I’ve never expected a painter to repair all my woodwork unless it was spelled out in a contract and the requirements of such were clear. Replacing siding and trim? No way, that should be taken care of before I even talk to a painter. But that’s just me…

My father was a house painter and I worked with him during high school and college so summers and holidays over the course of 7 years. I am far from an expert but I have a lot of experience and can tell you your guy did a crap job. It looks like he didn't prime the boards and if little bits are pealing now, they will ALL be pealing in a year or two- Although it is possible that they were primed but had dirt/residue on them prior to painting OR he used really poor quality paint. Possibly all three. The lippage on your chimney would have been an easy fix before he painted- five minutes to shave it down flush. The molding around your windows where there was rot should not have been filled with caulk- he should have either been replaced with new molding OR if it wasn't terrible (looks like it wasn't) then he should have removed the rotted parts and filled it in with Bondo and then sanded it down. Easy, cheap, permanent fix that looks good as new with very little work. The overspray on your windows happens in all paint jobs BUT the last thing you do on a house when you finish painting is clean up and part of the clean up is cleaning all the windows and removing all the overspray. The paint on your hoses- he should have been using his own hose. The dumping paint out on your grass- he should have dumped it in an inconspicuous area in pine straw or something. He is not a good painter. At all. I can also guarantee that he made mistakes that you have not noticed- look for overspray on your roof shingles and around your chimney. Check and make sure that all your windows will open as a poor painter will paint them shut and won't paint under the sill.

Sounds like your father did a good job and took his time, because you seem very knowledgeable as well. I wish I weren’t so inexperienced with all of these processes but I am. I’m learning but sadly everything taking place in my house right now- I guess most of it can’t be undone. I don’t know. But when you said certain things like, they should be using their own supplies… omg the people at my house keep approaching me and asking me ( and sometimes not asking me ), to use so many things, from my broom, my microwave, a brand new ladder I just bought, my water hose ( which also has paint all over it ), and other things too- I was so confused. At first I was like is this normal? Then I started getting these feelings like, this can’t be normal. It feels weird. And since I don’t feel comfortable leaving these people in my home with me not here, I feel weird when I am here too. Lol. I just wish it were all done with. I’m so sorry for the rant. I just have really needed someone, somewhere to talk to about all these things, big and small. Wish I had known so much more before I got into this.

This guy might as well have said "I hired a mechanic to fix the AC in my car, and my tooth still hurts". The house is painted. That's what painters do - they paint. They don't replace siding and trims. It was nice of the painter to replace anything at all. Hire a builder to replace your siding and trims.

I can see where your coming from. I been painting here in cali for 22 yrs served a 3 yr apprentice . 54 yrs old and only worked for 3 contractors . i have painted a lot of residential and commercial. And i agree not the best job but not the worst. Prep prep prep. Is number 1. Communication 2, dont hire friends and family. 3. Find someone who loves what they do. They do better work. Dont hire a mechanic to install trim. A carpenter should have replaced what was needed then have a painter do his thing.

We hired him 6 months later to paint a bedroom. Now I’ve used him for my customers when they need interior work. I’ve given him over 150 jobs. Gotta find a guy and stick with him for good work

I am in the process of painting my 1942 Cottage. It has lead paint according to the test plug. I am using a Speed Heater and scraping down to bare wood. The wood is old growth tongue and groove and despite the termite damage it's in good shape. My point is, painting is all about prep work and that prep work can be very challenging. No one cares about your home or your money the way that you do. If you find a good painter, figure our a way to adopt him. (g)

Great vlog Bob. I’m surprised those smooth tires are still going. Regarding the carpenter, I had a similar experience. I believe they give their “friends” lesser quality work because they think we won’t mind as much, in the same way we overlook our own home projects.

I'm not a painter but it looks like he didn't prime before he painted, a lot of times painters will use caulk to fill holes and then paint over them. It's unfortunate that he didn't do what you wanted but you have to tell contractors exactly what you want, you can't expect them to know what you want. It sounds like he was more of a handyman, which I don't have any problems with handymen, I use to be one, but it sounds like he needs to stick to one task he's good at and have subs do the other tasks.

Hi Bob, my experience with paint like that is caused by moisture coming through the wall. I would bet that where those spots are outside, inside could be a hole from a finishing nail holding up a picture inside. There are holes in the vapour barrier inside

the boards that are peeling need stripping with heat gun possibly to much moisture in the timber or trapped behind the paint as a decorator thats what i would have done if i was being paid the market price for holes cracks etc he should have used linseed putty one thats compatible with water based paints or 2 park filler or the up market resin based fillers. but to be fair thats a lot to take on for one person so wonder theres lots of snagging to do

When I quote to do walls and texture, i always make sure the customer knows what the result will be. It takes much more time to get better results and if they are not willing to pay more money, then they get the sub par work. With proper drywall and texture, especiallt matching/repairs, the more time spent yields a better finished product.

Been a painter my whole life. Cars boats homes residential commercial and also now powder coating. Just because someone can pick up the tools of a trade and use them doesn’t make them a master of that trade. Don’t hire a truck driver to fly your plane. Painting is a trade with many many aspects that most people do not know or understand. Painting is perceived as something anyone can do and that is so untrue.

This is one area that I am actually able to comment on Mr. StarrTile.... That Lipage/Trimwork/Hardy-Paint is absolutely unacceptable and there is to many people that get away with jobs like this... I cant comprehend how you Install Brand New Trim/Hardy/Anything and Have Lipage/Paint Peeling/Etc!... The Hardy should have been painted In a Garage or shope at a certain Temperature (Normally 50-70 Farenheight).. The Hardy should have been Primed.. Allowed time to dry, Then finished...Then Installed after proper curing time..... He should have his own Hose. All of those issues! I have to say that 90% of so called "Painters" out there do not have q clue... Your Holes should have been Filled with a Bondo/Cement Material... I can keep going... But, I think you understand... I watch your videos for Tile instructions and I thank you for everything... The things you are pointing out are absolutely within reason... And Overstreet is absolutely Unacceptable!! WOW!!

I did work for a property mgt company in a condo association . A homeowner had asked for a bid to paint the interior of his home . It was a cathedral ceiling , i had given him a bid and hadnt heard from him . Was out of the property thru the winter months . Came back in spring and he came and told me that he wished he had used me . The painter had dropped a nearly full gallon of RED paint on his white leather couch and his real hardwood floor damaging the wood and finish .

Really a shame because hardi board is really a good product . But like everything elseb it all starts with the prepwork . Peeling paint , chances are a dirty surface or no primer . I wish i could find clients like you who have no problem paying as long as its done correctly . Lots of times they will want to cut corners , cheap materials etc . Im very thorough in spelling out scope of work , materials , pay schedules and change orders . On a whole I have had very few problems . But there is the occasional house that is just frickin cursed . I always stay honest , and do the best i can even if it takes longer and costs more money .

Jumping worms grow twice as fast, reproduce more quickly, and can infest soils at high densities. In areas of heavy infestation, native plants, soil invertebrates, salamanders, birds, and other animals may decline. These invasive worms can severely damage the roots of plants in nurseries, gardens, forests, and turf.

This sounds like a communication issue. The exact number and location of boards being replaced should’ve been highlighted in the contract, not just guessed upon only to have you upset. I’m sorry this happened to you but you guys should’ve been more clear with each other on exactly what was to be done. If it were really that bad, I would’ve replaced all of the siding because in a few years they’re just going to rot again and you’re going to have the same issue.

I feel for ya. Shitty job for sure. Vast majority of paint not sticking is due to dirt. Bad prep. Moisture. Even bad paint. Or zero prime By the looks of it he didn’t care to do good prep or anything else. And painted. All leading edges need done if not the siding Rots like yours did. And keep any landscaping etc away from bottom boards. That’s a BIG NO NO. It’s like T1-11 I see guys hang it and paint it. Myself. I’ll spray the edges while there stacked up. Any bare wood the can get water needs painted or treated. I see guys doing fence post. They cut it then put cut end in ground. PT wood when cut you can see the center has was less chemicals. So you treat the ends. In short it’s like tile. Good prep makes the difference. I see guys run tile up 8ft. They grout everything but not the very top because they say no one will see it. But we know water. Moisture will get behind tile like that. Any good paint job on a house is 1 week plus. Prep. Patch. Sand. Prime. Dry. It’s a endless list honestly. The brick mold should of been fixed with epoxy. Lifetime patch. But your in the trade. It’s like lipped tile or gaps on metal. Off center drains. Etc Myself I always tell customers hey by the way there’s more damage then you figured or while I’m here we can do this also. You figure it’s a friend and they won’t screw ya. And you know them. Not saying all friends are bad. But there are those who push your buttons. Even more so if he’s done great work other places but dropped the ball on yours

I install and sand hardwood floors for a living but started out for 5 years painting, which I got tired of the prep work and people always asking me to match their lowest estimate. I can’t add anything to the job that hasn’t been said. I’ll do my house in the next 2 years because I plan on selling it in 4 years and I only want to paint it once. I’ll remove the particle board siding on 2 sides and hire a painter to do the high areas that I no longer want to attempt at age 70. Concerning using friends to work for you, I’ve had mixed results. My neighbor works at a honda dealership as a mechanic and works on my 3 Hondas He charges about a third of what the dealership charges. He does the work on weekends and it may take 3-4 weeks before he can get to it and it may take 2 weekends to finish but he does good work and I have plenty of cars to drive, so time isn’t a factor. However, even I have my limits. I hired someone on Craigslist (yes, I know, very bad idea) to do body work on my cargo van and my Odyssey. In both cases, it took him 2-3 months to do it but that was alright. Next, I buy a Civic that had been t boned in the driver’s door (also bad idea in hindsight but it worked fine on my Odyssey that had been in a front end wreck). I pick up all the parts that he requested; new door and the whole frame on that side from the hood to the trunk cut out. He had it for 6 years before I gave up and took it somewhere else to finish. We had become friends and went out to bars a few times. Little did I know that his new girlfriend was an addict and he was a former addict. Needless to say, I haven’t totally trusted a worker on my house or cars since. Not even the Honda mechanic.

Painting cabinet faces in the garage is one of the best ways to keep anything from falling or landing on them(bugs/leaves,childrens and adults fingerprints from touching them too early). He should’ve put plastic up before spraying them though, and not dusting up your belongings. But spraying cabinets is about 1000 times faster than rolling or a brush, and it should turn out damn near perfect. So That’s most likely why he did that. Unfortunately this guys business motto is now “he should’ve”haha.

There are a few reasons your paint was peeling . It could be that he applied latex paint over oil based paint. If you sand the area in question and the paint powders it's oil based. If you sand latex it will roll up in clumps. The other reason would be contamination with oil or silicone . I never use silicone caulking before painting and only in the kitchen and bathroom after the painting is complete..Another reason would be a bad pressure washing job which left dirt and dust on the siding. I also noticed he didn't prime and paint the bottom lip on the hardy board which will continue to swell as moisture sinks in especially in the ones closest to the ground as the rain bounces up of the ground . Sorry about your crappy paint job but if you can you should take care of the issues before it gets worse.

Hi Bob! Your neighbor, contractor, “ex-friend/associate” is a horrible painter or should we say handyman in general. Not to preach, but this is why you should never higher a friend, neighbor or someone you know, to do a job. This guy either does shitty work in general or just decided to do shitty work for you. There’s no way anyone would refer him based on the quality of work performed for you and small businesses rely on word of mouth for the majority of their business. His I don’t give a damn attitude shines through in the work he does. There is the distinct possibility that he never liked you. That could be why his I don’t care, quality of work performed, shined through so succinctly or he just does good work for himself. It would be interesting to see the result of other jobs he’s performed outside of doing work for himself. This is hindsight, but you really shouldn’t have paid him until he cleaned up his messes and did the work to even an average standard of quality. Wow! What the hell was that? He owes you new sod in that area he poured paint into. I’m sure that’s an E.P.A. violation to dump paint residue in this manner. To use your nice hose for his professional use is complete BS, then to not clean the paint residue off is a complete I don’t give a damn attitude or he’s just an f’n simpleton, with a total disregard for other people’s stuff. I didn’t see one job he did that was even close to being quality work. At the very least you need to go on social media to write a detailed review, in order to expose this guy, e.g. Yelp, FaceBook, etc.

They came out, scraped and repainted, now 3 months after they "fixed" it...its bubbling again. Even my stucco has bubbles in the paint. I'm not the type of guy that had to be there with my hands on my hip hovering over workers...but I should have been. The question for you and anyone else chiming in o on this blatant disrespect is...what can we do about it? The painting company is already paid. Hire another company to inspect and write the deficiencies up then lawsuit? I dont believe a negative BBB report will get your money refunded. I have a 3 year warranty...they are coming out again...but if their "repair" doesnt last I prefer them pressure clean everything off and start fresh...which was verified by another comment. People just dont care anymore. Par for the course I'm afraid along with just about every other thing that's going bad...customer service with attitude, drivers, people being disrespectful in grocery stores and on and on and on. I'm sorry this is happening to both of us my friend. There is no more pride in workmanship. There is never enough time and effort to do it right...bit there is time to do it over. I just dont get it.

The topcoat (no primer) has nothing to adhere too. He's not a painter. Most of your windows needed to be trimmed out. Put Mineral Spirits on your hose and it will come right off. You keep saying that you could have done it, I'm going to make the comment that you cannot. Hire professionals instead of trying to do it yourself or hire someone who claims to be a professional that isn't. You need to drop it. He's your neighbor. Your more upset that you lost his friendship. Why would you keep allowing him to do additional work if you noticed all these errors? Your not an expert in painting so you can't critique like you are.

id say that the guy did was he was paint to do, put paint on the house, all that extra stuff should have been vocally adressed taht he wanted fixed....at least now if he really could do it himself its only those few things he has to work on

I don't know anything about anything but even i can see why you're so upset! How could he do that to a neighbor and a friend? I'd want to give someone i have a relationship with the very best results because they're my people, you know? I'm frustrated for you... i can't believe he didn't do everything in his power to make things right. The over spraying, paint residue on the hose, nail removal/ patching on the garage trim, etc are easy to remedy; he couldn't make the effort to rectify those kinds of errors, at least? What a shame... You gave him work and that's the thanks you get? Smh... Not only did you get unsatisfactory service but you lost a friend. I feel for you! 😡😮‍💨

Thank you for the comment, I appreciate all the kind words, and I would say I agree with you 100% that he should have done a much better job for somebody he knows, but then again the house is for sale and I guess he just didn't feel like he needed to go the extra steps. Eventually it sold anyway without any of those issues coming up, thankfully. But as a contractor myself doing tile work I always make my customer happy even if it cost me money because at the end of the day all you have is your name and reputation. The fact that I lost a friend out of it it's not really a big deal because friends don't treat friends like that so he never really was to begin with, that's just the way I see it..... But thank you 😊 👍🏻

He did a bad job but your also expecting way to much on used home , not everything is going to perfect as new , and i honestly wouldnt care to fix your nail testing holes or want to work with someone like you , just like home owners do backgrounds checks on contractors , so do contractors and i would refuse your money and decline your business

So to your point about a used home, 99% of the houses out there will be used but it is no excuse to do if his poor job on the obvious, and these were all obvious mistakes that I would make as a novice painter. I build showers everyday of my life for the last 22 years and my customers have an expectation of somewhat perfection even though their shower is also a used shower, I make it better than I found it and arguably he did not make my house better than he found it. Subpar work when I didn't decide the price, he told me his worth and I paid. I have a price for my talent and my customers are happy to pay me because they are aware of my work and I don't have complaints, nor do I have my work outed on the internet. And no I do not expect perfect which is probably why I would not hire you, but if you KNOW you could do better but don't because the house is being sold, it says more about your work ethics and character than my expected outcome.
