I work in pricing/finance for a company that sells hundreds of millions of dollars of construction materials every year. We sell products at a loss all the time to make customers happy, or because industry competitors who focus on specific products can sell at a better price than we can, so we match those prices to keep business. It's a good strategy, as long as you keep it within reason and either 1. don't give discounts on the wrong item, or 2. keep those losses to specific items (doesn't really matter if even a very popular item loses money if it's only one or a select few).
