This rhymes, and during the war, it was used as a chant amongst the people, for courage. We still recite it for that purpouse today :)

I'm taking a German history class at my university and one of our final assignments was to find something made by a German citizen in the last few years and contextualize it to help show the change in German identity today. I decided to use this video because it greatly shows the introspective nature that I feel Germans have in understanding what happened and why it happened. I feel that you comment about how it is more than dwelling on the past made me think more deeply about what my own history as a Canadian means to my daily life, something that I had not though about previously. As such I would like to thank you for making this video as it made me think more deeply about myself and my nation's shared history than I had previously.

Dude, I have been enjoying your gaming videos for a long time and just happened to see this on your main page and this was extremely touching to see. I think it's incredible to see a "KZbinr" and a "gamer" (all labels, I know) put forth something so very intelligent and caring and honest and socially relevant. I'm not saying that gaming videos are not intelligent, I'm not saying that at all. I'm just saying this was, for me, really unexpected and really quite lovely. I think also you have a lot of courage, so many of us decline from commenting on any kind of politics because, well, because it can get political very quickly, but i feel that you are standing up for intrinsic human decency which cannot and should not be politicized. I don't know, man, I just wanted to let you know how emotionally touching I really felt this was, and how unexpected and how awesome. I'm just one more little voice chiming in with my support and gratitude for you, sir. Carry on!

Projekt Stolpersteine is such a brilliant concept, one of the very best intersections of art, culture, politics and history that was ever conceived of and beautifully executed. The color grabs the eye and cannot be ignored, unlike the other memorials which can so easily be avoided by those who think that the Nazi era was a "Vogelschiss" that happened once and doesn't matter anymore. The fact that the AfD Trottel hate the Stolpersteine so much is the purest proof that this awareness is so crucial and relevant today.

Partisans like simple boxes--culture in a box, ethnicity in a box, God in a box... It's easy to crumple up and discard any box that becomes "an obstruction." It always seems to me that, eventually, the only boxes partisans like are the boxes they've locked themselves in. It's strange how the small memorials to real human beings are so much simpler than any partisan box, but mean infinitely more. Thank you for making this video, Doc.

Wow! That is a very profound video you made, doc. I just stumbled upon this video by chance, and I'm very glad I did. This has meaning to me. Lately I have been going through some difficulty with friends of mine who no longer want to be my friend because we have different political beliefs. How stupid is that?? I am tired of all the fighting and division. It doesn't matter to me what someone's political beliefs are (or race, gender, religion, etc...). Yes, we are all different in some way. Why do we refuse to get along?? Why am I losing friends because I think differently?? I haven't hurt anyone. I haven't insulted anyone. It's crazy how we are acting towards one another. We see on TV that people are using violence towards other people, and some people are smashing windows, and some people are yelling insults at other people. What do these people think they are accomplishing?? If we don't learn the lesson of "Stolpersteine" we will end up repeating the mistakes of the past.

Well said Doc, and thanks for showing the project. I had no idea this had been done, but it is an amazing way to make people stop and think where this really happened. People tend to think things couldn't have happened in their neighborhoods, so it gives them a sense of distance from tragedy. Having markers at the houses makes one stop and realize that it did happen here and it could happen again if we allow it.

I feel a very deep sympathy for these people that were persecuted simply for being different. I myself have always been very different from those around me and even at one point in my life was persecuted for it in no small way. Almost every genius throughout history faced much the same sort of difference. One has to wonder how many potential Einsteins never got a chance to pursue those curiosities due to the persecution they suffered; what our world would have been like with a whole people of contributions added to the history books.

Of course people in Germany have to find a way to deal with their own history and this I think is a really respectful way to deal with the memories of people who suffered. Things you said and how you said them, this could easily be a BBC documentary. You really should send it to Documentary contests and such. I can see why you did this now, and who you're talking to for the most part. This kind of information is needed these days badly.

I loved all that you said, especially about labeling people, I've always thought the same way. A person can't be defined with just one word, or even with words at all. Love your videos, keep the good work.

A really good video .. I hope this video gets a lot of views, and that it is spread all over the internet so that many may see it and maybe think before they spread hatred against someone or start to argue in a discussion with a "we against them "methods.
