The Home-Made Car (1963)

A BP sponsored award winning silent film from 1963. Non-monetised as it's not my film but freely available on several websites. The film is one of my favourites and very suitable for this channel.
A young man sets to work restoring a vintage car at the home of his aunt. The little girl who lives next door is intent on sabotaging his project at any cost, but when he wins her over with a smile, she ends up helping him to build it. He completes the project and wins the hand of the girl’s older sister, who has been dating a feckless local who tears around in a sports car.
The film was shot largely in and around Farnborough, Hampshire, and Cove, Hampshire. The car was rebuilt at Blackwell Cottage, Cambridge Road West, Farnborough. The house remains, although the garage has been replaced by a detached house, now number 26. The house where the little girl lived, next door, is also still there. As well as Farnborough, parts of the filming took place at the petrol station in Bucks Horn Oak, Hampshire and Seale, Surrey.
The film became a cult success when regularly broadcast as a trade test colour transmission on the run up to the start of BBC2 colour transmissions. Originally screened from September 1968 until August 1973, it was one of a series of short films broadcast to help television engineers set up new colour television sets. Other popular offerings were The North Sea Quest, Overhaul, Crown of Glass, Roads to Roam, The Small Propeller, The Cattle Carters, Prospect for Plastics, A Journey into the Weald of Kent, Giuseppina and Evoluon.
The music was by Ron Grainer and it includes a pastiche of the theme from Steptoe and Son when an old rag and bone man tries to steal the front wings and radiator shell from the still incomplete car.

Ah, the vacuum cleaner powered spray gun. My mum used one to spray the peach tree every year against curly leaf. Never had any peaches though. Reminded me of "Its your move"

Nick. I remember this from the BBC colour trade tests when I was a nipper. The only thing that stuck in my mind was the scene with old woman with the pegs in her mouth. Paradoxically I've only ever seen it in colour on KZbin. Being a nerdy geek I found the garage featured on Google Earth, it's near Borden. Only change since 1963 is that it's got a canopy over the pumps. Sweet little film, the sort of thing that on a dull day at school they used to get the old blue/grey B&H 16mm projector out for to keep us quiet.

The house where our hero rebuilds his car is a stone’s throw from The Aviator hotel at Farnborough, I walk past often if I’m out for a constitutional. It’s tempting to make a ‘then and now’ film, a long way to go in the Vauxhall but quite a fun idea….

@@pfield39 I did some banner towing from Deenthorpe about 30 years ago, when the new A14 dual carriageway opened. The map the client provided was not distinct and the written instructions little better. So I towed the blasted banner up and down the A14 for an hour and even then, failed to fly over the correct junction!

G'day, Inspired by Fleming's book, "Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang...!", but made 4 years before the Box-Office Hit ? The opening shots are almost identical. Very very VERY Period... No way would anyone today Get away With casting the Thieving Rag & Bone Man with a big Hooked Nose... Which was then Hammered down and Underlined by the TWO Stars of David On his Beret... Quite the White Anglo-Saxon Jew-Baiting Little bit of British Imperial Cinematography, Olde Bean...! Having a quick, quiet, sly, sneaky little Jab at the image of the "Eternal Jew" As employed by Goebbels A mere 20 years earlier - Presumably to Embed support for the King's having agreed to give up British Palestine To all the (surviving) EuroPeon Jews Whose Homes had long-since Bin-Appropriated by all their immediate Neighbours... As a 1961-vintage Australian, I grew up with this sort of Propaganda in the Art & Culture, but it's really only when looking through the Seebackroscope that one realises how the Memes were Laid-on Inches-thick, with a Trowel, And then Hammered home by Repetition. After I made the initial comment, then I watched the rest...; and, mate, half the scenes between the Grownup restoring his Bullnose Morris (?), right down to the 1-Gallon rectangular Petrol Can, Toolbox & Jack on the Running-Boards...; And the little Girl Next Door...; if taken and released at the Canned Film Festival, these days...; might not see the Film&makers Charged - but they would be castigated and called out and vilified - for "portraying Grown Men Grooming Little Girls In a favourable light..." (!). I won't list the Shots here, but look at that Film, and consider what the entire Child-Protection INDUSTRY would maka a fuss complaining about ; if Anyone tried to screen that in any Public Place, as a new release...(!). The Past was a Different Country. My father was 52 & my mother was 24 when I was born, the Age Gap was 4 years older than she was...; so I do tend to notice such Mismatches...(!). But then I wind up switching the Radio on, to listen to while while typing out a longer comment, on my Phone, after watching the whole thing... I was struck by the ChittyBangChittyBang similarity - otherwise I probably would have clicked out..., then I was grabbed by the Nostalgia of that Neo-Elizabethan Age British Imperial Triumphalism... When the thieving Rag & Bone Man first appeared I was a bit shocked, and the second appearance of the Caricature featuring two Stars of David drove me to my Keyboard ,- with the video playing in the background. On posting the comments, I went back to see what the Cinematography behind the Soundtrack was like... And, yeah, then British Petroleum portrayed what today would be called "Grooming" scenarios, with the Schoolchild interested in the Restorationist well before her big sister noticed the Boy Next Door... But he finished by driving off Into the Sunset, With the Pretty Girl, And His Dog along to play Gooseberry, While the little Sister rides in what they used to call, I kid you not... "The Dickie Seat". ALL to Normalised the idea of The average young Batchelor Acquiring and rejuvenating an old Bomb of a Car, In order to Have a Car In order to have Any possible hope of Winning the affections of any Particular Sweet Young Thing... Therefore, Thus & Because... Boosting Demand for Petrol, Oil, & Lubricants, all To be burnt up While Courting....! Multinationals retain Professorial-Level Psychologists to advise them, when Concocting and confecting such Gems of Marketing Jism... "Oh bright & shiny Landfill..., Oh Bright & Shiny Landfill..., OH BRIGHT & SHIIIIINY LAAAAANNNDFILLL...; For THUS..., We Trashed the EARTH...!" OoooPsie ! Such is life, Have a good one...
