All this can be summed up with the phrase, "there is no free lunch". There is nothing wrong with each side wanting something in exchange for another thing from the other person as long as 1. each side honestly reveal what they want 2. both parties fulfill their obligations. The common problem in most relationships (work, business, spousal/romantic, family, etc.) is that one side keeps taking without giving in return. If you're not giving, you're just a freeloader. No one wants to stay with a freeloader for very long.
