Am I the only one who found it really strange that the comic asks us to take all of that abuse seriously, while at the same time not acknowledging any number of other equally messed up things in the story, which nonetheless are played for laughs because they are so absurd? I will never be able to see all of what Dave went through as anything but a joke and everything after retcon but before epilogues as generally incongruent. A large part of the reason is that no one in real life could ever be subjected to ninja puppet shadow fights involving swords and whatnot, because it is so outrageous. To do so would, to me, cheapen ACTUAL, real abuse that people go through in our world

There's something about a fucked up situation, played for laughs, only to later be shown to really negatively affect the victim that could help people recognize abuse that happens to them and people around them. I may be wrong because I never been in a seriously abusive situation (to my knowledge), but I dealt with depression and shitty situations, and when in the midst of it, I always felt things were kinda... normal, only recognizing a lot of it as tragic after the fact.

I've honestly wanted to ask this question for while: What is actually wrong with Hussie? Guy spends years of his live writing a comic and building up his fame only to disregard it by selling it to Viz media and then give a bunch of hacks complete authority to write whatever the hell they want about his story. Now whenever he adds anything to Homestuck it's always to piss off the fans and make them hate the story even more. Compare him to Toby for example: Guy spends years making a game, it gets insanely popular and gets a bunch of money and fame from it, his community loves him. Then he stops making games for years and comes back with another game for which he's getting even more praise for and will eventually make more money from it. Toby "Radiation" Fox has an arguably better career and success than Hussie nowadays.

When Act2 came out, a lot of ppl actually got uncomfortable with their interactions since Joey was almost 15 and Elwurd 16 in the game, some even started associating liking Elwurd or shipping her with Joey pr0sh1pp1ng(all of this bc some fans see Joey as still a child due to her naivety she has in the game) Unfortunately Elwurd is the only character most ppl are low-key afraid to make fan anything out of her bc of this :( I totally get why you probably didn't know about this while making the video since it mostly happened on Insta and Twitter

MeGaLoVania The song is hotly contested- People will argue about whether it's a Vriska song since it features her signature instrument (guitar) or Aradia since Wake centers around Aradia. 2. Vriska There's a lot more Vriska trivia, her Wiki trivia page is really great. Hm- Someone should make a feature length documentary about her 🤔 3. SBAHJ SBAHJ was loosely based on a webcomic that Hussie intended to mock called "Higher Technology" which is a stereotypical Gamer Comic of that era which originated the :y face. You mention this later on but never the name. 4. Books The books have ended, they are still in print, but the books will not tell the entire story, tragically. 5. Flash For some reason, the official renders of the Homestuck flashes on their main youtube channel are incredibly poor quality in spite of flash supporting high-def renders. It's unknown why this is as fans have uploaded better versions prior to the flash discontinuation. You mention this later but it's still wild to me 6. Paradox Space The final episode of Paradox Space was only released in a hard-copy book that sold out its first day. Vrisky Business is now only viewable if you manage to find scans of it. 7. Formspring You mention Solluxander but not Eridaniel. 8. Caucasian The controversy as I remember it was actually the reverse. Andrew seemed to be *making fun of* people who exclusively considered the characters white and people were angry he was making fun of white people. This was during a time that long-time MSPA Forum-goers were embittered to a perceived "SJW" turn Andrew Hussie was taking. "Peachy" was replaced because it was intended to be the joke before the controversy. 9. Dante Basco Dante voices Rufioh in Voxus's let's read. Pretty cool. 10. Retcon The Retcon Juju item isn't white- It's actually transparent in the .gif. 11. Beta Kid Designs There's actually a pic somewhere of Dave with a block-head. I can't find it but I know it exists 12. Dave's Blog The only canonical place where Dave uses punctuation. Also he says the N word (you mention this i just think its wild) 13. Viz Ruined Homestuck This one is just sad. The ads are flush with the panels, now. Very bad. 14. TUHSC The slur replacement project is compatible with this. It's also a resource to read SBAHJ and other obscure related works. The best thing Hussie ever did was let his work slide into unofficial public domain. 15. I totally get that! It's really overwhelming, especially considering how long it is and that you'd probably have to re-read the whole thing to better understand everything. That's actually what I'm doing right now and honestly, I'm not regretting it!😊 Once you start with the first few hundred pages, you just... keep going? So yeah I can highly recommend to start reading it again^^

I don't usually comment but this event lived SO rent free in my head. The What Pumpkin Discourse lived rent free in my head for DAYS after the whole Sarah Z fiasco and longer after Hussie got involved because it felt a little demoralizing as a fan. Like they both represented the facts about what she said either poorly, or suggested that only haters have such thoughts or opinions. Even though there were plenty of fans who were put off by some of the behavior they've seen from WP. Like somehow she's the one that originated these thoughts and fans hadn't been discussing them this whole time. I think broadly though everyone has to decide what they are and aren't willing to put up with. And I'm willing to live with the situation as it is because I believe in this community and the people inside of it.

I mean, I'm a fan. I've been one since September 2009. I don't like her video because it isn't about Homestuck as much as it is about Hussie and businesses that emerged around Homestuck. It gives almost zero merit to the comic where it shines, and just doomposts and focuses primarily on drama. It's, objectively, an exercise of focusing on the negative for a good half of the video or more, and less that of the comic and more about business blunders. Frankly, she doesn't talk about pluses in general very much, but of Homestuck in particular, and for that, I don't think her title on that video is very apt nor is it a very good take overall.

I somehow managed to get into homestuck when I was 10 for a bit. Wish I could’ve been born earlier so I could’ve actually been part of the fandom, cringey as it was. Reread and finally finished it like a year ago, and it’s really weird and sad just seeing the shadow of the massive fandom it once had. If only they hadn’t completely botched hiveswap, epilogues, HS^2, perhaps it would a still be a weird cultural juggernaut.

people don't seem to realize that the retcon powers weren't there to literally fix mistakes hussie thought they made or smthg. homestuck is meta as hell; the author has a self insert, caliborn takes over the story for a while. so while they're calling it a retcon, it's just another goofy time travel mechanic and not some attempt by the author to appease unhappy fans. they're pretty honest about their takes on fan takes. the Caucasian joke didn't start the race discourse, it was commenting on the already way out of control tumblr-brawling over headcanons

Slurs are okay, It was a product of the time and honestly the gritdiness helps the appeal. These were teenagers/ on the cusp of teenage hood. Going through the most stressful thing anyone could imagine creating and losing a universe. I think it is completely okay for them to say some "horrible" stuff (also Karkat's entire personality is the word. "Fuckass" and I love him)

I mean, I guess sending an entire fandom on a scavenger hunt for chocolate to make whatever they want canon isnt the wisest decision but literally anyone could've found it and made literally anything canon, so how is somone else completely unrelated to Hussie making John a trans woman Hussie trying to look good to the trans community? Im sorry if I sound a bit snarky or rude, I guess you could argue the same case with Roxy being a trans male in HS^2 but... I actually don't know if Hussie influenced that at all. Im pretty sure he's made himself unaffiliated with Homestuck at this point?

I'm sure others have pointed this out, but I was happy to hear "...that comes about at the end of the world" as opposed to the far more common "...that ends the world" in the intro. It doesn't make much of a difference to someone asking what Homestuck is as an outsider, sure, but only because answering "What is Homestuck?" with a blurb about the plot tells them almost nothing actually useful ABOUT what Homestuck is anyways. If you're going to summarize the plot before getting to the good stuff, it should at least be a summary that is accurate, albeit without totally spoiling the plot twist about the end of the world scenario they begin* the story in.
