This just shows that some people are, by very nature, good and kind hearted. Even at a time where systemic racism and oppressions of the highest levels was normalised to the extent that people didn't see anything wrong in it, there were people like him who did not allow themselves to be swallowed by what was 'normal' and recognized evil for what it was even back then amidst the general acceptance of such cruel acts of injustice and hate. Do you believe that white people arent capable of the same change or growth? 100 years ago Black men were strung up in the trees for the smallest of slights and many times no slight at all, and you believe that is honestly comparable to how Black men are treated to day? Racism levels today in America are lower than they have ever been and that a fact. You say it as if my grandfather was a racist then I am by default also racist and therefor my country is too. Actually, Vivien Leigh and Leslie Howard were both British and completely appalled at the blatant racism in America. They came here for the movie and never really saw much until Clark Gable pointed it out. They simply assumed the black actors would be welcome to the premiere. When Hattie McDaniel died, Vivien Leigh wrote a sweet letter to her family (she was back in England by then), and so did Olivia De Havilland. Both were consummate professionals and known for their impeccable manners.

Hattie McDaniel imo was one of the main characters..this movie is my favourite since I first seen it as a nine year old child with my grandmother about 30 years ago. She gushed over Clark, I gushed over Scarlet, but I never forgot mammy..and her red petticoat..and her amazing scene with Melanie when bonnie died. Im sorry to you Hattie McDaniel that you weren't celebrated the way you should have been, but in 2020 I remember you with such fondness as a 39 year old white irish woman. 💟💟

Nobody alive today is responsible for the racism of that period. No it should not have been that way. I myself wish it hadn't, but Hattie winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress paved the way for people of all colors to be recognized for their talent, thus eventually leading to the abolition of segregation in the early 1970s. Racism isn't as rampant now as it was then. Many alive today didn't suffer the injustices that people like Hattie faced. Hattie McDaniel said that she would rather make $17,000.00 a week or more as an Actress in Hollywood than other work she could do which would pay much less. She lived in a beautiful Home in Los Angeles and enjoyed her life without the cares of want for the rest of her life. Love to quote her , she said “we could give ourselves heirs, get all dressed up like racehorses but we’re just mules in horse harness and we weren’t foolin anybody “! But you know, I believe some families truly did love their (slaves) and if you watch the movie Scarlett really did, even though maybe they didn’t realize how wrong it was because that’s all they ever knew. Especially the kids that were pretty much raised by them. I wish I could go back now and change that mistake but I can’t. I hope people realize that with the Oscars even in 1939 the Awards were chosen by counting the number of votes cast by fellow actors and actresses, and other members of the Oscar Guild. Though Hattie may NOT have been allowed to sit at the same table as the White cast of GWTD who were nominated she was definitely invited to be there by Sales. That was back then a huge sign of respect for her by Sales. I disagree with the word horrific in the title of this video. Yes it was shameful in the fact that she wasn't allowed to enter the front door or sit with the White cast members. BUT as I reminded people, the MAJORITY of ALL THOSE actors and actresses, WHITE or NOT colored, VOTED FOR Hattie to receive the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. It's also VERY PLAIN to see in that OLD FILM CLIP after Hattie's name was announced as the winner of that Oscar how TRULY HAPPY that AUDIENCE was for her to have won by the GENUINE SMILES on their faces plus how very hard they were applauding for her. As far as I was taught, those above voting actions by the majority of that audience, and then how they reacted later after she had won the Oscar IS NOT really horrific. Shameful yes. But NOT horrific.
