The reason why Costco can do it (take a loss), is because their business is purely making money off a subscription fee. They either make a loss or break even on literally everything else. No small business could do that.

loss leaders are a thing in basically every business, its just harder to see sometimes in the case of costco theyre able to have such an extreme precieved loss leader because of the subscription fee the hotdogs alone cost over 5$ to make

To be fair its a very nice grocery store, they carry a lot of good stuff at reasonable prices. They were also giving out grocery store discount coupons with the purchase at the cafe.

The burger for 2.55 is their lost leader. Like the 1.50 hot dogs are Costco or 5 dollar roaster chicken at Kroger. The food is already discounted so they can draw more customers. Why would they give out a coupon when the burger IS THE COUPON?

this style burger (oklahoma fried onion burger) was invented during the great depression. meat was so expensive so they decided to add a handful of thinly sliced onions to smash into the patty to use less meat. The burger was invented at Hamburger Inn in El Reno, Oklahoma.

I don't know how #Munchies always finds these great start up and family businesses to showcase that you can make it... but I am happy they do. Is there anything better than learning about people doing their own small part to make the world a better place? If you are in NYC please stop by and support them by hitting the grocery store (and maybe grabbing a burger to go). What people dont realize is its very clever marketing. They might not make any money on the burger but it gets people in the door, and talking, and sharing and clicking. This all creates hype and hype =more customers who spend money on other products in the store. Just what grocery stores do, you go in for milk and come out with lots more … The £1 burger man in blackpool is the same, and people spend money in his arcade

That burger looks amazing and for $2.55?!? Hell, makes me almost wish I still lived in Jersey. I'd hightail it over the bridge so fast. I remember how many miles we'd go for good food. Ah but gas was so much cheaper then.

idk what it was like then but today youd pay a $15 toll to enter ny from nj. and you can go around but youd have to drive 5 hours. and yes then youd probably spend more on gas than the toll would be.

those dudes working next store found a gem. they said 2 years they been on that job! 2 years of amazing burgers. im so jealous. I will say it is word to mouth, if i knew of a spot like this around me i would be going and telling everyone as well. but i dont know of any in my area..

This is like Costco and its hotdog combo. Smart, have an item that’s on there for cheap that attracts people so they’ll more likely to shop at your place. As that item will feel like a reward after all that shopping.

Growing up there was a place like this next to the train station. my dad and I would get these same type burgers before getting on the train to NYC. I had all forgot about these memories until I saw this video. I gotta go try the burger next time I'm in the city.
