I think they could have incorporated interviews by others who have relocated back to Senegal 1 year, 5 years or more to get their perspectives and experiences. They might even want to consider a follow-up so they can educate others who may be considering moving.

I'm having this exact feeling currently. I'm coming back to Africa in the next 5 years. I recently went to my original country Guinea and was quite surprised about how everything has changed positively and talking to my friends there made me realize how much wealth I could make there. There is this sentiment you feel in Europe where no matter how much time you spend there, you'll never feel home there. You'll feel different and only in Africa you won't feel disrespected or degraded for who you are. My country Guinea is improving fast, like the income per person has risen by almost 1000 $ and the gross revenue of the country has doubled in less than 10 years.

My husband is half Senegalese and he wants us to move to Senegal in the future. He does not want to raise our children in the United States because of the police brutality and racism he faced as a child and I agree and will be with him. This is very similar to the Black French experience from what I’m seeing.

French culture is very hypocritical they tell you are all equal but is not true. Jobs are hard to find and blacks and Arabs are treated as the problem it is a welfare state. Africa has greatly changed for the better these days, you can get almost everything you need plus good internet service being available is key because most people these days spend half or above half of their time on the internet so it doesn't really matter where you live, but with Africa comes lower costs and a more laid back lifestyle.

Interesting take from this doc is those returning are people born in France who no longer feel a sense of belonging due to hostility/religion/racism and being always looked on as foreigners in their place of birth! It takes courage and maturity to come to this realisation & it’s a personal journey for most of them. The irony is that we have young people dying in their thousands trying to cross the Mediterranean into Europe hoping to find their “El Dorado “ 🤦🏾‍♂️

I welcome those returning to our continent but they must not forget the harsh reality that each African country is facing. From food insecurities, quality of healthcare, civil unrests, terrorism, crime , and unstable politics. Visit those countries a lot of times before settling and always have backups. Here in SA (South Africa 🇿🇦) , we get a lot of black diaspora from the UK and the US. We are always making them aware of our unfortunate high crime rate. We made huge headways when it comes to our corruption (we are number 70 out of 180 countries (top 5 are places like Norway and Sweden), meaning we are far better than most countries in the world. Hope we reach top 50.

They will keep buying at French supermarkets eating like in France, except that everything is imported thus more expensive than in France. That's maybe luxury in Senegal but that's basic in France. The girl in the end was offended because she wasn't considered Senegalese but she doesn't live, speak, act, reason like a Senegalese, she does all that like a French person. Anyway my point was that they can do all that in France. Build a business and live the grand life. Millions of French people of any background even from their ethnic minority do it just find. They chose Senegal that wasn't a luxury choice but an easy choice because of their family connections, good for them. It doesn't mean that they will be more successful or richer.

Do you know that some of the people sold into slavery were also slave traders themselves? Who’s to say yours weren’t? How would you feel if you found that out? Also, in terms of countries selling you, that’s impossible. What you are looking for is a certain ethnic group/ tribe or even a singular person. Judging by your age you should know that slavery was very complex and has many nuances. So for you to try to label an entire continent is crazy. I can relate with the uncle of Marie that there also needs to be certain things we do discreet. Because it is the ignorance that create fear and situations. Because the European is seemingly living their lives in the openness and have left many traditions behind, but what they are doing in the dark and the closeness of their homes that is for them. As these African diaspora move to the continent, African governments will a revenue source. To maintain that revenue stream, African governments will be forced to improve things like infrastructure, waste management, healthcare, etc. This is the case with for example Accra, Ghana. Accra has changed significantly since with increased in tourism from diaspora.

there is this assumption that colonialism was the same .French was the worst because it involved what they called assimilation.. between colonialist and citizens were local elites that only imposed the will of colonialist. 6 of 10 poorest nations of Africa speak french. add Haiti and places like new calendonia

Yeah right. Or tell me I don't know anything about Africa without saying it. All the former French colonies in Africa are ruled by the natives who own all the wealth, power, lands etc. So much we can say about the former British colonies for instance. The populations live in a safe environment and in harmony with the immigrants or colonists descendants. You need to lock yourself up in a high security gated community in the others. The former French colonies have a small population so what about their GDP? They are located in less rich areas in terms of natural resources and yet when we look at the GDP per capita they aren't doing worse than the rich former British colonies. Haiti got independence 200 years ago and has been under US governance for decades. If in 1000 years Haiti still doesn't get its act together you'll also blame it in the colonisation? Haiti wasn't even a colony like the others but a land where slaves were brought to work the land and they weren't asked to assimilate. They got independence right after the end of slavery. Speaking French doesn't make you a former French colony 🤦 What about New Caledonia? That's not even a country. But if it was it would be the 4th richest country in Oceania and would have the 3rd highest GDP per capita in the same league with New Zealand and Australia. So much we can say with all the former British colonies out there? Which coincidentally aren't colonies of replacement where the natives were wiped out, the survivors till this day treated like second rate citizens and all the wealth, lands and power in the hands of the colonists descendants.

French colonialism was actually less brutal and racist if you compare with the English, the Spanish, the Germans or the Dutch. Assimilation is not necessary a bad thing; it also means considering others as equal. Regarding your outdated argument about French speaking Africa: The main reason is because they are in the Sahel. A harsh land with historical violence. Just like Sudan. It has nothing to do with the language. An odd explanation pushed by the British universities.

While as an Orthodox Christian, if i do not observe fasting but a collegue does, nobody will call me out for eating meat in front of her. Great interesting documentary. Question - does it work both ways then? If lots of young black French people of African origin want to be part of a society and culture where they feel their parents and grandparents values are represented and where they look like the locals and feel like they fit in, does the exact same thing apply to indigenous white Europeans?

Assuming that you actually care for a reply, the various perspectives presented make it clear that the "need" for representation by those who look like them emerged largely (if not exclusively) as a reaction to the racism experienced by many young Black French citizens & their immigrant parents/grandparents. Even after adapting & being integrated into general French society, so many of them noticed that they were still viewed as "the other" rather than equals. If this were not the case, young black French people would feel at home, in their home. Even those from the French Caribbean (which is more culturally similar to the mainland than many other European countries) aren't spared from such discrimination. Ethnically French people are still the overwhelming majority in their nation, and the only segment among them that may reasonably claim to be at odds with modern French values & representation are practising Christians (particularly Catholics). Where in the world are white Europeans settling in large numbers among a non-white majority for your question to even be relevant?

​@@isaiah3872 There is no such thing as an ethnic French for French isn't an ethnicity. Who told you that the Black French people don't feel at home and represented. You said it yourself that some face bad things like discrimination. Some aren't supposed to represent everyone. Why a bunch of people are supposed to represent everybody? Those people tell THEIR story it doesn't mean that all the Black French people in France have similar story.

10:25 somehow l hope I’m overreacting, but it feels like the zeitgeist is that the west is done with Black people now that we are way past slavery and segregation. Populists want to push them out of their societies by ill treating them. And if they leave of their own volition without any reparations, well… that is a tidy little win.
