The best way to start the xr150 is to put the choke all the way up and when you press the ignition give it gas and hold it for about 10 seconds, after that put it to half choke right after letting go of the throttle to let it idle. Also note that the bike will always die on full choke unless youre giving it gas. The xr150l has a hard start unless you do the "give 'er gas on full choke" method, i guess its because it makes the fuel richer and the longer you give it gas on full choke the more rich fuel mixes in the engine. Because ive noticed that if i give it 30 seconds of gas on full choke and then switch to half choke to let it idle it actually idles really good and fast-ish and doesnt sound like its about to die every second lmao.

There is no way that snorkel and screen restricts the airflow on that bike. Compare the size of all that open area with the intake valve which is a little over 1” in diameter, not accounting for the stem and other flow restrictors on a valve. Not only does the snorkel and screen have positive benefits but they also keep the intake noise down. The best thing you did was change the jets, hopefully it is better now.
@easyrider4x9 ай бұрын
Your idea to remove the header to get the bowl off was genius. I changed the pilot to 38 and the main to 115. I also turned up the idle screw a quarter turn. I did not mess with the air box or the exhaust (it was too loud without the spark arrestor). Cold start today was perfect at 50 deg F., 600 ft elevation. Half choke started right up with no priming. 15 seconds later choke off had perfect idle. Top speed was still 57 mph but I am 215 lbs. I may try a different front sprocket next. Thanks
@billwiley72165 ай бұрын
I agree that on these small engines the additional power potential from things like exhaust is minimal to the point of not being worth the trade off for the additional noise of the aftermarket exhaust much less the added expense. As these are delivered from the factory to get a carbureted engine to pass current U.S.A. EPA regulations they have to be super lean out of the box and fattening up the jet sizes a little will make the bike much more responsive and user friendly such as starting and rideability if done correctly. So many buy these small cc bikes and dump tons of dollars in them adding big bore kits, upping compression, cams, head porting trying to make them perform in a manner they were never designed for hence decreasing reliability and increasing the engines operating temps which then call for adding oil coolers and the like. Buy one of these, leave it virtually stock with the exception of minor low-cost improvements and enjoy it for what it was designed for, a small cheap gateway into a dual sport or a city commuter bike that is cheap to buy, insure and operate. If you want a lot more power buy a something like a 300cc bike that will better meet those goals.

I had this bike a few years ago, and re jetting is the best thing you can do to it. They come stupidly lean and as you experienced, after re jetting works much much better
@KO-pk7df7 ай бұрын
The jetting (needle adjustment also) will surly help all the way around. The pipe & slip-on with jetting will also be a small but noticeable positive. Honda put the fuel petcock with catch bowl on for two reasons. The fuel valve is supposed to "off" when you park the bike because the weight of the fuel in the tank is always pushing on that float needle & seat. If for any number of reasons fuel were to slowly trickle by the float seat & needle, the fuel will flow either to the carb overflow tube or worse into the engine, cylinder past the piston rings and into the engine where it will dilute the motor oil which is bad over time. People often just forget this, but it does happen and repeated over time is bad. The bowl below the fuel valve is to catch water and sediment from getting to the carburetor and crating problems there. You unscrew the bowl and empty it out taking note of what comes out. Over time you will see the see what comes out as the seasons and miles go by. All this information and much more used to come in the owner's manual. Hopefully new bikes will continue to provide these manuals even though people seem to be proud to say they never read them. As mechanics will often tell people "that problem could have been avoided if you read the owner's manual. That screen you took out of the airbox is a flame arrestor to stop your air filter from catching fire if engine backfires. The black baffle was designed to bring in air from that area but help redirect hot air that flows over the engine from going right into the air intake, it also helps lower the intake sound. Taking those things out of the intake does nothing to help and may even hurt power, ether way the amount it could help any power issues would not be measurable. Although even a little hot air would a be measurable negative. So often riders will believe they are getting more power from doing things that just make the engine louder, in truth it's not a way to judge performance. Discounting the noise and feeling the responsiveness of carb jetting is a better way.

"Snorkel", it's designed to keep water at bay hence the flared ends of the intake tubes on it, Honda has no idea what people are going to do with these bikes, especially when cleaning with a pressure washer, so they try to mitigate any and all potential for water to unintentionally enter the airbox, all manufacturers do this to some extent.

Good job. See, carbs aren't nearly the devil people make them out to be. :) I suspected you should have gone to the next size pilot but I didn't hear any popping on decel in the video. If it starts to crop up as the weather gets hotter and dryer, there is always the option. I think there is room for a slightly bigger main also. You opened up the air flow quite a bit. If you go back in to the carb for the pilot change, throw a main in there that is one or two sizes up to see what happens. You can try a sparkplug burn color check but unless they are done correctly, they can give false readings. The airbox screen was a backfire spark preventer. In the event of a backfire, a spark could be pushed up into the air filter causing it to catch fire. There were a lot of burned up bikes back in the day till those screens were introduced. Last, your jet kit seemed to work out just fine. I always recommend keihin brand jets with the star logo as I tried an off brand once that was waaay too lean on a two stroke dirtbike. You know what you are getting with keihin but your bike seems to run well.

I will say, the metal screen is good to have in the event of a backfire. It prevents the filter from catching fire. But honestly, on a 150 I seriously don't see that happening.

I’d be shocked if that happened. And if it does…well I guess that’s why we have full coverage insurance 🤷🏼♂️😂

I didn't wanna make individual comments for this but did want to comment my stupid reaction when I was hearing you talk about that epic thing Yoshi did. 11:33 Ooh nice. 11:41 ooh fancy, not just like bare aluminum. 11:44 no fucking way, .. is he gone say what I think he is? 12:05 broooo let's go! That's amazing man! Mad props. (Oh, and 12:20, sounds like an opening ska/sound-making version of Bodies by Drowning Pool, or maybe the intro bit to Psychosocial or some Slipknot opening?)

I had to go back and rewatch that segment so I could live your comments in real time 😂 But yea, Yoshi is the truth! Such good people 🤘🏻

Unicam engine. Also unless there is 100% a creditable post of someone doing something like this successfully with detailed info, this is absolutely something you don't do without looking at timing of the lobes. You can, and will, cause valve interference with either the valves themselves or the piston.

I tried doing this, there is a third jet type of nozzle that has a spring in it which I confused with the pilot jet and took it out. Spring flew out but I put everything back together and now its acting out. Any ideas if that third jet/nozzle needs adjustment?

I failed to put back in the accelerator nozzle 😅

lovely little town, what is it? Good work on your bike. I'd like to do something like it on my KLX230. But it has no carb, it's EFI.
@tristan65095 ай бұрын
you'll need an aftermarket ECU and an ECU remap which can be pretty expensive.

Advise, ALWAYS, ALWAYS place a "WHITE" hand towel and place underneath the carberator so you dont loose any screws or in your case, "JETs". !!!!!!!!! Give it a quick squrit of carberator before you button things up bro. 😊

Question I’m super interested in this bike but I’m about 6’4 and over 300 lbs would this be a good beginner bike for me because I don’t want to put out a lot on my first bike
@AliasTekTV9 ай бұрын
I would look into a 250/300. These are really small bikes for your frame. You'll know when you look at one in a dealer.

Anyone else have the problem it won’t start on full choke if it’s cold unless you rev and hold it but when you let off it just dies

That is kind of how you are supposed to use choke if you read the manuals

The size of that air filter and scoops is much larger than the air pick up inside and its such a small engine, i don't think that will do anything to help power.

Looks good for now, but I trust the Honda engineers and if they put things on the bike they probably are needed. But if you stay on pavement forever maybe not.

i would never attempt this job as I am not mechanical at all. Nothing goes smoothly when I take things apart but I know the names of some simple tools. That little screw driver you attribute to IKEA is called an offset screwdriver. I am not trying to be a smarty pants becasue that is the only thing I knew about this whole thing. I just thought this bit of info might be helpful to you in the future. Peace fromConnecticut.
