I listened twice - and stopped and rewound. And I got it on the second read! DUDE!!!!!

Ms. Jackson takes a normal situation and twists it and twists it until you can't look at anything normal anymore without wondering....

Oh she’s good! Reminds me of another of hers: The Daemon Lover. The subtle unspoken menace draped in everyday actions. Actually, The Lottery was like that too. Soooo good!

This made my brain absolutely scream wanting to know what would happen. She's so good at building tension

Thank you WNS, I love Shirley Jackson's unsettling stories. She, in a way, winnows readers/people. It takes a certain type to fall back into her basket and not blow away on the free wind. The rest of us become grist for her mill.

Many times a second listen will clarify matters; going to do that right now! (Hint: it is what you think it is.)

Tragic, that a young woman would resign her life to death-by-husband.
@marniekilbourne60811 ай бұрын
Odd that a woman who wanted to die would just happen to meet and marry a serial killer so he could kill her.

Have no idea what happened at the end. Someone please explain. I’m usually not this dense.

I have an idea, but she sure does make you think!

It's s rather ambiguous end but it appears she has married a murderer and wonders how long before he murders her too.

Hee husband is a serial killer and she’s well aware of it but is so apathetic and lost in her life that she doesn’t care and is almost looking forward to it. She knows he’s going to kill her and isn’t going to fight it.

If Shirley had to explain the ending then she didn’t do her job! Great little tale.

Kind of a late answer but the lady married a serial killer. She doesn't care about life and is passively waiting for her turn.😬
