Today’s case is one of the most polarising and controversial ones we’ve looked into.
In 2010, Anni Dewani and her new husband Shrien, set off on their 10 day honeymoon to South Africa. What started off as a picture perfect holiday, soon turned into a nightmare when Anni was kidnapped and killed. Soon, everyone involved would be pointing the finger at each other, leaving the events of what happened that night…still being questioned to this day.
UPDATE: One of the men convicted in her murder in 2010, Zola Tongo - the taxi driver on the night - has been granted parole. (March 2022)
According to a report in The South African:
“Tongo has a string of conditions to adhere to, as part of his parole.
• Tongo has to find work
• He is also not free to roam around as he pleased and will be placed under house detention
• Tongo must also undergo social work and psychological treatment while on parole
• He is barred from using or trading in any alcohol or drugs and can be subjected to random substance and drug tests”

Wow -- he completely got away with murder. The fact that: a) Both the husband and the driver said it was "her idea" to go through the bad part of town at night (same storyline). b) The phone call captured on recording of one of the killers on the phone at the hotel saying the guy is in a rush and wants it done tonight. c) The husband meeting up with the driver the next day w/ husband looking directly at the camera (and immediately realizing his mistake) just as the driver said he did. d) They only killed the wife but let the husband out unscathed. ...all that seals it for me that the husband planned the murder. I hope one day they can retry him and find him guilty, but that seems doubtful. You can see how loved she was by her family. Such a sad and senseless crime.

it struck me as odd too.. being as wealthy and prone to display that wealth as he was, the choice to opt for a shuttle service over a trusted taxi service provided for by the hotel seems extremely strange.. and even more so when there are township tours arranged by trusted companies who could've taken them to see the townships if they really wanted to. I'm sure if he'd asked, they would have told him as much but it does seem very weird that someone that well off and smart would have willingly put himself and his new wife into a situation like that in a country he didn't know. Maybe he was trusting, but most wealthy businessmen are more savvy than that and know when a situation requires more caution. I don't know but its odd to me.

As a South African, it's hard to relay the anger and frustration at the lack of justice in this case.
@avelakhoza6140

There is lack of Justice in most cases here in SA, especially for well off people who can afford a competent Lawyer. I think they should improve skills of the prosecutors. When I watch the level of Investigation for international cases, you notice that they kind of leave no stone unturned. I am a fan of 48hrs, it's amazing that even the smallest detail can change the case. They should have trained the Star witness on how to answer questions as well, given that they had access into the statement he gave before vs what he told later. I blame incompetency. They couldn't even trace his cell phone, with regards to where it pinned last. Thats something that should have been seized from the beginning. Also, they were supposed to rule out the husband as a suspect, before he even jumped into that plane.

Honestly, you never know what it's going on inside a person's mind. We were organising our honeymoon after almost 2 years of being married. Before and during the pandemic, I realised that I wasn't happy and I started asking for divorce. My strange husband would convince to keep on trying and not to give up on us, which I agreed many times with the condition of him seeing a therapist for his mental health. Things got worse and when I finally sent an email to the courthouse, the police knocked the door looking for me. It turned out that every time I have been asking him for divorce, he was reporting me to the police claiming that I was an abusive, alcoholic, always high on marihuana and I tried to kill him with a knife. I was speechless. All those reports happened while we were planning our honeymoon, hoping that going on a trip would improve things. Can you imagine what would have happened if we went on that trip together? He planned all with his beloved mother.

The saddest conclusion to this is he basically had Anni killed to cover up his true sexual preference yet ultimately came out and confessed to the courts in a media sensationalized case for the world to see that he indeed is bisexual. So basically he had her killed for nothing. She lost her life for the truth to come out in an even bigger way than it would have if he had just privately broken things off and admitted it. SMH 🤦🏻‍♀️ what a shame!!

The fact that he would not have sex with his partner, before marriage, but then discovered he had a gay sex partner, would ring bells for me, he was so paranoid his family would find out he was Gay, I believe he would have done anything to cover his sexuality. The fact he had a pizza party the evening before his Wife's funeral is appalling, I mean losing your wife is bad enough, but losing her in this way, is something many would not recover from. I understand he became extremely ill, but I think this was because he then understood he was not getting away with it so easily. I also believe the fact that his family was extremely rich allowed them to assist in securing his freedom. The Police and Courts had a simple question to answer, what did they ( the thieves ) have to gain by killing her ?. Absolutely nothing,.They could have stolen the jewelry, money, and left them both in the car, no rape took place, so why kill her and not her husband. I feel very sad for Annie's family, not being able to see justice for their daughter, would not bring her back but may have brought them a little closer.

As a resident from Cape Town, nothing made sense, especially allowing tourists to go to Gugulethu, day or night time, especially not night time. In all my years of living in Cape Town, I've NEVER even been to Gugs because of how dangerous it is. It was heartbreaking to watch Anni's dad cry. Her family but especially her dad. I prayed and I cried for Anni and for her family. We knew Shrien was guilty. He was and is and he will get his day. Shrien is not welcome here in South Africa. Our people will take justice into their hands. Up until today we still hold this against him.

If everyone knows how dangerous it is, why hasn’t the government cleaned it up? Or is it because it was a colony (sorry if I’m getting the history completely mixed up here) of Britain and you guys also inherited their shit sentencing laws? I’m from Canada so I know the frustration of having a “justice system” derived from the British system. It doesn’t sentence criminals harshly enough so they’re back on the streets in no time. It’s common here for a murderer to get 15 years, be out in 9-10. Our systems are wayyy too lax.

My dad used to work and live with Anni's father in Sweden for over 10 years so I spent a lot of my early childhood with the family. I have faint memories of Anni but I've always known that Vinod was, and is the strongest, most wonderful and kindhearted father! He was like a funny uncle to me. It breaks my heart that someone you and your family know so well has gone through something this horrible.

We need to teach girls that getting married is not the ultimate achievement in life. If it happens that you meet the right person, great but more than often it's not the right person and women are consciously or subconsciously forced to get married. She would have been better way off on her own for the rest of her life if necessary than getting married to someone who didn't deserve her. By the way, man's status means nothing if he's an AH.

She would have been blessed to have lived with her birth family as a single woman all her days, as she was obviously very much loved by them. When I watched this, it was plain to see how loved she was. Not everyone is so loved by their birth family. Anni wanted children. I'm sorry she was so cruelly taken in, used, and murdered by the man she put her faith in. It is as if he had no regard for her life or her family. Has he a conscience?

Feel so sad for Anni and her family. So much evidence that he was involved. The biggest one for me is that the killers let him get out of the car and drove off with only her. She wasn’t sexually abused so what was their motive? If they wanted to hold her ransom, then why not him too?. He went to trial and his defence team deliberately confused the defendants so they could say they were contradicting themselves and he would be let off, and they looked like the liars. So the judge didn’t allow his sexuality to be part of the trial, but it proves he is a liar. He lied about being gay and married her on false pretences. Anni and her family will get justice one day.

Unfortunately the justice system is corrupt (loopholes & most likely pay offs to the judge&lawyers) & allows things like this to happen sadly. Plus it’s very ironic the supposed gay boyfriend commits suicide while the case goes on.. Lastly I could be clutching at straws here but the guy who pulled the trigger dies in jail, really? It is hard to believe yes brain tumour but doesn’t sit right as he knew the truth. Not to mention the motel receptionist walks free & husband is just disturbing. I feel so sorry for Anni & her family. RIP

I don’t know if the judge was bribed or not but I’m amazed that being a girl herself she freed the husband of all criminal charges. It is 100% certain from all the circumstantial evidence that the husband was the murderer. Shame on the judge and shame on the judiciary system for proving again that money can buy everything.

This is such a sad case. The prosecution didn't have anything concrete, there was no evidence connecting him without a reasonable doubt. They were grabbing at straws with him protecting his sexuality as a motive. Nothing linked Shrien to the murder directly. They just didn't have enough, it was circumstantial, and so he walked free. Really sad. God will deal with him. Btw, I'm Indian. Finding a rich man and getting married or being in the closest for fear of being disowned and shamed is not Indian-specific, last time I checked.
