Reading some negative comments about the weight hole ban. Let me explain some more. USBC did a study and discovered the static weights on the ball don't really affect ball motion as much as everyone thought. What they did find out the differential matters more than static weight. When a thumb in bowler drills a 1-1/2" interchangeable thumb hole, they remove quite a bit of the heavy core mass. If they then drill another 1" weight hole, they can remove more core mass. Look up Mo's double thumb layout, this layout effectively raised the differential of the drilled ball significantly. For the next episode of illegal bowling balls, I'd like to see Packy drill a double thumb layout. See the before and after the "thumb" and weight hole is drilled. If memory serves me correctly, a no thumb bowler was allowed to drill the thumb hole and balance hole if they could prove they could grip the ball with thumb hole, now there are rules against it.

You want something illegal....take a pancake block ball, drill the finger holes really deep and load up the ball with a lot of coins. Put enough in to make it lope. That is how the guys back in the day use to do it. I saw one guy who had his finger insert come out and coins were rolling all over the lane. The ball will carry the weirdest trash.

Most every ball is not legal ! Check the true diameter. Max legal is still 8.583 anything made in the last 15 years is over that, USBC does not care.As long as they get there $$$ By the way this does not help the bowler on there first ball as the ball hits the pocket. Think about which pins take out which pins and the angles the pins are moving during a pocket hit. The ball that is oversize will cause the bowler to leave more ten pins if you are right handed. Think about it the movement of each pin .

So, weight holes, I believe, were used to move around the mass bias relative to a bowler’s PAP. With a crater that massive and that much closer to your PAP, it shortens the PSA to PAP distance (or creates a smaller 1st angle). This is a much weaker PSA to PAP distance/angle since it makes the core more stable. Additionally, with the shorter distance, it makes the ball roll a lot earlier. If you like those smoother drillings and want to replicate it, you could start laying stuff out with those smaller PSA to PAP angle to get the mass bias closer to your PAP.

@@conniewaldby5524 PSA is the “preferred spin axis” which is basically the mass bias. It’s the point on the ball that marks the place of the intermediate differential and is really only present in asymmetric bowling balls. PAP is the “positive axis point.” Every player rotates the ball around their own unique axis and if you think of the axis as a line, it intersects the bowling ball and two points on the ball’s surface. If you’re a righty, the PAP is the axis point that face towards the left gutter. If you’re a lefty, the PAP is the axis point that face towards the right gutter. Proshop owners use PAPs as the basis for all their measurements because it represents how a bowler is going to orient the core on release. In order to get the bowler to orient the core the way a certain drilling intends, the ball must be drilled based on the PAP.

the angles are relative to your axis rotation and axis tilt, i have low axis tilt and 90 degrees of axis rotation all of my asymmetrical ball are pin down so i can control them

I was a thumb out one hander in the mid 90s 4 balls was really 10. 4 with thumb in 4 with thumb out 2 I would turn ball around and get a weird roll out on the back end. Didn't use that shot much but fun to play around with.

Hole depth was not enough. As Mo used to say, it should be at least 3" deep before you see an appreciable change in performance. Try doing this again, but go with a 4-5" hole.

That’s actually outdated information that storm disproved while doing their research for the 2LS system. The point of diminishing returns for hole depth when the pin is 6.5” from the fingers (or in this case we can use the weight hole being 6.5” from the pin) is somewhere between 3.25 and 3.5 consistently on all their charts. The same physics applies to thumb hole depth and weight hole depth.

​ @Stomping Peak That is the dumbest take ever. The USBC doesn't benefit from people buying balls and there was zero need to replace balls, all you had to do was fill the unused hole. My buddy had it done. He had a 3 finger ball (he's a one hander by the way and used that) and he also had a spare ball with a thumb hole. He simply had the extra hole filled and the balls are now legal. Many many many people just had holes filled. People didn't go buy new balls just because of the rule.

@@jimboscalawag8809 In the 1970's strict rules were put in place on ball reactions and strengths because the scoring pace was rising unexpectedly do to the new technology and they started to crack down hard on that to keep the game honest, just like what was done for Baseball which remains the same sport as the past. Also oil patterns started to get longer than 24' increasing the scoring pace and it was a big concern that patterns that could "funnel" the ball must be prevented. So even a terrible beginner resin ball would be illegal at that time as a total cheater ball. And House Shots would never be allowed. So my point is, total cheater balls and funnel house shots would be highly illegal during that period of the 70's, but they are the norm today. What does that tell you about where the game is today?
