The Bijlmermeer, or colloquially Bijlmer, is one of the neighbourhoods that form the Amsterdam-Zuidoost borough of Amsterdam, Netherlands. To many people, the Bijlmer designation is used to refer to Amsterdam Zuidoost as a pars pro toto

I grew up in the Bijlmer in the 90s. It was so unsafe that there were no taxis because they were often robbed. Everything changed in 1992 when a Boeing 747 from El Al crashed into the Bijlmer. Most of the victims were African migrants, many of whom were illegal. Bijlmer was given a face for Dutch society for the first time. The municipality of Amsterdam then decided to modernize the Bijlmer, such as knocking down the many high-rise apartment buildings that attracted poor residents and migrants. But the construction of the new Ajax Stadium in 1996 also attracted many (bank) head offices around the stadium, such as ING, ABN Amro, Deutsche Bank, etc. These offices in turn attracted wealthier (white) residents to the Bijlmer. In addition, the new stadium also attracted many concert and event halls. The Bijlmer district has become a city in itself.

In the late eighties and early nineties I used to shop in the Bijlmer Amsterdamse Poort shopping mall and then take the metro to go out in the city center. I live in a small town south of Amsterdam and always parked my car in the suburbs near metro station Strandvliet. It was one stop to station Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena. I never felt unsafe, not even when dark. But one time I couldn’t get a parking space near Strandvliet and drove to metro station Diemen Zuid (technically not part of Bijlmer, it is another municipality) and parked my car on the P+R parking lot. When I came back late in the evening when dark, it was very scary. Cars racing on the parking lot and making turns with high speeds, fire at oil drums, loud music out of gettoblasters, and only black men (I’m white) hanging around, smoking weed, talking loud etc. And I had to walk across the parking lot to my car. That was no fun. It was the only time I felt unsafe, even scared, in the Bijlmer. It had a bad name and probably for a good reason, but I, as a visitor and shopper, never experienced it but that one time. The subway was another matter, on both ends of a metro car there were always drug addicts making and taking their shots, with a cigarette lighter burning under a piece of aluminum foil to make the heroine liquid so they could put it in a syringe and take a shot. They could get aggressive, so if I was the only one in the metro car besides the addicts, I switched cars at the next station.

I grew up in Zuidoost in the 90's and those were different times, back then it truly was a ghetto, lots of junkies and crime going on, graffiti everywhere on the grey flats on the old subways and in the garages and even the cops avoided certain areas like Hoptille. But even then as a Dutch guy I never felt unsafe, you just had to know your way around the streetlife and in the end growing up there taught me a lot about all those different cultures living together. You can tell from this video the guy that's showing us around is proud of where he lives and he should be!

30, 40 years ago Bijlmer was a failed postwar modern (1960's modern) suburb experiment mainly inhabited by poor immigrants. Lots of drug related crime. About 20 years ago (starting after the Bijlmer-disaster plane crash) the area was successively completely rebuilt. The outdated, concrete mega-housing flats were largely torn down and replaced with row-houses and small scale appartment buildings. In various price ranges. This lead to a much more economically diverse population and a vibrant community. They also built the Ajax stadium there and cinemas and concert halls. I've been working in the area for 30 years and have witnessed the change from an area where most people would rather not be after dark, to a lively area.

Its more so how the rich and well off perceive these neighborhoods less to do with aesthetics. From the demographics you can tell its probably working class but more than that the ghetto is associated with high crime, high population density and an above average proportion who live off government welfare. Having said many former ghettos are getting gentrified and the rich are moving in. Its happened all over the US especially New York

The high rise buildings were not exclusively meant for middle class. Since donkeys days there has been a shortage of affordable and good quality housing in the Netherlands. It was and is mandatory to reserve a fairly large percentage of affordable housing in new developments. The people the high rise buildings was meant for missed their old neighborhoods and the rent was not as cheap as before. Long story short, new flats that stood empty for a large part. Suriname got full independence in 1975 and half of it's residence came over to the Netherlands. Now put two and two together, empty flats, influx of new people that got assigned to the Bijlmer. The newcomers had no or low income and were concentrated, well a perfect recipe for crime and that ghetto like reputation.

The Bijlmer started out wrong because it was build on the fiction that architercture could create a better society by putting people in flats with communal space surrounding it. Then half of the Surinames population came to the Netherlands over only a few years because Suriname was given independency, while there was a housing shortage and an economic crisis together with a heroine epidemic. That changed the already impopular Bijlmer into a ghetto in a very short time, and it took decades to repair. Suriname was indeed a colony. Ghana, Nigeria and Pakistan weren't though, so no idea how and why those people ended up there.

It was built as a new modern luxury neighbourhood once when Amsterdam ran out of space. Then a lot of people from Antilles, Suriname and African countries came there also a lot of poverty due to unequal chances in Life. Decades later i spent a few years in school there and had quite a nice time but a few blocks Down there were still regular shootings. Only ten years ago. During the day it was quiet and happy vibes though, haven't spent time there in the evenings as I didn't live there.

Billmer in the 90s was a playground for many Nigerians living around Amsterdam very diverse multicultural Netherlands Antilles surname, curaçao. Very thing you think of soft and hard drugs knife and gun crime everything exchange passport or whatever but all is now clean up by new housing development and raising the prices up.

Why Are People calling this nice Place a Getto. Please this is not a Getto it’s just a nice area in Amsterdam
@muncibedduSicilia
@muncibedduSicilia 5 күн бұрын
Neh, it used to be a terrible getto. While it was fun and laughter in the 90's when I used to live there it was also very dangerous after dark. There were a lot of heroin junkies, a lot of robberies. Taxi's only brought you until the garage, they wouldn't go in. The 'binnenstraat' (the hallway 'street' to get to the different elevators) was a place you didn't want to be, especially as a woman. Certain flats you didn't even want to walk underneath because the chance you would get a garbage bag or even a refrigarator on your head was pretty big. But during the daytime it was amazing.

I believe South Africa is the only African country that was colonised by the Dutch. Millions of the Dutch are still in that country, South Africa and they perpetuated apartheid back in the days, post the colonial era. When I visited South Africa, I found out that a large population of Afrikaners(Dutch settlers in South Africa who’ve now been there since 1652) and Coloured people speak a Dutch derivative language called Afrikaans, sounds and pretty much is 95% Dutch I believe but spelling and annunciation of some of the words has changed. This was fascinating

im Dutch i never had any problems in the Bijlmer, its a nice chill place. it doesn't even remotely looks like a ghetto. Thai is only good for the flavour it doesnt do anything. if this is a ghetto i know "slums" in Holland. there is another artist from the kingdom of the Netherlands who's quite popular...Ziggi Recado...dancehall/reggae music. Dutch house dj's are amongst the best of the world (personally house isnt my favorite music though)

Amsterdam hosts more nationalities than any other city in the world, but most visitors stay in the tourist area’s. Which is a shame because there’s so much more to experience and the public transportation gets you around easily. When my wife says let’s go to Amsterdam this is the place we go. Haven’t been in the tourist center for twenty years.

@hunchbackaudio Did you know about all of these "non-tourist" areas your first time there? I am sure you acquired knowledge over time. Tourists tend to stay in "tourist" areas because those are the areas marketed to them. Upon meeting locals, reading more about a country or watching great videos like this one we find out about these other areas. I plan to visit some "non-tourist" spots the next time I am able to visit. 😊
