Why can I not find this famous Hymn "The Holy City" in my five hymnals? Very strange that a beautiful hymn like this would be so hard to find.

Not a better interpretation have I heard than this -- you played with great feeling -- using perfect tempo/dynamic changes/contrasts and of course legitimate use of tremulant! -- WOW! all so very majestic! Thank you for posting.

Thanks, so much Mark....(had a bit of trouble with the 3rd verse...following the chimes measure)...but decided that it could be worse if I did it over...LOL

One of my personal favorites. Nicely executed with good registration and at a perfect tempo! I take full advantage of poco a poco at “ and once again the scene was changed “ and pp. It was dreamy hearing the chimes at that point. Thanks for sharing this!

Absolutely beautifully played and at the perfect tempo. So many play this piece much too fast and do not give it the glorious and majestic quality it deserves. Bravo to you and thank you for sharing your beautiful talent. This was just wonderful.

Brought chills to my spine!! You have rendered it wonderfully my good man! I love the usage of presumably the 8 foot Trumpet in between the verses and the chorus line. I have been playing this great Christmas carol / hymn on my Victorian organ in my church since I was six. I have been playing it since then. I am 15 now and still it has the same importance to me as it did back then. I sing it too as I am an operatic baritone and so sadly can't reach the high notes that the great Richard Crooks did but hey ho! Being able to play it is one thing and singing it in one's own style is great too. Anyway, you have rendered it beautifully. You have done great justice to it and I am sure there isn't one person who is unimpressed by it! Please tell me whether you have used a 16 foot Ophicleide because for some reason, I believe I can hear it. Thank you!!

Thanks for your kind remarks, Shiv K P....Glad that you also play (and sing) this wonderful oldie!!...nope, no 16' Ophicleide used...possibly sounds like it because it's not a real good recording....( however in the louder sections there were several 16' reeds in the pedal.... actually several 32' reeds also)...you've got a good sense of stop recognition...Blessings to you for a wonderful life...please keep playing and singing....(beautiful gifts from our gracious God!!!)

Thank you for your kind words too sir! I must have been mistaken then but nevermind. It must be nice to be able to have that much of a range with even 32 foot reeds. I certainly will carry on singing and playing the organ as it is my passion. Thank you once again!

I agree with you! It really is the most beautiful version here on KZbin, played on a wonderful instrument and it is an expression of the great experience of the organist.I especially loved the third verse where the dreamy mood was created by the chimes. I greet you and wish you all the best.

I play the piano completely by ear and I have been trying for years to play this song. I regretted my entire life that I didn’t continue lessons as a kid and I have been trying to teach myself but haven’t had much luck lately.😢 You played this so beautifully. Absolutely love this song.

I definitely have been looking into but sadly I have been on medical disability and don’t really have the extra funds. I’ve been trying different tutorials and apps and surprisingly they are helpful to a degree. The funny thing is that if I don’t know the song and I have to depend solely on following along the music, it feels extremely foreign to me because my ears can’t take over.😊 I’ve been without music for so long that it’s like studying a foreign language.

Never give up hope. I sang opera for years then lost my ability to sing completely. I focused on learning piano again and began teaching myself again. It's never too late. I too needed and wanted to learn this piece. I'm 46 still learning. Also try it in Bb. The ear is better in that key. But, yes if you're not reading the music you're missing out on great writing. YOU CAN DO IT.

*Some very colorful registration here. On the organ, this piece tends to be very melodic but unfortunately unless the transcription is well done it fails to capture the sense of rhythm found in the original piano-vocal composition.*
