Father-of-two Mouhamed has never been to sea, but he is about to take what is fast becoming the deadliest migrant journey in the world: the Atlantic crossing from West Africa to Spain’s Canary Islands.
Facing days, even weeks, on the open ocean, this year more than 70,000 irregular migrants and refugees are expected to attempt this perilous journey, many of them in overcrowded wooden boats.
From Senegal, Mouhamed will have to survive the treacherous crossing with little more than a handful of biscuits and a few bottles of water, all to achieve his dream of making it to the southern border of Europe. For all those who make it to the Canaries, there will be thousands who die trying. It’s a tragedy unfolding in real time, buried under world headlines.
In this hard-hitting investigation, #BBCAfricaEye reporter Mame Cheikh Mbaye takes viewers into the secretive world of migrants hoping to escape conflict and extreme poverty in Senegal and neighbouring countries, and what they hope will be a brighter future in Europe.
Mame Cheikh follows Mouhamed as he prepares himself for a journey that, one way or another, will alter the trajectory of his life forever. Negotiating with the criminals organising the crossing, getting ready without alerting police suspicion, before finally receiving the call from his smuggler to head to a secret hideout in preparation for a midnight departure. Mouhamed’s story intimately captures his journey, the viewer is with him throughout, including when he is in an open boat en route to the Canary Islands.
Mame Cheikh also talks to the families who have lost loved ones while attempting the crossing, secures rare access to the smugglers organising the migrant boats and meets with the Spanish authorities who are on the front line disrupting the criminal networks involved in this deadly trade. Throughout the film, he explores some of the motivations which are driving tens of thousands onto the boats in search of what they think could be a better life… only for many to perish, turning the Atlantic Ocean into a mass grave.

I recently moved to Valencia Spain and have met two guys who took that journey. One from Senegal and one is from Gambia. They showed me video on their phone. I can say, while they are thankful to have survived the journey, life is still very difficult for them here in Valencia, as they don't have the proper papers to obtain work legally. They do have shelter in a church that works with the immigrants, and they attend spanish language classes. I pray for them.

How will Africa change when these so called western countries have deliberately creat global institutions that are aimed at keeping Africa poor. Yes our leaders might have a part to play but global economic/financial system in their current state do not favour Africa developing.for example? Why re most African countries still speaking colonial languages despite gaining independence?

As a Kenyan I don’t understand why the Senegalese are running away from their country and embarking on such dangerous journeys when Senegal is one of the fastest growing economies in Africa! They also have a good government system too! They have fought for a better government and now the best thing they can do is stay and make Senegal the country of their dreams!

That's the problem with our fellow brothers and sisters. They don't realise that every place has opportunities not just in europe but africa as well. Most people from my country are trying to find opportunities and I would rather migrate to a better african nation than running away illegally.

Senegalese here and worked with Kenyans a Remote job for 3 years. Let me tell you that the reality on the ground is very different almost dystopian. Those crazy figures of growth are nothing more but stats of projected growth and are solely focused in the Capital city Dakar Plateau and surrounding bougie neighborhoods of Dakar which is the only advanced region of the country. All administrative offices, companies and major opportunities are concentrated there alone. In comparison you’d have something like the Nice part of Nairobi versus inland Kenya. Opportunity exists everywhere but when tourists come and buy beach front properties and then rent them on Airbnb and online platforms and yet cash in all of the profits themselves, the hotel industry ended up crashing, not to talk about Chinese and European boats siphoning fish off of our seas with industrial size boats and equipments in comparison to small wooden boats the same used to go to Europe. Oh and the Indians competing with farmers and small real estate bureaus with their thousands of allocated acres of land that we the people could never have access to even if it’s a small piece of land the straining processes and fees is unbearable. Another thing is majority of businesses that hire are small and struggle to sign clients so hiring ain’t in the budget, everybody hangs on nails and teeth to their jobs because if you loose it then you’re in deep trouble especially with Dakar being the second most expensive city to live in west Africa. All this doesn’t justify mass immigration but also the peer pressure of society and families on men making them feel worthless and borderline insulting them daily is what truly pushes them. Again you can work the land instead of

Economic growth does not necessarily mean higher quality of life if that wealth is not shared among the people or not used adequately to develop the country you can have a gdp per capita of 17k but still have many people struggling (equatorial Guinea in 2008) if that money is kept in offshore accounts instead of development

Here's some news nobody here is talking about. Africans go to Europe and they can't work the first few years because of language issues and so on. They are raising taxes everywhere in Western Europe. Europeans are finding it harder and harder to find social housing because there are so many migrants also waiting in line. European citizens are paying for all this, and they're tired of it. Yes, life in Africa is hard, and everybody feels for you, but it shouldn't be some poor German person's responsibility to pay for your family's apartment and income.

If you stop exploiting Africa to maintain your standard of living you wouldn't want have this problem. You think Africans want to leave Thier families behind to go and live with Europeans. No they have no choice because European states and corporations are still exploiting the African continent and paying off greedy, unpatriotic and corrupt African leaders and bureaucrats. The dying on route to Europe goes on for decades now and we still did not find a way to fix it. I don't see any alternative to the opening up of legal routes for the ambitious on the one hand and immediate sending back of people who came by the dangerous, illegal route on the other hand. As long as the dangerous route gets rewarded, people will try it. Yet, migration to Europe is seen as an investment in Africa. There must be legal outlets for these energies - by legal migration, by migration of trained labor (both to cater European needs and to increase "returns") and by strengthening African market integration (maybe by the creation of "special economic zones" that would offer more legal protection and less red tape to investors). Legal outlets for African ambitions must be able to outcompete the illegal ones, if we want to get out of the crisis.

It is imposable for them to understand that countries are sending immigrant home even Sweden is talking about giving immigrant $ 34.000.00 to go back wherever they came from and you want to get on a boat or raff and risk your life in 2024 make it make sense. Sir it would be a better education if you would setup T.V.s and show them how these countries are living and don't have enough for their own people let alone migrants and ask them what type of skills do they even have before risking your life and another big problem always talking about taking care of someone who should have been taking care of you.

Sometimes when you have no option, you will be pushed to do the worst things to survive….lets pray for each other and understand each others struggles. No one is better than the other, we just have to do what we have to do.

The main issue is the western countries using their currencies as weapons. All African countries needs to join the BRICS group of countries by removing themselves from WTO and IMF to downgrade their currencies. The western currencies is the way to make more migrants look for greener pastures whereby country like the Uk still benefitting billions yearly from their former colonies why the citizens of those countries are suffering their own are enjoying free housing and benefits not to talk of free healthcare. We have an organisation called the United Nations which to me is a word because the world was never united. They create all kind of organisations to downplay third world countries around the globe. African leaders have been brainwashed and the ones with stable mindsets are dislike by the western power because of their views to promote better governance. They enjoyed corruption to reign across Africa continents because most of the stolen money are transferred to foreign banks in the west then withheld through sanctions which go back to their economy while heir citizens enjoy the money as benefits in return. Uk has no resources but yet the country is thriving. The Uk and the United States have debt combined together than Africa as a continent, but yet their currencies value remains stable because they know how to play the system by creating false organisations asking our leaders to devalue their currencies to remain on top despite trillions of debt by the United States and Uk. Africa as a continent needs to wake up because the west can never give slavery. We are experiencing modern day slavery across the western countries. We can achieve anything if we have leaders that care more about their citizens instead of dealings with western organisations for their own benefits.
