I disagree with Schirke’s relationship with Guts being a “lolicon” thing. She’s just a girl. Falling in love with older people is a rite of passing as old as history. She helping Guts and the party is her roll and there’s no sexual connotation about it. She’ll grow up follow her path and look for happiness, and that’ll be it (if she and the party survives, that is). There’s no hidden implication that she’ll end up with Guts, specially not as child. And her dynamic with Guts is pretty similar to a daughter helping her father. It’s really endearing how a guy like him ended up with a family like the one he’s got by mere chance. Isidro is a good kid at heart and that alone make him a good addition to Guts’s life. Yeah he’s been relegated to comic relief, but that isn’t a reason to hate him, just the circumstances of the series slow releases and whatever. Honestly people hate him for shit that isn’t even worth hating a character.

I dunno about you but ive always respected the shit out of Isidro and admired him for the things most people hate him for. I think the fact that after all the shit hes seen and gone through he can still not only be a kind person but still so much as smile is goddamn impressive. People always say Isidro's had it too easy, completely ignoring the fact that this kid at ~11 years old has been surviving in berserk's world by himself. Hes been going to sleep everyday not knowing if hell wake up the next morning freezing, and starving, witnessing atrocities no human should ever be forced to witness on an hourly basis, going days without food and drink, being called anything and everything by full grown men trying to constantly kill him and on top of all that, its implied that Isidro grew up in a pretty abusive home. Out of the entire cast I'd argue that hes probably had the roughest childhood behind Guts, even including Casca and Serpico (Though Isma is a close contender) He has every right to be a cynical jaded nihilist exploiting and manipulating desperate people like him to score some food or what have you, but instead hes one of the kindest characters in the manga. He fights off an entire cult singlehandedly to save Nina and Casca, followed Guts into the tower of conviction to get them back, dove from what looks like a 12 storey wall into flames to get casca out, fought a horde of trolls and crew of slavers to help Schierke, distracted a Makara to save Guts, led the elfhelm evacutation and never expected, or got, a single bit of recognition for any of it, by the characters or us. The fact that this guy still does his best, has any bit of optimism and goofiness isn't a flaw, its a display of resilience. The only two people who have ever treated Isidro like a human being and not an animal pet following them around were kind of Puck and later Isma, and now Ismas gone. Dude might be at a bit of a breaking point and I dont think anyone in the party at the moment is gonna help him, so he's either gonna fall down a few steps to his goals, or have to step up for the sake of everyone

I’ve never really read Beserk but I know it by reputation. I’m also always up for a video on the importance of side characters on a story seemingly about one persons singular journey. (When written well) They can provide a lot of perspective, levity, and pathos. Sure there will be those who find characters like these lame. But like you mention in the video there would something lost without characters like a Robin, a Jimmy Olsen, or an Isidro and Schierke.

You definitely should! Its a long read, and due to the inclusion of very dark themes like torture and r*pe it might not be for everyone. But the writing is incredible and so is the art. If you have time, give it a go!

You could also always start off by watching the 1997 anime, its a good segway.

Guts truly mirrors Griffith in a ton of ways. And one of the main ways is in relationships. And in that regard the order of type of feelings is even reversed. Griffith's relationships started out more as a love/admiration, became infatuation, and then became lust and violence. With guts it is the opposite. His relationships start with violence and lust, become infatuation, and then become pure love and admiration. His group is a traditional family surrogate. And are less of a found family compared to the band of the hawk. Because of the stage in life Guts is at. Guts both needs and wants that security, trust, and love of a family. And both of these characters represent different aspects of guts. As well as helping him become who he wants to be. By learning and becoming their father figure.
