I'm surprised my guess was actually correct. This ball looked pretty good back in the late 90s on dry conditions. Back then I bowled in an old 8 lane wood house with that soft guardian overlay on the front half of the lane. One of my team mates had a Quantum Helix. He threw what was only the second 300 in the houses 40+ year existence with it. In his excitement he jumped up and cut his hand on a light fixture and bled on the approach. Since he also happened to be the manager, the mechanic, the front desk man, and the janitor he had to cut his celebration short and clean up the lane. ABC, now USBC, banned the technology so only two versions were made.
@jvmiller19952 жыл бұрын
That sounds like my luck. I use to work the front desk at ours years ago. I had a key and would come in early and oil the lanes then throw a few games. Then I would roll a few games and relax before I opened at 6 pm. One day I was just having a good time and I rolled 2 games both was in the 240's. It was like 5 min tell 6 pm and a long line at the door. I said nope they are going have to wait. I had never rolled a 700 prior to this series. I ended up bowling and was about 10 or 15 min late to open for everyone else, but I bowled a 719. My very first 700 ever. I was even nice and kept the place open a hour late that night because the Fri night crowed was having fun, But it sure sucks to have to cut it short when you are bowling good. I still have not got my 300 game yet but I had several 700's this year and I did get my first 298 a month or 2 back.

I remember talking with a rep about the Helix and he remarked that a better concept might be to swap the urethane and reactive locations of the ball meaning come off your hand and progress through the majority of the flaring process on urethane then finish from the break point through the pins on a reactive "ring". Of course the difficulty of trying to predict where a variety of bowlers tracks are going to end up rather than where they start out was a problem. I also recall watching staffers use the Helix where the urethane ring was wobbling right off their hand. Rather than the ball not being laid out/drilled exactly correct I speculated that they might be starting the ball on the edge of the stripe right off the hand in an attempt to closer emulate a typical reactive look.

There was a Brunswick ball made in about 1990-91 called the Phantom that had an extra pin. There were 3 different Phantoms... Black, Blue and Maroon (Burgundy?). The black and blue Phantom's had a weight block that looked like a flying saucer. The Maroon Phantom was some goofy 3 piece ball with a very light center and all the weight in the shell. The Blue Phantom had a heavier weight block and hooked more than the Black Phantom. The Maroon Phantom was supposed to be like a Pink Hammer (little to no hook). The Black and Blue Phantoms reacted very differently depending on which of the 4 layouts you chose for the ball, much more so than other balls... but it was very important to know your PAP to layout the ball correctly and a lot of people never got theirs drilled properly. I used drilling layout #1 with the Black Phantom and it was the most skip-flip ball I've ever seen. They never became really popular, in part because they came out just as the first resin balls arrived in 1991. The Nu-Line Excalibur (first resin ball) was made by a guy from California in his garage. The resin got so hot that it kept melting his molds after like 100-200 (?) balls. He brought a lot of them to the Hoinke Classic tournament in Cincinnati, a 10-month long tournament which was the biggest handicap tournament in the world for several decades and everyone started putting up monstrously high scores with the Excalibur. He couldn't make them fast enough and eventually Colombia (i think) took over manufacturing, but they had less resin than the original Nu-Line balls and hooked a little less, but still more than Urethane. That was the start of the resin era. It's funny now that urethane has made a big comeback and become popular again... especially with 2-handers and very high rev-rate bowlers.

I had both this one and the Double Helix (blue with a red stripe, and the stripe "shape" was different around the ball). Two of the most frustrating balls I've ever owned. I actually liked the original better because it got really good on dry lanes. As others have said, see if you can Haus it down to where it doesn't thump. Of course, you know what that means -- you'd be decreasing the circumference of the ball a little and that lessens performance. Having said that, I will pay you to throw this in an actual PBA event just for the reaction video it would generate.
