As a South African I have to resist the urge to type a thesis about this case, so I'll just thank you for always being so objective. I usually tell prospective visitors, "Come to South Africa! Probably because they are not used to life in third world countries. This scheme is very common. Tourist get kidnapped all the time and it usually involves a taxi driver who heard them speak english in the car.

I doubt any murderer is stupid enough to pay the contract killer money in public. It however is much more likely that the husband believes the driver to also be the victim of the crime and paid what he promised - R 1000 to drop them at the hotel.

As a British immigrant living years in beautiful South Africa, a few points: 1. South Africa has a terrible reputation in the UK, if a Brit was looking for somewhere to kill someone it would be an easy/lazy choice - you know the press will back you; 2. SA is not like much of Europe/USA ,you do not simply stumble upon the 'bad' bits of town, it is blindingly obvious if you are heading the 'wrong' way; 3. contrary to Dr Grande's opinion SA criminal's have no issue just killing you to rob you -its not like the 'west', no-one is pushed out the car, if they have a gun you get shot first, robbed after. If you're pushed out the car its because you paid for that privilege.

Well said. My Auntie lived in Johannesburg for years and we visited many times. I couldn't have said it better myself. It is blindingly obvious where the "dodgy" areas are and thieves really don't give 2 fucks about killing you. There's no way in hell they would have let Shrien out of that car, he's a witness and they wouldn't have let him go so he could point them out to police! They are beyond ruthless and it's not personal, it's about money and self preservation. The probability that Shrien was involved is so high it's just that the police made a cock up of everything and are as corrupt as hell. Well said!

I am from Cape Town and followed this case like I follow you Dr Grande. Day to day. This guy had his wife killed. How he got away with this murder is one of our lowest moments in SA courts. Her family was devastated and SA police and justice system failed them miserably. Rip Anni your life was taken to cover your husbands double life.

I think it is very possible he was guilty. The marriage was a perfect cover for his traditional family. The murder was a way for him to save face and continue the life he truly desired and also kept him single for a long time due to his "fake" grief. He could have hid the ring in the cab to recover it later since the crime was staged.

I recall this case. The gun was found in the van, they fought frequently and the husband met multiple times with the driver. He said his wife wanted to see the dodgy areas even though her friends and family said she would never suggest such a thing. The gunshot wound was consistent with a purpose for killing her. Everyone investigating the crime is sure the husband did it.

There's no convincing me the husband wasn't guilty. I believe he felt being a widower was more palatable and made him look better than admitting he was gay. At best, his behaviour before and after the murder of his new wife was questionable, and he showed no sign of trauma. Even if he wasn't in love with her, surely the horror of the murder would have some emotional impact on him? He was only interested in himself. Guilty as, in my opinion.

I still remember this case so vividly, and couldn't understand why the husband would take her to Nyanga of all places (yes, that is one of the most dangerous places in the country). I am from Cape Town and two things struck me as strange, The husband travelled to Cape Town to hire men to kill his wife, when he could easily just have divorced her? He did his best to avoid his time in court and by some miracle wasn't convicted. By the way, her killers did sexually assault her far as I can tell from the initial reports brother. Capetonian here, If you stay in the "tourist" areas you are going to be perfectly safe - they are well protected with private security and police. The outlying shantytowns known as "townships" are where things can get dodgy if you are a foreigner standing out.

It's reported that Anni wanted to see all of Cape Town, even the bad and seedy parts so Shrien got the taxi driver to take them to the bad parts of town. 1400 GBP is close to R30 000 (South African Rands). Taxi drivers in South Africa earn around R3500 per month. Owners of minibus taxis earn around R25000 per month, which is considered an above average income for a South African. To put it into perspective, you can buy a second hand car for R30 000 in South Africa and police officers earn around R10 000 per month in our country. Thus, R30 000 / 1400 GBP is considered a relatively large sum of money. We have heard about "murder for hire plots" in South Africa for +-R6000. So please, don't think that the money is too little for the deed that was commited. Criminals have done more for less in South Africa. It is also very obvious where the dangerous areas are. I doubt that they went there by mistake.

I remember the case very well as I live in Cape Town. Shrien Dewani was acquitted because of bungling on the part of the police and the unreliability of the witnesses. We have a shockingly high crime rate in South Africa, and several notorious murders have taken place in the past decade, by intimate partners and family members, purporting to be the result of random carjacking, robbery, etc. It is not a stretch to believe that Dewani was likewise ridding himself of his wife with hired assistance, and keeping his double life secret.

The taxi driver angle alone doesnt prove he was guilty unless the phone calls and texts are suspicious. Lots of tourists do hire one taxi driver for the whole day or week and arrange an itinerary prior to the trip. He might have gotten the contact details for the taxi driver from a friend or relative who visited south africa in the past.

As a South African, we sadly know many shot or stabbed for a cellphone or a couple of Rands. In this case, it's blindingly obvious what happened here, and Dewani literally got away with murder. It doesn't help that we have one of the most corrupt societies in the world, some of the police cannot read or write or drive, and are lazy to boot and life is cheap. Dockets lost or "lost", bribery is common, as is contamination of crime scenes. Trying to get the police to even open a docket for theft or domestic violence is a mission. This beautiful woman did not deserve the lack of justice she received.

While this just looks like a horrible accident, it's quite possible that the husband was referred to the taxi driver before he even got to South Africa, which is how and why he met with him so many times. It's easily for all this to have been arranged before they even stepped foot in South Africa. Indians aren't clueless about dangerous parts of towns and they're definitely aren't going to ask to be driven there for sightseeing, and I don't believe they would have pushed him out of the car and kept his wife. I know the world has become more dangerous, but '91, I traveled to Egypt and we hired a cab driver to be our tour guide for a number of days, he took us to many sites before the tourists got there and we paid off the guards to let us in, we even met some of the locals and hung out with them. Each evening we paid him in cash because these guys want their money, they're not going to wait a period of days to be paid when people could easily take off and leave them hanging. Anyway, he did what we paid him to do. The fact that the husband's story kept changing just like the others makes him suspect.

Every person I meet from South Africa tells me it is safe, you just have to stay away from the bad areas. When I ask if they have ever been a victim of a crime, they usually list a whole slew of offences - house break-ins, car thefts, carjackings, muggings, assault, and they often know people who have been victims of sexual assault or murder. Not an ideal place for a honeymoon.

I have heard of South Africans visiting home being very aware of who follows you from the airport. Your luggage, passport are valuable to them. To be safe, don’t go straight home from the airport. Drive to a shopping mall first to make sure no one is following you, then head home. Sadly, these are things people do. It can already start as an inside job at the airport...going through customs...they know who has the goods ....call their contacts outside the airport with a description of your appearance, possessions you carry, your destination, address etc...their buddies are waiting follow you home.

I have lived in Durban S.A before. I was in my 20s and I am Canadian. As a white foreigner I had to learn quickly- no jewelry in public - no watches - no phones 📵- no purse - the hardest was keeping quiet 🤐 all the time in public. I have a Canadian accent but most would think American in that area. That posed a large concern as some dislike Americans and/or they can view you as a potential hostage for cash from North America. It was a wonderful experience living there in other ways! The people were friendly and kind.

Thank you, Dr, Grande for your analysis of the Anni Dewani case. I think that Shireen Dewani made a mistake when he hired a random taxi driver as a tour guide. South Africa has many accredited tour guides. An internet search would have put him in contact with a reputable professional who would never have recommended a nighttime tour of a dodgy township. According to Stats SA 15,8 million tourists visited South Africa in 2019 and not one of them died violently. South Africa is an incredible country to visit and as long as you listen to your tour guide you will have a wonderful holiday.

I'm curious I saw a documentary that explained there are road kidnappings 2x a week all across Africa. It is usually a kidnapping for money. Sometimes the person comes out dead even if ransom is paid. I would think this couple looking very rich were kidnapped with intention maybe to ransom the woman. By making contact with her husband later but she tried escape or posed a threat so they killed her. That or the husband was in corporation.

I've heard this story so many times and, although the killers come across as liars who are not credible and the police seem as corrupt as hell, I can't help but get the feeling Shrien is somehow involved. Maybe it's because officers made such a cock up of the investigation and you never get a clear sense of what actually happened. I rarely disagree with Dr Grande, he tends to come to his conclusions in a reasonable, logical manner and examines the evidence fairly, but in this case I DO disagree. I wouldn't have convicted Shrien though, there's too much doubt and not enough valid evidence pointing to his guilt.

This still does not explain why he would allow to be driven around in an area known to be dangerous that even locals avoid. As a tourist you do your homework. He was seen on cctv handing the driver a package. Personally I think he was involved. He was living a double life. I think she found out about it and he was afraid his secrets would be exposed. The court did not find that he was innocent, the court said it could not rely on the evidence given by three witnesses who themselves had been convicted of the crime. The states case was weak. If the police were so incompetent how come they arrested the accused so quickly. I think the judge was remiss in not letting the husband testify and give his version. The case should not have been thrown out.

As to the outcome, I suspect that he had something to do with this but I agree with the judge that the police did not make a case. The police did a great job of explaining how he would have hypothetically had a motive and how potentially he could have been involved, but they did not have any other evidence. I understand why people were mad at the judge, but I think the judge ended up making the right decision. And that stinks, because I don't think he is innocent.

It's not that unusual to hire a taxi for a whole day of sight-seeing. My Mom and I did the same thing in London. We paid the driver a flat rate for the whole day and he acted as our tour guide to all the major sites.

I'm surprised, Dr. Grande, that you came to this conclusion... Usually I do find your videos to be pretty well-researched and objective. However, here, I believe you may have overlooked the video footage from the hotel of the husband and the driver. At one point, the husband is walking into some sort of conference room in the hotel with a large white envelope. The driver happens to walk into the same conference room. The husband leaves without the envelope. Moments later, the driver leaves with the envelope. I'm not saying that this is definitive proof of anything, but it sure does add context. There were also shady text messages between the husband and the driver all throughout the ride, because the "car jackers" were late, and he seemed to be getting impatient. Also, I'm pretty sure living a double life is one of the first signs of disrespect in a relationship, let alone grounds for concern when the duped partner has been found shot dead on vacation while randomly perusing the ghetto while on said "vacation"...Idk, either way, I think this video deserves an edit. I mean that in the most constructive way possible, because I really do enjoy your videos. I just think this one is NOT a good representation of your channel.

Texting the taxi driver while being a passenger of said taxi? Instead of talking to him? That's just not a thing. It does not happen. Even disregarding the content of said texts this behaviour stands out as strange and uncalled for. When in a taxi, commonly driven by a stranger in an unknown area people might be sensitive to signs of the unexpected. If the taxi driver was to fiddle with his phone while driving some customers might question his competence. Whether voiced or not. sentiments like "We pay for this service you know, eyes on the road man!" might arise. What you'd not expect is for a passenger to text the driver and give him a reason to fiddle with his phone while driving. Certainly if one aspires to tell the story of what really happened one would have to supply a great explanation for why the husband texted the driver. If the husband plotted with the driver to kill the wife, well, that would explain it. But if one like Dr. Grande believes there was no conspiracy, then of course another explanation for this bizarre behaviour would have to be found.

Why not just pay him out in the open? I imagine that if I were on vacation and had to pay a driver for his work throughout the week, I would likely meet the driver at the front of the hotel where he would probably pull up in his car, and hand him the envelope, thank him, and go back inside, and he would likely drive away... right? Who would walk into a conference room inside the hotel alone, wait for the driver to park and walk into the hotel, find the conference room, and pick up the envelope from there, as if they're not meant to be seen together? And yes, there were texts implicating conversation between the husband and the driver... if I remember correctly, the context was along the lines of "where are they" because the other two men involved in the plot (the ones with the guns) were late so the driver had to keep driving around and it was starting to look suspicious... there are other videos about this exchange on KZbin, but I don't know how to link them here. Also ma'am/sir, I'm not attacking you personally, nor am I attacking Dr. Grande, so please show me the same respect... or don't, but then understand that this kind of interaction, where we cannot share our opinions freely without being personally attacked, is why we as a society are so divided! This is the first time I have to disagree with you Dr grande. I get that people have certain mindset about Africa but there's no way her husband wasn't involved in the murder. The fourth person who was never been able to identify hold the key to the mystery of how the taxi driver and the husband get entangled despite not having any communication prior to their visit to south Africa. -How can anyone explain when after the wife was killed shirien was talking to tango on the phone and he told him that there's is a CCTV camera and he looked up immediately? -What would make a grieving husband be wary of CCTV camera? -What sort of closeness could make shirien and the driver share that they would be exchanging text messages while they were in the same vehicle? -Also it's not uncommon or unheard of that killers for hire don't implicate those who hire them immediately, why is it different in this case then? And most importantly,what was even the motive for the highjacking in the first place when they didn't demand money nor took the car? How does it make any sense to highjack a car to the point of killing someone only for you to abandon it when it could have easily be lost and never found again considering the area where the incident happened?

As a South African I remember this case well. Initially I was convinced that he was guilty, but later I had my doubts. My main concern is the perverse incentives set up by the way plea bargains work in South Africa. Basically, if you can give the police a bigger fish then you can get a lighter sentence. There have been multiple cases where the perpetrators have concocted stories about "hits made to look like an unrelated crime" in order to lighten their sentences.

I agree with most replies on here that it is hard to believe the husband wasn’t involved. Without coming across as being biased, consider that this was a wealthy Indian couple who had a traditional lavish wedding and then went on honeymoon, staying in a luxury safari camp in Kruger national park then headed to a 5 star hotel. The day they were high jacked they went to a restaurant overlooking the water, passing smaller restaurants on the way. This doesn’t match with her husband’s account that she wanted to visit local and potentially dangerous neighborhoods and no reputable taxi driver would be ok with driving them there without concern when they supposedly had money and jewelry on them. Im also sure the 5 star hotel would’ve had taxi service available to them and this just doesn’t add up to what I envision she would want for her honeymoon. Also, it would make more sense to shoot him than to shoot her as she was no threat to three men. I think when the three men realized they were facing life in prison and Dewani was going to walk free, they exposed him.

You forgot to mention that Shrien had a lover in Australia who was waiting for him!! For some ppl best to kill the spouse - no alimony to pay. The shame on the family!! The prosecutor were either negligent or just cd’nt prove their case - shrien in my view so killed his wife. There is karma if all else fails

I've never been to SA but I know quite a bit about its history. I vividly remember some years ago a friend of mine here in the UK, an older hippie type woman, who visited some relatives there. When I asked what it was like I maybe expected some kind of enthusiasm about seeing a different culture, people or whatever. However what she did was just shake her head and say very little. It's was as if she'd seen a ghost. I'll never forget it.

I don’t want to sound moralistic, but I felt that you were a bit too scathing of Anni in your description of her wanting to get married. Also, and respectfully, I believe if you had done more research into this case you’d find Srien Dewani’s behaviour suspicious beyond belief. I can’t quite understand how you were able to overlook the strange meetings with the driver, and I believe you glanced over the fact that he texted the driver while they were in the car together.

Mixed feelings on this analysis. Dr Grande was thorough and objective as always. Still, most South Africans, me included, believe the mastermind got away. Policing and prosecution left much to be desired, still, Shrien's behaviour is hard to reconcile with an innocent victim. At the very least he was an extremely irresponsible, careless, deceitful husband.
