SO BASICALLY copyright was very strange with Fate/Zero ep1 here (hence the 2 hours delay). I managed to get it as it is (full opacity, decent audio, no op) however it blocked 9% of my audience regionally. Currently debating in the discord the solution to this dilemma Feel free to give feedback or thoughts on this, copyright is very strange sometimes so I'm just trying to figure it out.

Just make it blurry and do a timer, people will just put up their copy of the episode to watch along. From my experience on watching reactors, I heard them mention that this series is pretty harsh on copyrights. I even expect this video to be down after a couple of weeks because of copyright strike.

Fun fact. The hassan i sabbah clan was a real clan of assassins from which the word assassin originated from. Most of the servants are based off of real historical figures or legends/myths. FYI, while Fate often adds its own twists to the original myths and history of the servants, this series often expects you to be familiar with the original myths of the heroes already to some extent, so if you learn a hero's name it's not a bad idea to do some independent research on the original myths and such if that is something you're interested in knowing more about.

I started by being super drunk in my uni flat and randomly watching Fate prisma Illya 3rei with zero context besides "I hear Fate is good." No regrets. The alcohol kept my memory vague enough that I didn't feel spoiled, but I knew how freaking hype it was gonna get.

The reason the power system, may feel "video game like" as you put it, is partially due to Fate's origins as a visual novel. The original game, Fate/Stay Night, included stats on each servant that would update as more was revealed about each party involved in the Holy Grail War. Naturally, when Zero was written afterword's, this had to carry over due to taking place before stay/night. I think this overall adds to Fate's unique story telling capabilities, even if stats don't effect battle outcome that much. Anways, I hope you enjoy Zero, it was my first as well, it has it's problems, especially regarding inconsistencies with the original vn, but it is an amazing story nonetheless, cant wait for you to experience more of the nasu-verse.

Glad to see you could absorb so much from this episode. While I agree with the people saying Zero is the best starting point if you're anime-only, the fact remains that it's a prequel and expects most people to be familiar with the background. It takes this episode to get newbies up to speed, but it does that with a bit of a crash course on a ton of necessary background info, and a lot of people get complety overwhelmed by it. As far as the whole "I thought her name was saber but saver is a class" thing, Herioc Spirits are referred to by they're class and not their name, because if you know who they are then you have a strategic advantage. The best example I've heard: imagine you're fighting some servant who seems invulnerable to all of your attacks, and leaves you at a loss...until you hear their master shout their name "Achilles!" Suddenly you go from hopelessly retreating, to focusing all of your attacks onto that heel, and the fight looks very different.

Kara no Kyoukai gives you a glimpse into the world of magi. With Fate, you're fully immersed in the world of magi. You'll probably notice a lot of related terms and concepts with the 5th movie of KnK, for example Tokiomi as a magus wants to reach Akasha just like Araya. The Holy Grail War should actually be seen as a great ritual similar to Araya's apartment complex, it's a system created to reach the root of Akasha through the summoning of the Holy Grail. So Fate has a bunch of characters from history, mythology, folklore, etc... I'll give you a quick overview of their identities, as Fate somehow thinks you already know them and won't take the time to explain who they are (for example, they'll NEVER tell you who the hell this "Hassan" guy is). So yeah, Hassan-i-Sabbah, summoned under the Assassin Class. Nicknamed “the Old Man of the Mountain” by Marco Polo, he was the founder of the Nizari Ismai'li sect widely known as the Hashshashin. This name, “Hashshashin”, is the origin for the modern term of “Assassin”. While the term “Assassins” refers to the sect as a whole, in reality only a portion of the members of the sect, known as fedayeen actually practiced assassination. Nevertheless, they cultivated a strong image as a sect of assassins and were widely feared by the Crusaders. In the nasuverse, Hassan-i-Sabbah is actually the pseudonym shared by the nineteen leaders of the Hashshashin.As the name of the sect is the etymological root of the word "assassin;" the class name itself thus acts as the Catalyst to summon the members of the organization. Within the Fuyuki Holy Grail War system, the only qualifying Heroic Spirits for the Assassin-Class are the nineteen Hassan-i-Sabbah because the requirement for those who might truly be described as perfect assassins would normally be to remain anonymous and consequently fail to become Heroic Spirits (great legends of humanity), so only the Old Man of the Mountain who is known throughout history would normally be applicable for the Assassin class. This is also why they aren’t proper Heroic Spirit, as they are not “individual hero” but more unknown assassins unknown to history but with a famous named attacher to them. They are what you could call “wraiths”, the same kind of spirits that appears in movie 4 of Kara no Kyoukai. Though they are less mindless as Heroic Spirits candidates. They have all lost their faces and names upon becoming wraiths, instead only having carved out faces hidden behind skull masks. (By the way, I'm only giving information that isn't explained in the anime.) Servants have TTRPG-inspired profiles with different skills (nasu is just a huge ttrpg nerd). They are divided into 2 types: Class Skills and Personal Skills. Class Skills are skills that are granted by the Class, while Personal Skills are skills that are personal to the Servant and that they possessed when they were alive before becoming a Servant. Servants of the Assassin class possess the class skill “Presence Concealment”. This allows them to disappear completely, making them almost impossible to detect. However, its effectiveness will decrease when preparing to attack. The Assassin class typically comprises individuals who excel in anonymity and stealth, making them perfect for covert operations. Berserkers have the Mad Enhancement Class-Skill which makes them completely insane but also gives them huge paramate boosts. And as for the Saber, the Einzbern have decided to summon King Arthur Pendragon. He’s pretty famous but I’ll talk a bit about him just in case. According to legends, he was a legendary king of Britain who organized the defense of the Celtic peoples of the British Isles against the Saxon invaders from Germany at the end of the 5th century. Arthur quickly became an important character in literature. For example, in the 12th century, the French writer Chrétien de Troyes added Lancelot du Lac and the Holy Grail to King Arthur’s mythology and created the genre of Arthurian romance, which became an important area of medieval literature. In these stories, the narrative often focuses on other characters, such as the various Knights of the Round Table (his Avenger team) instead of focusing on King Arthur. He’s the wielder of the sword Excalibur, hence the Saber class.

It's mentioned that mage family's pass down their life's work and potential through the generations. However, only one child in the family can inherit the family crest as trying to divide it would dilute it. As such, when a family has more than one child with great talent for magic, in-fighting is inevitable, sometimes almost encouraged, in mage families. Remember in Garden of Sinners movie 5 it was mentioned that Touko Aozaki lost the battle for her family's inheritance to her younger sister as well. If one child could receive the inheritance of another mage family instead of having to fight with their sibling for the family crest, then that would be seen as a great stroke of fortune for a mage family.

The impression of power system thing is because Fate originally visual novel with status page, so that they build from that way probably, it sure sounds very game at first, but the more you get into their lore you will just easily adapted It is understandable in a way that, Mage Association have thousand years of history, they have to use terms and standard to classify strength, rarity, and so on Else it would be inconvinient without a way to describe those in a better precision given those mages goes through their research and discovering for so many generations, like hey this item or spirit is about rank A B C rather than strong, very strong

Saber, Lancer, Archer, Assassin, Beserker, Caster and Rider are just classes. Where characters from mythology/history or stories are summoned in to so a saber is not always the same character for exaple Julius Caesar and King Arthur are both Sabers.

Really looking forward to the Fate journey! If playing the Visual Novel is not an option (which it obviously isnt for an anime reaction channel) Fate/Zero is overall probably the best starting point for the Fate series. Just keep in mind that this is a prequel to the main work, and it is written by a different author (Gen Urobuchi is goated though, he also wrote Madoka magica for example). Also Fate /Zero is quite different from the main work tone-wise. Among the Fate animes, people tend to like it the most though.

I'm holding out hope for him to stick with it all the way to prisma though, because seeing his monogatari reactions has me thinking he'll be able to breeze through the fanservice with some jokes, and add himself to the painfully short list of 3rei and oath under snow reactors

It should probably be noted that Fate Zero is a prequel to Fate Stay Night which is based off of a visual novel that has 3 alternate routes: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heavens Feel. The 3 routes had to be played in that order in the visual novel too, as information gets revealed to the reader in such a way that you should already know info from a previous route. Unfortunately, the first route of Fate Stay Night, the Fate route, does not have a good anime adaptation like the other 2 do, which is why there is so much controversy over watch order. There is an anime adaptation for the Fate route sort of, but it's just not good and no one recommends it. As such, Fate Zero often serves as a replacement for the Fate route to deliver all the introductory information, and since it is a prequel, it does front load a lot of it rather than pacing it out like Fate Stay Night does. The issue is that since it is a prequel to all 3 routes, it gives too much information and can spoil some of the mysteries of Fate Stay Night, which is again why there is so much controversy over watch order. Also since there are multiple routes, it should be noted that there are alternate timelines as well. FYI, Prisma Illya is a timeline where the 4th Holy Grail War (the events of Fate Zero) never comes to fruition.
