HK indigenous here. The volunteer's idea of the solution is all well and good. But the word she didn't use is "land reform". That is what HK desperately needs. But China cannot land reform HK, as it's one country two systems. That said, even after 2047, it's still questionable as to whether China can land reform HK without upsetting majority of HK people, as a large proportion of them do own their own property and would no doubt be financially impacted by a reform. The ridiculous housing price is unfortunately a legacy of the housing system the British left behind, so it's a bit ironic that Gilly likes the Royal family as well. Let us not forget that the London appointed governor and all the rich British expats were all living up in Victoria peak mid level, where they comfortably look down on the diametrically opposed infamous kowloon walled city which was just a symptom of such a system coupled with the prejudice Chinese faced under colonial ruling. This is not a comment against the British people. I am just about old enough to remember that the British public played a key role in abolishment of apartheid south Africa and it was also the British people that marched the streets against Iraq war. It was just unfortunate that the ruling elites of Britain ignored such voices.

Thank you for shedding light on the underbelly of Hong Kong. They are currently trying to introduce a bill to increase the minimum required living space and crack down on subdivided flats. With that being said there’s actually so much more of Hong Kong to see. As an indigenous villager in Hong Kong, I'd actually like to invite you to visit the New Territories to explore some of our villages and traditional customs and festivals! Notes: A big issue with reform here is that the government makes most of its revenue in land sales and land tax. Therefore, the government has a vested interest in keeping the supply of land and housing limited to inflate the cost of land. Roughly 70% of Hong Kong's land is undeveloped or protected or classified under different usage zones Take it however you want but there have been several indicators from the Mainland that there is no real intention to alter the one country two system model after 2047 as it actually benefits both the mainland and Hong Kong to keep a level of distinction between the jurisdictions. Every city changes but as long as the heart is the same that’s all that matters. Just my two cents from living and growing up here in HK Final note: Been following your channel for a few months now especially for the China series and I got to say it’s some of the best China coverage I’ve seen. It’s honestly such a refreshing take. Keep it up and keep it real!

I used to summer with my dad in Guangzhou, but I would always arrive first in Hong Kong. After a long flight in, I'd spend the night at the Chungking Mansions; watching this video, I nearly felt like I was there again-good memories. I think it's great that you're highlighting the challenges Hong Kong is currently facing. I remember learning about the Umbrella Movement while I was there and witnessing symbols of their resistance around the city. My heart goes out to Hong Kong as they continue to fight for their independence. Side note, here's an interesting story if you've got the time: There is a train that takes you from Hong Kong to the border, and another train from there to Guangzhou. This one time, my dad and I crossed the border quite late and missed the last train inland. We were going to have to wait outside until the morning train arrived when we were approached by this Chinese gentleman who offered us a bus ride. As I remember it, we had to walk quite a long way from the border to an industrial complex where our bus awaited us. The driver then took our luggage and hid it in a compartment underneath the bus along with the bags belonging to everyone else onboard - a little strange. Then we got going, and mind you, it's a 2-hour long train ride, but our bus ride took us on an 8-hour detour... Our journey was nothing short of surreal as we drove through metropolis-sized cities that were entirely abandoned and seemingly so for quite some time. Driving through these ghost towns, it became clear rather quickly that our peers had very little interest in crossing paths with the Chinese government and were likely illegally traveling back and forth between mainland China and Hong Kong. We made it to Guangzhou undisturbed but looking back, it was certainly a surreal experience and something that I'll remember for the rest of my life.

I was in Hong Kong for 2 weeks in November 2019 - probably one of the weirdest experiences considering the protests and riots against the police. There were road blocks and riot police on the streets. However what a trip, the people were so kind, they didn’t have a problem with me as a tourist - and treated me with lots of respect. The culture and food was amazing and for such a small place has so many things to do and see, highlight of the trip was going down to Stanley - such a contrast to the city down there, life is a bit slower and the scenery is wonderful.

Pretty good how quickly you got into the vibe of the city in such a short time. Hong Kong is already just an empty shell compared to how it was. At the end, you were at one point very close to the beach - maybe an hour or so walk and then you went in totally the wrong direction. In the end the point you reached was indeed one of the best places to overlook Shenzhen and better than if you had continued on your original route. The installation was once occupied by the British army and the round building was a lookout against incursions from mainland China. There used to be bullet proof glass in the windows and there is a mounting point for a machine gun. At night time during clear weather the view is even more spectacular.

Mike, I was born, educated and worked in Hong Kong for nearly 70 years. Yes, you show the other side of Hong Kong but I can assure you that the housing conditions here have been improving eversince the British rule. In the old days, not only individuals, a whole family with parents and kids had to cram in tiny rooms and a window for fresh air was already a luxurious bonus for those who can pay more. Quite often, individuals had to live in three tiers "cage" bunk beds and air conditioning is a rare word in their dictionary. Those were the days and we won't blame the British nor the Hong Kong government because Hong Kong were flooded with immigrants from the mainland and elsewhere all the time and even now. But one thing for sure, Hong Kong will not lose its luster because of its unique position including a free port, free currency in and out and the only common law region in China. Hong Kong is a hub as well as a bridge for business with China. How will Hong Kong disappear, if China is racing to become the world largest economy ? I like your videos, Mike because you tell true stories.

Hong Kong was returned to China under the Joint Declaration Treaty, I encourage you and anyone else who believes recent changes broke handover commitments to read the (short) treaty for yourself and not rely on the media. The British had no leverage when the treaty was negotiated as ~93% of HK's land was set to be unconditionally returned in 1997 when the 100 year lease expired which would threaten British investments and business interests. The few terms in the treaty protected British financial interests, it'd be practically impossible for China violate the treaty. The right to protest remains, just advocating or speaking out for independence is illegal.

Westerners only missed the British colonised version of Hong-Kong. Cos, they could do almost anything and get away with it. The Hong-Kongers weren't even given the rights to vote to elect the Governor of Hong-Kong from 1841-42 - 1997. Only the UK government in England had that privilege. So, they will always have control. The only place the Hong-Kongers was allowed to vote was at the municipal level. So! Yeah! We the Chinese people disagree with you on thus one. Mike. OKAY. Also, The British Museum of Stolen Ancient Artifacts & Antiques should return every single piece of historic Chinese Artifacts & Antiques that they looted. After the poms destroyed China with Opium. So! Sorry, not sorry that we don't miss you lot one bit! You can do your own research. If you want to know about the good stuff that the Hong-Kongers are going to benefit from what the Chinese government has planned for Hong-Kong through the Hong-Kong government. Such as building affordable housing, guaranteed basic universal healthcare, free education for those that can't afford to pay from kindergarten to year 6 and more.

Of the 7 million Honkong residents today, around 2 million are already recent immigrants from Mainland China, mostly from the neighboring Guangdong province where the people also speak Cantonese. By 2047 the border will be removed and Mainland Chinese residents will be able to move to Hong Kong freely and unrestricted (just like Hongkongers already can to Mainland China). It's also worth noting that neighboring Shenzhen's GDP is now higher than Hongkong's by over a hundred billions dollars, and Shenzhen's GDP keeps having double digit growth while Hongkong's is somewhat sluggish. I don't see any other future for Hongkong than becoming just another fully integrated Chinese city, probably of a lower tier than Shenzhen. It had its glory days.

The government of mainland China originally negotiated with the British to govern Hong Kong as one country, two systems. That is to say, Hong Kong can retain most of the former British-Hong Kong systems and laws, and can develop European and American model capitalism. The central government will only intervene in Hong Kong when riots occur in Hong Kong or the SAR government requests intervention. However, thirty years have passed, and everyone has seen the proliferation of British and American capitalism and neoliberalism, and Hong Kong has degenerated into an oligarchy. Therefore, many middle and lower classes in Hong Kong are now living in poverty and cannot be compared with the mainland at all. In addition, the British and American have interferried Hong Kong in recent years, hyping up the color revolution, it is now foreseeable that Hong Kong is in decline, and the function of the financial center may be completely replaced by Shanghai. The British government has huge economic and political interests in Hong Kong. However, in recent years, the UK has catered to the United States and done many things that have harmed its core interests, such as cooperating with the United States to cause trouble in Hong Kong. The consequence now is that the UK has lost its important interests in Hong Kong. , this will make the already depressed British Isles even worse in the future.

china is the biggest loser here. they need hong kong much more than you think the west does. why? because hong kong was a trading hub, and a window to the world as an english-speaking intermediate capable of interpreting for china. now that HK is relegated to a tier3 city, its really not a surprise that China is failing to sell its EV cars and failing to meet its 5-year targets. big factory is nice, but without sales people it's utterly useless.
@@伊小泽-t5d again, you think the only important thing is industry, but China's industry has also weakened. There's no reason for countries to invest in expensive Chinese manufacturing when Vietnam also has ports, and better conditions for trade. See how that works? Nobody wants to deal with Guangzhou, nobody speaks english there and we're not welcome, so there's other places.
Mike we love the content bro. Only problem is we can’t get enough. Keep up the good work. Remain genuine and don’t get into too much trouble. Safe travels my brother.

With respect. The only thing you have shown is how little you know about Hong Kong. As a Brit, and there are many of us, living here since the 80s HK has improved significantly from social awareness programmes to opportunities and standards of living. Other than the public housing schemes, the colonial government largely ignored the status quo of poorer demographics. I'll wager that you were not here in 2019, were not a victim of the mobs, daily fears such as putting your child on a train and hoping it wasn't going to be fireballed or derailed by some deluded idiots, your car attacked by stick welding mobs smashing up road furniture, ... all funded by 'not so mysterious' cash cows, I was. Why is the other half of the story, the truth, our side, the people's ignored[?] Subjective reporting about HK is commonplace these days. I left the UK as I could see what it would eventually turn into. A country that has become irrevocably politically corrupt, where social programmes are moving backwards and where poverty is on the rise? How about reporting that instead?

What a brilliant video buddy, much better than most on TV. Enjoyed every minute of it. I felt so much for the people living in those very cramped conditions. I visited Hong Kong away back in the early 90s and it will always have a special place in my heart. The people are lovely and I hope come 2047 things work out for them. 🙏🙏🙏

Having lived in Hong Kong for over five years, I have never witnessed this aspect of the city. While it appears to be an ideal place for the wealthy, the stark wealth gap makes life exceedingly difficult for those in poverty.
